the graphics card....GDDR4?! When did that come out. also, im not goin over to DX10/vista yet if that helps me get more DX9 performence for less?

Also thats the case i was looking at but wasnt sure if it was any good. Same DVD-RW too. least i know i was kinda on the right track

Seems everyone mentions gigabyte for motherboards, they "the" make to get then? always seemed to be put off them for some reason. Also, my pc is from back in 2002, so im guessing all mobo's would support unlcoked multiplyers if i ignored jakg and went the AMd route anyway? :P

MOTHERBOARD WHICH CAN UTILISE UNLOCKED MULTIPLYERS

Thanks for the info gag but thers a lot of links and this old pc cant cope! cant have msn and two internet windows open at once!

riiiiiight raid 1 sounds a good idea to me lol. one thing i must say though is i usualy partition my hard drives anyway, so if i used RAID 1 for example, would i then have both drives partitioned? and can anyone else see this thread apart from me and stang? haha. seems nobody else wants to help me out

so how does raid work? ive known it mentioned before, but ive only been given very VERY basic explanations.
and id be looking at buying off www.ebuyer.co.uk most probably. though if u find anything on www.autdirect.co.uk for the same price ill get it from there as its round the corner so i wont need to pay postage

okey doke, somewhere i can buy from the UK would be nice next time but i know the cooler.
ahh yes, heard about the barrcuda, isnt there another model too? cant remember what its called now. similar though. also is it worth having two HDD's and making an image/bakcup copy just incase?
also, just for you, budget is about $600-700

Well, after my matest mishap http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?p=706657#post706657 im in need of a new pc. tight budget, talking about £300-£400 max. want something fast and good value for money.

Already have the CPU i want in mind, AMD Athlon 5000 Black edition....has unlocked multiplyers, can be boosted to 3.0Ghz quite happily. Anyone reccomend a good Motherboard that will utilize the unlocked multiplyers (So multiplyer adjustment is a MUST) and of course DDR2 and PCI-e and SATA please. will be the AM2 socket (940??)

Anyone recommend a nice cooler also. and a good SATA HDD around 200GB (prefer it to be a maxtor drive, seems to be the only make that hasnt broken on me or anyone i know) And everything else is up to you, as long as the grpahics card is Nvidia

So i need recomendations for:
CASE
Graphics card
RAM
Motherboard
PSU
maybe a sound card if theres budget left. and anything else ive left out cause i usualy do that

Thanks in advance!

well, a nasty update. im now talking to you via an AMD k-6 450mhz pc decided to try n reseat everything yesterday, the main PSU pin connector wouldnt come out of the motherboard, could lift the whole pc up by it. Pc was turning itsself off every 30 seconds beforehand. turned it on and checked the wires to the 20pin connector and they were very hot, and burnt myself on the bit where the mobo and connector join!!! so now i have a PSU and mobo welded together. and no money, so looks like im not goin to be LFS-ing....or anything much for that matter, until i have a job for a few months.

i dont have a drive or garage. and unless you have about £3000 spare it wont get anywhere near my house any time soon

quick update on the PC: seems to be holding now, took the card out, tried to fit a PCI card which wouldnt fit, so put it back in and its held so far...hopefully re-seating has helped, but it seems to happen if i have a few windows open and anything with a few pictures in it. any ideas? Happened on LFS too, so its confusing me as its not purely 2D based problem

yes, but its not on the road, its sitting in a field waiting for me to get some money
HELP!! Graphics card donations welcome!

got a nice big problem, no money, no onboard graphics, and a card that is slowly packing up. seems to be when in 2d (desktop, normal stuff) itll just freeze in a range of nasty lines on the screen and crash the pc to the point where sometimes on reset it wont boot again. i just HOPE its a GPU problem as i have no money. If i try and "under-clock" the gpu it crashes. but only if i do it in 2D mode. if anyone can donate an old agp card they dont need and dont want money for (it can be a ge-force 4 for all i care!) then please let me know ive got £2, and thats it, and thats towards a bus journey!

seems IE using 200+ MB, might just be the website you were on at the time. i know one site i looked at took up 450mb of ram just for one page no wonder it used to make my pc almost crash when i had 512mb of ram!

try an lsd with something easy (but maybe a touch slow) like 40% power lock, see if it solves your spinning out of corners problem, then slowly increase it till its comfortable, but still fast.

hmm, time to find a smashed up 3 or 5 series then! lol. much cheaper then getting ones made for the capri. would like to do it some time. lights on the capri are about as effective as strapping candles to the bonnet

Quote from The General Lee :Sorry Robt - They wouldn't fit a Capri anyway

Car looks better now.
And they WILL fit a capri. ill have to try n find a pic. but the lights/lenses (the circular bits not the whole rectangle unit) fit the capri exactly, just need shortening a bit in depth.

(i think) what he means is, his current mobo wont allow him to overclock his CPU, so he would like a board that wil hat he can transfer his pc onto. and he would like the X1950pro but it may not be bought the same time as the mobo (but soon after) so is there any mobo that would have agp and pci-e. (which i guess is a no) so a pci-e slot mobo would be more important.

On a side note: brad, can i have your old mobo and graphics card when youre done got a pentium 775 cpu needing a mobo, and u know how crap my graphics card is lol.

notice how its both the same setups (give or take 150mhz) wonder if it happens to sub 3ghz or AMD processors or people with under 2 gig of ram? i know it doesnt happen to me! (amd athlon 2400. 1.5 gig ram, nvidia 5700Le )
