Yeah the only thing I can think of is similar to Hank, if all the cars were under the control of LFS for most of the rolling lap. Another idea is say upon restart your placed in your moving car about 3 seconds from the line under computer control (time to get ready, get throttle in right position etc.), the timer counts down 3, 2, 1 and then your off.
I generally race lead the top division in the AAL so it's my responsibility to make sure everyone is in correct formation and to call the green flag. Like Hank says even in an organised league it's not always easy to get everyone formed up properly.
Some sort of automation like I've suggested would be necessary for public servers to have any hope I reckon.
We certainly don't want to make things too restrictive that's for sure, however yesterday I was on the same server again and I got used to no early restarts.
Still either way I don't worry about restarts much, half the time I'm the one who's made it through clean into the lead and I'll still vote for the sake of the guys whose race was ruined. It's only when there's about 5 or 6 in a row that I start to get pissed off
There is a bug with some of the logitech wheels resulting in a small ffb dead zone in the centre of the wheel. To fix this you need to enable the centering spring but set it to zero rather than just disable it. I certainly noticed the difference on my Momo Racing.
Hmm, chances are this is going to make me look like a fool but here goes. At first I made a sig for myself but then decided I didn't need it so I deleted it. However now my posts have that little line and some space for a sig but with nothing there.
Have I just missed the option to fully turn them off or am I right in thinking it's a small bug?
Personally I think restarts are a minor issue and people make too much of it. The limit we have now with the new patch is just an annoyance, the only time you need to restart is early in the race yet this prevents you doing so.
The way I see it it would be very difficult to get a decent rolling start going on public servers and in leagues you can already do manual rolling starts.
I stick to the one side of the car, switching sides is one of those things I deem to indicate you take the game too seriously or you're willing to go to unsportsman like lengths to get ahead. Like button clutch in S1.
Removing the option from LFS is a bad idea though imo and enforcing sides for particular cars is completely pointless. If anything Haru's idea has some merit if you choose your nationality within LFS or something.
To my mind rFactor and netKar are the only games that are comparable to LFS but there are still some significant differences, mainly in the area of modding. They also aren't out yet so it's difficult to compare.
One thing that concerns me with rFactor is the tuning in the game, it will need strict car classes or something for the online component. It does seem to have a nice variety of cars out of the box though so is similar to LFS in that respect although I don't think it has as many, could be wrong. I do also like the path they've taken re distribution, very similar to LFS so I wish them luck.
netKar Pro strikes me as the likely main competitor for LFS although the "hardcore" crowd is a bit of a turn off. It will have few cars out of the box though which kinda concerns me but will have top shelf mods available on or near release which is important. I trust that Stefano (I think that's his name) will create a very good physics engine for netKar Pro from what I've read through interviews etc. netKar has also taken a lot of cues from LFS and it's development has been quite similar so I have a lot of respect for what Stefano has done/is doing.
The big thing with these two games though is they are going to heavily rely on modding, not such a bad thing but I've never really been into mods that much. It seems a lot of people will buy rFactor on it's modding nature alone whereas I won't and feel it's unlikely I'll buy either just to play a mod.
If it's against the rules of a league to pit back to the garage then they can just ban or penalise drivers that do so, so either way I'm not fussed if this option is or isn't included.
Hallens suggestion is a good one though and yes people would still be penalised the time that they are actually in the sand Cue-Ball.
You may not realise that originally S2 wasn't planned to have any damage model at all, suspension damage was seen as something relatively easy to implement whilst having a large impact on the way people drive.
No doubt we will get a very extensive damage model in the future, most likely with S3.
btw imo there will always be wreckers, irrepairable damage will just be a new toy.
I saw a F3000 race a while back and it was much the same, it made me realise that LFS isn't all that bad when it comes to racer behaviour. One guy deliberately squeezed someone to the inside of the track on the straight, I just couldn't believe that a real driver would behave in such a way in an open wheeler.
My understanding of the way the replays work the game itself is basically the replay viewer. As far as I know when a replay is run all the physics etc. are calculated on the fly so it probably won't be till we get an overhaul of the replays that something like this would be feasible.
I don't mind the idea of demo or S1 people being able to view S2 replays though, rather that than give them extra content in the hopes of getting some more sales.
Yep yep, thinking more about it last night I realised I was wrong and it's just a matter of adjusting the fov correctly. Got mixed up with the differences between tvs and monitors
Maybe something to aid people upgrading to a widescreen monitor, when you choose a non-square resolution the FOV setting in LFS could have an extra bracketed value to represent the equivalent 4:3 FOV. Would save the non maths people doing these calcs.
Then again probably not worth the time.
Don't worry steve I hear ya, LFS doesn't really do widescreen properly. Maybe it is all locked into the fov but the point is it probably shouldn't be. Changing the FOV as in the pics posted by Ant changes your relation to the cockpit of the car, if widescreen worked as it should (well as I figure it should )this would remain static but you would have extra vision on either side of the screen.
Also if at all possible the actual widescreen 'mode' should have a second option to output an anamorphic ratio.
I'm not saying it's a terrible idea, I just don't see much reason to cater any further to demo users. I'm sure they make some pretty darn good skins themselves, I also think it's going to be a fairly rare situation where S2 licensed drivers are on demo servers. You might then say this negates the bandwidth issue but it also means there's not much point doing it in the first place.
The other important point to consider is if you log on to a demo server it's not connected to lfs world in the same way as S1 or S2 servers. No stats are logged and racers aren't logged either afaik, whether you own S2 or not your just another demo racer as far as lfsw, the server and other demo racers are concerned.
Anyway I'm sure the devs have seen your suggestion, if they feel there's some merit to it I'm sure they'll at least consider it
I heard you the first time, hence me saying 'very little reason' because I don't consider that a minority of people being unable to pay 24 pounds at once much of a reason to continue selling S1. There's also always budgeting and saving up for things.
All I'm saying is all things considered if it were up to me I'd remove the option to buy S1 but of course it's not up to me.
Yeah this came up on RSC and there is a definate problem there that needs to be fixed. Cars also tend to get stuck blocking the pit lane which can also create havoc.
A longer session timeout would be nice, not sure if that's the correct term for it but I always seem to spend too long reading or replying to a thread and lose all the last post read information. So I have no idea what I've read already.
Sorry but I don't agree that demo users should be allowed to automatically download skins from lfsw. I paid to be able to use this feature and in doing so have partially covered the bandwidth costs incurred by the developers. It's just not necessary.
No one said anything about forcing anything, if you already own S1 your fine but there's very little reason to continue selling S1 licenses, particularly when circumstances make it virtually an offline only test.
I agree with tristan here, I can't see any real point why you should know where exactly the first three racers are. The only useful information would be a different colour for all cars one lap or more behind you.
You don't really need a seperate colour for cars a lap up on you either as that's what the blue flag is for. I mean it won't specifically tell you a car is a lap up but all you really need to know is that you should let them past.
I think they should either remove the option to buy a new S1 license or set it somehow so that if a dedi server is only using S1 content then it's flagged or something as an S1 server. It would still be in the same server list for S2 players so that they will see it and possibly join. If the admin wants to change something and allow some S2 content he will get a warning saying that doing so will disconnect all S1 drivers.
If they continue selling S1 licenses then they should make a note for people saying that the vast majority of people are either on the demo or S2 and that they might not be able to adequately test out the multiplayer aspect.
To be honest though I think the simplest thing is to stop selling S1 licenses, paying the full price for S2 is not expensive and it just creates confusion. S1 is the old S1 to me, the new S1 is more like S1.5.
I think everything would be so much simpler if there was just S2 and the S2 demo. People who own S1 can still unlock it as they do now but stop selling new S1 licenses.
