It looks like a fun laptop as long as it is not your only pc. I think i'll buy one of those. They're good for console stuff, internet (although the resolution isn't enough for most websites), e-mail and it's a perfect e-book reader. You should have an other computer if you do more then those tasks (like playing LFS)

Most small laptops cost more. Only some 15,4" laptops are cheap, but that's indeed big for a portable device. I have seen Chineese 12" laptops (WXGA so much higher resolution) for a little more then 500 euro's with coreduo. If the quality of those laptops isnt't too bad I forget about eee. You should be able to play LFS on those.

Quote from bluejudas :I totally agree with you that the tracks in LFS are not boring, but other maybe think so ??. But I think that not having RL tracks keeps some people away from LFS. We all know that track modding is not coming anytime soon, but as long as its not possible to mod people will complain

They can't be boring. All tracks are completely different. If you drive WR's on every track you can say you're bored, if you don't you don't get everything out of the track. I'm far from bored

Quote from count.bazley :Yep they've been through plenty of shades of red, especially in the last 10 years. The only other team I can think of keeping the same colour throughout would be that Renault's F1 cars have always had a lot of yellow on them.

They've changed it from Ferari-red in Marlborro-red. But that was a long time ago

Quote from Vykos69 :hey guys, who of you lot plays poker online? Or with buddies? And if you play online, on which platform?

Online and with buddies. It will be over I think next year with our new government rules (you can't beat 40,85 % taxes on each win).

Quote from dez-2k7 :Hi guys, so basically, i was looking for upgrades for my computer as a christmas present, yeah i know its early but i might be able to get them early

I put a post on thecomputerforums.co.uk but they dont seem to reply.

Here is my current specs;
#Running System - Windows XP Home Edition 2002 Service Pack 2
#Motherboard - Intel 82801FB Ultra ATA Storage - 2651
#Graphics Card - NVIDIA GeForce 6200 LE 128MB
#CPU/Processor - Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.06GHz
#RAM - 1024MB

I was thinking of;
#NVIDIA 8600GT or 8800GT
#3MB RAM
#Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Energy Efficient 95W edition Socket 775 (2.40GHz) G0 Stepping L2 8MB Cache OEM Processor

So basically im just wondering whether i should scrap my current PC and buy a new one or upgrade the one ive got now, and if so, what upgrades?

My budget for a new GFX Card, CPU and RAM is £400.

Feel free to ask any more questions and ill try my hardest to answer them.

Thanks in advance..

You need a new motherboard as wel. And then you've almost replaced your complete pc. If you can sell your current one i should just go for a new one (only thing you can use from your current pc is harddrives (if you use sata) and your cd/dvd player/burner and maybe the case (you probably need a new power supply too )

Quote from tristancliffe :The only change is the hotlap records get removed. The MRT will still be there. The LX6 will still be there. The BF1 will still be there.

With rF2, 99% of the cars in the game won't be there, and would have to be made again, probably from scratch (apart from 3D models, but even then they might need a lot of work with a new engine).

LFS doesn't have magical powers, but the lack of modding means we don't lose out with new versions, it's only a gain.

Since you started taking rFactor and rFactormods in the discussion. A new LFS version does mean stuff will be missed. CTRA needed an update for patch X, Ghostcar , slickmod, smokemod and LFSTweak are incompatable with Patch X. It's not only the hotlaps.

They promised to make it more realistic. Maybe it is compared to Carbon i don't know. I can't even play it on my pc, so i can stay in my closet playing LFS

From what i've heared it's not very realistic. Cars with 400 HP still slow down when you take a corner. It looks nice, maybe i'll buy an Xbox someday and then arcaderacers can be fun.

Quote from Racer Y :You know, I've been thinking, What will happen post S-3? Like to the master server and to LFS world? like i dunno about two or three years after the final s-3 patch. What happens then?

Why do you worry about that? Then there will come something new. Maybe S4 with the same masterserver, or maybe everyone will be playing Need for Speed Carton.

Quote from di48lo :I have so many things on my PC... it would take almost 2 dayst to get over it...

You said "reinstall the game", not your entire computer

Or just install an other version in an other directory. A lot of people have multiple installs to be able to use other apps (slickmod, smokemod, ghostcar and so on) and to test stuff.

You did not use any crack? Cracks can do strange things and make games look bugged. (i don't expect an other answer then no, but if it is yes you could save us some time thinking about what it could be).

Quote from Tweaker :lol what???? Smarties are everywhere here, and made in NJ. I don't buy the little kids pack ones too... I get MEGA Smarties

M&Ms are so-so... I'd really only like to have Peanut Butter M&Ms or Reeses Pieces.

M&M's and smarty's are everywhere. Here in the Netherlands there widely available too. With smarties the capsule is too sweet (kidsstuff), M&M's FTW

I did try early S1 versions but i did not play it enough to miss the old blackwood i guess. I played it a few times and a few years later (the S2 U or V patch ) i rediscovered LFS and bought S2

Quote from jimaxx :Ok im currently running a middle spec system (in my opinion)
6200gefoce graphix
1.2gb of ram
and my crappy xp2000+ procceser

Now on some games on LOW graphics (thinking of mainly css here) i can run down to about 15fps :| im guessing this is down to a 1.7ghz procceser...would it be possible for me to overclock this to get an improvement? and how noticable would it be?

Cheers,

Edit: from first post,
Im running the standard cooling system which came with this pc...which im guessing isnt good... if that helps at all,
Edit2: Cheers Jak for that, ill have a look and see what i get

I don't think you can overclock it much. For me it is the bottleneck as well (XP 2000+, 756 MB ram andd an Radeon 9500@9700 pro).

Problem with this CPU it's already very warm (hot) at stock speeds. Last summer I had to underclock it to be able to use my pc. I've got a better cooler now, but it still doesn't overclock. For a 300/400 euro's you have a now PC with decent specs (amd X2 dualcore, 2gb ram and a videocart)

My pc does handle it well BTW. Decent framerates, but very low details with 30+ people on a track

Quote from GruntOfAction :Hey im running a Compaq Presario (Everything about it is unchanged from the factory except for the video card which is a geforceFX5200) and I was wondering what is the easiest way to set it up for LFS without buying a new computer or without killing my own? It runs fine at 40-60 FPS but it looks..ehh..What settings do you reccomend for a computer like mine?

I think you have to give more details of your pc (processor and memmory are important).

But i think most stuff from the startpost will work. It does on my 6/7(!) year old computer. Only when there are a lot of cars on the track it doesn't look that good anymore (all the details are gone, but it doesn't lag).

Quote from z3r0c00l :the old panda was much more fun.

A panda would be nice competition for the UF1.

A SUV? Sure, why not. A Mercedes ML63 AMG and Porsche Cayenne Turbo S could be fun
Quote from fraghetti :-1 for SUV's. Those stupid things are just prestige objects nobody needs. I'd rather like to see some real jeeps and some nice rallycross tracks with some slower parts. (like some bigger stones)

I like that thought. Rally tracks where you ruine your car if you don't slow down. But there will always be aliens that can blow trough big stones full throttle.

Longest time for me is about 50 hours. I woke up on Thursday's at 07.00 am and went to sleep at Saturday's at 09.00 am every week for a few years because i worked Thursday and Friday nights and had to go to school during the daytime. It got me a head age every Saturday (like you have when you had to much to drink the other day)

Quote from dieselfuelonly :Hi everyone. Thought that those of us that are hosting servers could share what hardware we use.

This is going to be my new server soon... I plan to my my S2 license soon too to make it worthwhile. This server will be shipped out to Chicago to be colocated in the next couple months.

Here is the current hardware:
  • HP Proliant ML570 G2 (130lb. 7u Rack-mount Case)
  • 4x2.0GHz Xeon MP Processors (4 individual hyperthreaded processors)
  • 8x512MB PC1600 DDR ECC RAM (Total of 4GB)
  • 2x15k RPM 36GB Ultra320 SCSI HDs - RAID 1 (Main OS)
  • 2x10k RPM 73GB Ultra320 SCSI HDs - Not in use ATM
  • HP Smart Array 6402 Ultra320 PCI-X SCSI RAID Controller
  • CentOS Linux 5.0 - Operating System
Here are the planned upgrades:
  • Addition of 2x10k RPM 73GB Ultra320 SCSI HDs - Set up in RAID 0+1 along with the other 2 current 73GB drives
  • *Possible* Addition of another Memory Board allowing for 8 more sticks of PC1600 DDR ECC RAM
  • Dual Gigabit NIC
Anyway, can someone give me an idea of how many LFS servers this would support?

Thanks, and share your servers too!

Dennis

(I'll post pics in a second, I have to take a couple )

You don't need that for a dedicated LFS server

I run it on a 533 Mhz VIA C3, with 2 GB compact flash (storage) and 256 MB ram (memmory). That's all and the connection is the bottleneck (1 mbit up)

Quote from Woz :The passenger code has beeen there forever so it has not really cost anything on dev recently (At least in the past 3+ years).

It was probably added early on as handycap and also for testing the cars reaction etc.

There is no harm it being left in from what I can see.

And it was kind of allready there because they made a function you can sit on the left or on the right. Not to much work to make you sit on both sides and in the back to then.
