Quote from SamH :I'm sad because the more I watch and enjoy the sport, the more I also learn about the sport's internal politics.. and so I find myself witnessing something that seems irresistibly drawn to tear itself apart from within, and it's sad. It's like a thing of beauty from afar.. but get close and you can smell that it's just a rotting corpse. It's sad.

Yeah I definitely see what you mean. I've been watching since Melbourne 1996 and this deterioration is saddening.

On the other hand, at least the races themselves are pretty good. The 2007 championship was fantasic despite all the politics surrounding it. Once the lights go out, all that stuff seems to fall away and it's about racing.

This Mclaren aplology is pretty worrying though. I wouldn't be surprised if the FIA barred them from competition this year. Now that would throw a wrench in the works as far as which drivers will be at which team. Hamilton is good enough to push someone else out of a seat despite contracts. The question is, where would he go?

Interesting thread - I was wondering the same thing myself. I got my S2 license in July 2006. I think the first version I played may have been Q. Was there a patch P?

The LX4/LX6 were definitely in the game though; the Formula BMW is the first new car I've gotten since starting LFS.

I find it really odd that this has started happening just within the last couple of days, when it seems like everything is working ok.

Dust.

Don't take it to a shop yet. Basic PC repair is very very simple and you can avoid spending money.

Open it up and blow all the dust out with canned air. Take off the heatsink fan and get all the dust out of the heatsink fins. I had the exact same thing happen to me several months ago. Turns out there was a solid layer of dust caked over my CPU heatsink, so the fan wasn't really blowing on the fins at all. My temp dropped 15C just from getting the dust out.

That's your graphics card temp.

That is too hot. Shut down your PC now and don't restart it until the problem is fixed.

Quote from karter24 :I just tried running a race in rFactor, and I'm getting the same issue. Very odd considering I wasn't having this problem just a few days ago. I'll try downloading Speedfan, and I'll check the temps.

Maybe a fan stopped spinning, or a lump of dust is lodged on a heatsink somewhere.

I would avoid running games until you know for sure that it isn't a heat issue. Find out ASAP, as heat can easily destroy your system.

Does this happen in any other games?

If so that points strongly towards heat. Get Speedfan to check your temps.

Quote from JTbo :Well look out from window, do you see whole yard ? Monitor is your window.

I'm sure you can understand point behind it, if you just let yourself to understand.

It is true that using such low FOV would be stupid, it would be impossible to drive with it, but then you would see game world 1:1 without making objects smaller than they are

I'm using 80 nowdays, used to be 95 but have learned slowly to lower, makes it easier to hit apex, but bit harder to know what is around you. Compromises, how I hate those

Aha! I just misunderstood exactly what you were trying to say. I (and evidently others) thought you were trying to say that setting the FOV to 20 is the only sensible way to play.

What you're saying makes sense now, and I fully agree. I'll probably lower my FOV from 100 because I don't really drive the F1 car anyway.

Thank you for being civil and reasonable.

EDIT:
Quote from STROBE :Yes, it's quite understandable.

Just completely irrelevant to the concept of representing a driver's point of view on a monitor.

This too. I fully understand that what we see on the monitor is just a representation, and not true-to-life. But until we all have 360-degree displays, we'll have to accept these limitations.

On a somewhat related topic, I disagree that a speedometer is totally useless on a racetrack. Pre-patch Y I used it regularly to get my shift timing exactly right. For example, my FOX / AS Club setup redlighted for 6th gear at 204kph. When the time to shift was close, I'd put my hand on the shifter in anticipation. Crossing through 203 kph, I'd pull the knob to shift, just before the red light. This resulted in a better shift and thus more speed than waiting until the red light is on to initiate a shift. Now I'm not saying that anything in patch-Y should be changed, or that I have less fun because of this. I like the change simply because it's another variable. But for the record, I did use the speedo while racing and it helped me be faster.

Quote from JTbo :You have missed whole idea, your IRL FOV is something near 180 degrees and spread your arms, now how wide is your 'display' to IRL world? It is very same near 180 degrees, now take both arms and put them sides of your monitor, is this how much less than what you really see? It happens to be that 20 degrees or perhaps bit less

This makes NO SENSE AT ALL.

Quote from Riders Motion :Call me a stupid, but ain't field of view limited to 30 degree in LFS anyway? How do you use 20... And yeh I am using 90 degree FOV (Which seems the most realistic to me) and I can still see the digits fine, because they are indicated on a speed gauge next to my screen

30 is the minimum; I just tried it.

I'm using 100 right now because that is the lowest number which still allows me to see all of my mirrors in the F1 car.

Quote from JTbo :No it is realistic

By that logic, whenever one crashes, one should smash one's self in the head with a hammer. Realistic, right?

Quote from JTbo :would you like to see road or speedo?

The road, of course. I must be clear I'm not complaining about not being able to see the dashboard. I don't really care what it says. Patch Y is better in every way. But your arguments are totally illogical and downright condescending.

Quote from JTbo :
We see far more in our monitors that what we see IRL without moving head or changing where we look

Really? Here's what I see in the FBMW with FOV set at 100. Please show which parts of that image would be outside my field of vision if I were actually sitting in a real FBMW.

Quote from JTbo :
BTW, with projector setup you can easily read your speed

So what? Projector setups are the extreme minority and thus have no significance in this discussion.

Quote from JTbo :FOV that everyone uses is more than sector monitor covers, so more image is squeezed into monitor area making things smaller than they should be, this is why numbers in analog speedo looks so small.

When using FOV angle which monitor covers from your vision area, you see numbers in correct size.

Again, this makes no sense. This sim is limited by hardware specs such as monitor size. If we were to actually put the FOV at 20 degrees, we can see the dashboard, but then we can't see anything else. Reasonable compromises have to be made in order to mitigate the limitations brought about by current hardware.

20-degree FOV is not reasonable. It's just plain silly.

Put your FOV to 20 degrees, then you can see speedo, that is more than you should use anyway when playing with monitor.

This makes no sense. Please to explain.

2. Yes, they all have the same handling characteristics

LOL. Have you actually even driven the cars? To say the FBM is like the FOX is pure folly. Even without FFB the handling differences are bleeding obvious.

I love how they put the decals on the car in such a way (Penisten's or something like that), in just the right place so that when the door was opened, it just said PENIS.

The other side of the car was similar, but I can't remember what it said.

Quote from Speed Soro :There are too many formulas in LFS right now and I don't see it is good for the consistence of the servers and the community.

That is your opinion, not anything which can be substantiated with data. And the popularity of FOX/FBM servers proves that such an opinion is clearly the minority.

I'm running with Athlon 64 3200+, 1GB ram, X850XT gfx card, no AA no AF, 1280x1024 native resolution of 19" tft.

That doesn't make any sense.

I have a similar system (P4 3.2GHz, 1GB RAM, X800XL running as 1280x1024) and I run 4xAA / 8xAF with good FPS.

For those of you who already have X30 installed, what's Chicane Route like? What sort of laptimes can you do, in the FBM in particular?

Could someone please post a screenshot of the layout map? I'm having trouble visualizing exactly which parts of the other South City layouts it uses. Am I correct in assuming that it uses only existing South City areas and that there are no new sections?

In your opinion, is it better in Standard or Reversed?

Also screenshots of any updated textures, new buildings, new armco, new kerbs, anything else that is new would be greatly apprecated.

Also if someone could please post a shot of the map of South City Chicane Route, that would be great.
