Effot? Expense? All you need to do is find another car either online or IRL that is identical to yours, and get plates made up. You can go to any motor factor and get them to make up "show plates" with the correct UK font.
However, I do agree that cloning a car is a lot harder than just jumping in an uninsured car and driving off, not to mention the fact that if caught, you can go to prison for fraud instead of just getting a fine, 6 points and getting your car impounded.
All in all though, this is still a very good idea and I welcome it with open arms. While I am by no means a saint and regularly break some sort of motoring law on a daily basis, one thing I cannot stand is people who drive uninsured cars, whether it be via pure ignorance (i.e, not buying it in the first place!) or by driving cars with undeclared modifications. They are absolute scum in my eyes, and I just hope that come the time that they have an inevitable crash, they hurt no-one else but themselves.
If anything, you will see a rise in cloned cars, not foreign ones.
However, despite this not stopping uninsured cars being on the road completely, it's still a fantastic idea and quite possibly the first motoring idea from the government that I have strongly agreed with in a long time!
It's pretty disturbing that this moron thinks that child porn is a hilarious thing to use as comedy material. While I'm not going to start preaching about how it's serious and what not, it's not exactly something you joke about to your friends is it!
On topic...I fitted the new alternator back on to the Honda, and all is well. There was a small panic when trying to disable the SRS airbag light. The scanner said the seat airbags and control module had failed, which instantly meant I crapped my pants as they are expensive...turns out I didn't plug the seats back in properly! Lucky escape. Only problem now is that space on my driveway is tight, due to my Dad being lazy and leaving his van here so now my Honda is blocked in by the van and my other car. :/
@ Jakg. If your car came with DOT.4, then use that. For starters, if you rarely use the brakes hard then it's not worth upgrading the fluid. Secondly, you cars braking system has been designed and developed to use DOT.4 (or what ever it uses.) so changing it to a different fluid that has altered chemicals compared to the OEM spec could lead to problems with the seals and what not, although granted it can take time.
Luke, what was the name of the wheels you photoshopped onto my car? Think I might put them onto my potential buy list, as I think they suite the car really well especially in that colour.
About Leepus BMW. It originally got burned up in a fire, then it got rebuilt and sold. It was on pistonheads once. The rear end has 225 width tyres, but spacers over 3 feet, I kid you not! They were HUGE.
That's the best thing to do. It will be fine to use in long weather, as long as you take it off to dry out any moisture every week or less.
@bmwe30m3 - You seem to be handy with photoshop. Once I get my car resprayed, I will start on the cosmetic mods and will eventually get some new wheels and an exhaust system.
Just some nice 16-17'' wheels and a twin exit exhaust system would be cool. You can even lower it a little if you like, even though that's something I won't be doing to this car.
