I virtually never do a virus scan, don't have any anti-virus software on my system. If you know what your doing things like Norton are just pointless resource hogs.
Yeah I've thought of the same thing on occasion as I'm the same, paddles with formulas and shifter in all others. I spose a quick fix could be to allow two values to be asigned to some values.
I could be wrong but don't the 256MB Ram cards have slower memory? I think that's why they're cheaper. I think 128MB is enough for the time being and the faster memory is of immediate benefit, also consider that LFS uses some small amount of texture memory like 30MB so your well and truly covered there. Also the doom3 engine is designed (or suited) to running the medium detail level on cards with 128MB of memory which is still very good quality so your still covered there even for something like Quake 4 which runs nicely on my card.
Anywho I got the Leadtek A6600GT recently and I'd recommend it, Leadtek seem to be one of the better manufacturers these days. The 6600GT was originally a PCI Express card, the AGP versions have a little bridge chip and I've read that it's important that this chip is a quality one and that the Leadteks do have a quality one. Personally I find it's worth spending just that little bit more for a reputable brand.
Edit: I also just noticed the 256MB Asus card isn't a GT, not sure exactly on the differences but the core probably runs at a slower speed and might not have as many pipeline enabled or something.
Maybe it's similar to loudness where more volume will generally sound better, some more bass probably makes things sound a little better so they go overboard with it.
Yeah along the lines of what CharlieP said I don't think LFS will ever be mainstream and I'm not sure the devs even really want that. They made the game they wanted to make the way they want to make it.
Call me a fanboy but my perspective on LFS is never going to be completely objective, I'll never fully understand some opinions on LFS and how I can feel the exact opposite.
I agree with you about the FXR, it just doesn't seem to be competitive under any circumstances but I think the XRR and FZR should remain the same.
I really like the FZR, not simply because it's fast but but because it's RWD and naturally aspirated and being rear engined it is unique but in the aforementioned league in some races I drove the XRR because it was clearly better.
Also on the topic of S2 being Alpha you simply cannot ignore it. It is not an excuse, it is an explanation. To almost completely ignore this aspect of the game in the review is just not right imo.
Anyway I do feel that Richard has tried to review LFS in a fair manner but like others I feel that maybe he has missed the point of LFS a bit and it's completely different philosophy as a game and as a development process.
Maybe it would be an idea to add a second opinion from someone who feels more favourably, only small but enough to indicate that many feel LFS is a diamond in the rough and that they feel the negatives Richard mentions are overshadowed by the positives.
I guess your right, didn't think about that
I suppose the devs didn't anticipate that people might use the offline mode to practice the way I do.
Anyway I'm no programmer but it all works in multiplayer so it should be pretty simple to have it work in singleplayer right? Well that's what I'm figuring, if it's a lot of work I can appreciate it might not be a priority.
I think in some ways the aussie scene is unique in that we are all focussed on the one spot on the ARSE forum and most of us also race in the AAL. If that weren't the case then I and many other aussie racers would be on in the evenings and the servers would be more populated like in S1 days. I think this is kinda what Ysu was alluding to.
I wouldn't call it an unfair review but I think it misses the point of LFS. LFS takes time and I don't think you spent the required amount but that's ok because maybe you shouldn't have to. That's where the philosophies are different, you seem to want something different out of LFS which is fine but there is a reason why I've played LFS for more than 2 years and that's because overall it is outstanding. You say it needs to reach the levels of mainstream game titles, I say that there are very few mainstream titles that reach the level of LFS. I've played video games for 20 years and LFS stopped me playing any other games for near on a year, and that was S1.
I can appreciate your point of view but from my perspective you focus too much on the negatives and not enough on the positives which are far more numerous.
Anyway, with such limited online experience I don't think you can give an accurate representation of LFS but then I don't expect everyone to put that much effort into it and to a certain extent if you don't like it you just don't like it. In that respect your review is probably accurate for the general gaming public who value similar things and don't have the time to invest in it.
I was sure this was mentioned here previously and I was gonna bump that topic but I couldn't find it, maybe it was posted on RSC.
Anyway, is there any reason why the F12 pit settings don't work offline? For leagues I like to practice long stints to gauge tyre wear etc. but it's quite restrictive atm with none of these settings working. It might come time to pit for fuel and my tyres are still ok but unfortunately the fuel refill percentage is on some low amount because I didn't think I'd even last a full tank. Ideally I'd be able to adjust the fuel refill percentage, pit without changing the tyres and see how many more laps I can do but instead my time is almost completely wasted and I have to start again.
I imagine this would be very simple to do so I ask can you please change this? Thanks
Personally I wouldn't set spring and damper to 0%, people will tell you they add effects to LFS but I don't believe this is the case. Try the defaults and turn down the strength in LFS.
I think there's more to the rally pack than just that interview but then my memory isn't always the best
The form that it might take is anybodies guess, might come with the next update to the physics. What's Eric been up to lately :
I'm not really in favour of ghost cars I spose mainly because they've always bugged me in other games. Now that there's a mod though I think that's fair enough and there's no need to implement them in LFS officially.
People talk in too simplistic terms in regards to this topic, there are so many variables that like I said above they will never be equal. Equal under what conditions? Equally skilled drivers? Sorry but even in leagues you'll rarely get 20 equally skilled drivers on the same server.
The AAL ran a five race GTR series earlier this year and the XRR was a very popular choice, if not more popular than both the others and this is running 1hr+ races.
Would you believe I came third in the DivA race at Westhill in an FZR behind two XRRs and that I ran a one stop strategy when the XRRs ran a two stop strategy? Totally opposite to the supposed advantages of both cars.
This is wrong afaik, Wide Screen Effect is purely to get a wide screen effect on a 4:3 monitor, essentially just the illusion of wide screen. If you actually have a widescreen monitor you need to use a non-square mode within LFS. Under Options -> Screen select show non-square modes.
It's not exactly correct to say that Wheel Turn is "purely cosmetic", with a DFP say you would set it to 720 range which is it's max afaik. Then if you set Wheel Turn Compensation to 1.00 (or it might be 0, I forget) it will automatically adjust to take the same amount of turn of the steering wheel for each car. A road car having more turns than a formula car for example, saving you from having to adjust the amount of turn the wheel will allow with an external program like the profiler or dxtweak2.
The FXR doesn't really seem to be competitive but I think the FZR and XRR should be left as they are. The FZR is not always dominant, the XRR is the better choice in certain circumstances, it all depends on so many different factors that they're never going to be equal all the time.
I don't think it's a good idea, sometimes realism just isn't what makes a game enjoyable to play. It's just another one of these many things that isn't exactly "real" but improves the playabilty of LFS. Sure some people abuse it but one of the things that attracts people to LFS is it's get up and go online play, if you screw up you don't have to sit back for the end of the race wasting precious time.
I'm an admin for a league and we don't really need a server side option for this sort of thing either, you have rules and if people brake them they are penalised.
In the end if you want serious racing you'll really only find that in a league. If I'm on a 5 lap pick-up race and crash or get taken out on the first corner I pit and keep going, I don't want to sit on my arse and waste 10 minutes.
