Quote from the_angry_angel :It appears that people like the beable to "level up" in order to get other cars.. I can't see the appeal myself though tbh..

It's the illusion of accomplishment. This is something easy to see in almost any MMORPG. Lowering your laptime by a second on any track/car combo is an accomplishment but takes long, hard practice. This is similar to improving skills in FPS or fighting games. "Earning" a fast car by driving around for a similar length of time (ie grinding rats in an RPG) is simpler and less demanding but generates a feeling of progress, even if all you've done is invest time and your driving isn't better than when you started out. Not that I have anything against cruise servers. Well, maybe the one that automagically penalizes you for going faster. That's just ass-backwards.

The cars and track look gorgeous compared to previous broadcasts! So much so that now the little 3D grid preview stands out with its lower resolution. The position list works well for the most part, but the text is too blurry even in the high quality video. It becomes completely illegible when the color changes to green or red. I think the text boxes need to be opaque to reduce the amount of artifacting on the text due to blending with the background.

In regards to car markings and numbers, I think next season (if there is one) the number template is going to have to be much bigger to be prominent and visible in the high res video, let alone youtube. Not as big as my roof number, but perhaps something like the big circles they had back before touring cars were covered in sponsors.

Before the race I had been hoping to get a little more screentime but I didn't think I would put on such an embarassing performance!
I suppose I can console myself with the fact that my flub was useful in demonstrating that the STCC now has false starts. :Kick_Can_

I would LOVE to join a league like this, but sadly being a canuck, my time zone isn't compatible for a weekday schedule.

Regarding the forward/back adjustment, don't we already have zoom keys in cockpit view, 5 & 6? Or was it F5 and F6.

There's 3 of these polls that I know of, spread out over 2 or 3 years, and the vote is always 69 or 70% for cockpit view. I think the trend is pretty much established by now.

Nice and Big

Are you such a delicate flower that you can't deal with a single line of - no, half a line of text? If it was flashing or jumping around or a huge image I would gladly agree with you, but really now.

No, but you get it for your PS3 you can use the PSP as a rearview mirror! :uglyhamme

Good commentary, I liked the analysis of suspension damage, even if it's not all that realistic to see it on the fly. Is this going to be available for download later on? I'm getting a lot of rebuffering.

The most likely cause is all the extra contact and physics calculations that have to be done when cars hit each other. I usually get these "lags" in T1 crashes, but if the grid manages to avoid contact I can get very reasonable fps even in T1 with a full grid. One or two hits might cause an imperceptible stutter, but a large number of cars having multiple crashes at the same time causes a severe tax on the CPU. So the big ol' crash you see afterwards with cars flying is probably the cause of the stutter, not the other way around.

Great footage as usual, but the music choice isn't as inspired as in your previous videos. It's simply too downtempo and flighty for the bouncing and sliding going on in the video. I have to agree the music makes it feel a bit like a eulogy.

Quote from Cr!t!calDrift :I have the money..I just don't know how to pay for it..

I'm not spazzing, but hey..

I get asked to buy s2 everywhere I post.

All I need is for someone to pay..I can supply the money..

I don't speak that retarded internet slang.

Finally, irony is a great thing

I see from the flag by your name that you're in Canada, like myself. In that case you can buy it the same way I did. I didn't have access to a credit card or online payments either. Go to the LFS main site and login to the "Welcome Guest" box in the top right. Click on the Buy a License link on the left and then on the Money Order section. There you'll get all the details about what you need to do to complete the purchase. You can get a money order at any major bank. Just take your money, and ask to buy an international money order for £ 24 British Pounds. (call ahead before you go to the bank to make sure you have enough Canadian money to cover the exchange rate and fees)

I think some of those with better systems are getting too defensive about the performance concerns.

No one in their right mind is going to ask that grid slots be reduced or that no new graphics features be introduced. However, it's still important to give the options for those who need it to alleviate load on their system. The current lowest detail LOD turns cars into blocky lego structures. If someone has to deal with that to get a playable 24 fps then so be it. However, I think they should have the option of dialing down their graphics that far if need be. It's not going to stop anyone else from using hi-res textures and 16xAA/AF.

Speaking as someone who has had to tweak a mid-range computer, I think the LOD reduction system is sometimes optimistic about what can be smoothly rendered. Perhaps some form of manual customization is due for the automatic LOD reduction? For example, setting a maximum car LOD level at all times. Or maybe a user defined max number of car polygons rendered, where if (# of cars rendered * #of polys per car) exceeds a certain number, all cars are dropped to a lower LOD. Or even a simple minimum FPS setting that the LOD reduction system tries to maintain.

And so we see how LFS gets its reputation for having teenage FPS clans instead of proper racing teams.
More LFS on ASS

I was rather please to see the new issue of http://www.autosimsport.net/ has an interview with an LFS racing team and race reports from a couple of leagues. Nice contributions, everyone!

Since this allowance of images in sigs is supposed to be a test in league promotion, why not have the userbars automatically act as links to the STCC website?

Quote from Chuckily :How can I protect myself from an Admin that may be abusing their privilages.

Admins don't have privileges, they have rights over the servers they own and run. The ones with privileges are all the client users, including you. On any server your access is essentially at the whim of the local admin. The only way to avoid power-tripping jerkass admins is to not patronize their servers. This goes for any online game, really.

Let's face it, there's not all that many Canadians on LFS to begin with, and only a fraction of those are willing and able to participate in leagues. To attract enough people, any league based in Canada has to be open to the US and ideally, also Mexico and South America.

Personally, I would prefer one of the LRF cars or TBOs. BTW, I'm in Ontario.

I think they might be looking for starting grids and DNFs due to disconnects and whatnot, which are not included in LFSWorld.

Quote from Scawen :The thing is, it's maybe not that bad an idea to "open the windows" a tiny bit just so it sounds "better". Someone here mentioned they did that in their road car on the track and I sometimes open them a crack too on the road, just to hear more because the exhaust is SO quiet with all the windows shut.

Maybe we need open windows as part of the setup!

But if you set the windows to open, wouldn't you also get more aerodynamic drag?

Quote from troy :i hope you dont mind that i remote upped it to some mirrors
maybe it will bring you a bit less traffic

this one was fast for me

IIRC, she wanted to get accurate counts of download numbers this time, so it would probably be better to not set up any mirrors yet.

Quote from N I K I :I can see this is going no where and I'm very sad becouse of it

It's not the first time this same idea has gone nowhere. Not by a long shot. It's failing now for the same reasons it's always done so before. No matter how many polls and suggestions you make there's always going to be people who don't agree with a name.

The only way corners are going to be "named" is through shared experiences that compel drivers to use certain names to facilitate communication. A prominent landmark that can be used as a common reference point. (Monaco's swimming pool complex) Street names on a street circuit. Memorable elements in a corner. (Nurburgring's Carousel) An official name supplied by the circuit owner. Trying to build it by "community" effort will fail because the racing community is a lot bigger than the group who actively participates in the forums.

I see one major but hopefully easily fixed problem with this calendar. It's not viewable if you're not logged in. It would be more helpful to growth of the community if the casual guest users were able to see the LFS league activity at a glance.

To promote this new feature, could its link be put in a brighter color to stand out in the navigation bar?

Quote :I use twin overclocked 7800GT 256mb's, but a lot of people commented on raged edges this round, i'm wondering if I didn't have the correct AA/AF settings when I recorded it, perhaps because I had been playing another game.

That might be it. The video looks really smooth during the Redman/Horvath clip at the beginning. Sometime later on it seems as if the AA/AF was turned off. The difference is very noticeable when you compare Redman's in-car shot to the in-car track preview with Victor.
