Why should a number be retired just because a driver died in it? NASCAR didn't retire it in 63 when Joe Wetherly died or Fireball Roberts. It goes back to special treatment. What makes one driver more special than another?
Pre-1988 you mean. Before that it was a case of how fast will they go. Remeber Dega 87 and that 212mph quali lap?
However my point is that for many, MANY years open wheelers have lived at or above 220mph+ (CART/Indycar at Michigan) and those guys are exponentially more dangerous than a stock car with closed wheels....so if the open wheel guys figured it out.
The #3? Well, Ricky Rudd was the first driver to win in the #3 for RCR. Not Dale. The #3 was in use in 1949. Guess who drove it? Not an Earnhardt. In fact Dale started his career in the #2 and drove the #15, so why isn't Earnhardt Nation screaming for the Captain to give up the #2? Or the #15 for that matter? It works both ways. Yeah Dale was one of the best. Not disputing that but why should he get special treatment? If Richard Petty had died driving the #43 would his fans want that number retired? I don't hear anyone bitching about Aric Amirola driving it this year.
Dale's father drove the #8 by the way. Pop quiz, what number did Jr drive at DEI? Yep, #8
My point is that.
A) It's a number
B) Nobody (save for very exceptional circumstances) deserves a number retired. See MLB and #42. Or NHL and #99 (though I disagree with that move)
Sure in the NBA (for instance) a team can retire a number but is it retired league wide? Last I checked theres guys on other teams wearing #23, just not the Bulls, or #00 but not the Celtics.
IF Nascar is gonna retire numbers they'd eventually have to go to 3 or 4 digit numbers or do what the Modifed guys do and add a letter. It'd get ugly, you'd have Brad in the 2, Joey in the 20N Austin in the 3A etc
I'm waiting for a NASCAR team to pick 27 and a Canadian to go lulz Gilles tribute (which actually didn't Jacques do that in NWS the ast few races, the n number I mean)
I'd like to see that retired across all NA pro sports to recognize his achievement but you know it'll never happen (On that note Mariano Rivera was the sole player allowed to be wearing #42 usually until his retirement this year)
NASCAR should absolutely not retire 3, 43 or any other number however for one very, VERY simple reason...
Sad but true I'm afraid. I didn't hear anyone bitching about John Andretti or how the #43 ought to be retired after Atlanta 1992 and fans launching into Rick Wilson after he was picked. Remind me, when did they whine and bitch again? (Okay admittedly he was over matched but just about anyone would be in that ride in 1993)
Or let's say Jeff had been killed instead of Dale in 2001, would the reaction have been different?
The #3 was made famous by Junior Johnson LONG before RCR and Earnhardt....yet Austin's going to be held to impossibly high standards by some 'fans' who won't be happy regardless of what he does simply because they associate a number with one of the greatest NASCAR drivers ever and refuse to let it go.
In 1964, Joe Weatherly died driving the #8 at Riverside. Bud Moore didn't run that number for a while. Next year, it was split between two teams. It wasn't 'retired' (which is frankly a stupid concept for a number), it was run as usual on the tracks.
He's ready for Cup. Not disputing that or RCR's choice in picking him for the car..
I don't think he'll live up to the stupidly high expectations some fans will have and they will throw him under the bus for not being on pole every time and not winning and not moving people out of the way or doing whatever it that they saw Dale do all the time.
Thing is..He's not Dale Sr 2.0
He's Austin Dillon, he's got a proven track record in Trucks/Nwide, yet there's going to be people complaining he's not Dale Sr at all.
So? He's not, and hasn't ever been the second coming of Dale. NASCAR's changed so much in the past 20-25 years that even guys like Jeff have changed (though yes, age plays into it)
Ratloader, Utility? Wait..classed as a utility? Eh what?
It says Ratloader, muscle both in game and on R*'s sites (social club and so forth). Utility? Try storing the Sadler and see if that works.
Why do I get the distinct feeling the left hand at R* doesn't know what the right hand is doing? Not only that but they make it so you can store one utility vehicle (Sadler) despite that being a utility class vehicle and not intended to be stored. Okay that's odd, what next, they patch out the ability to keep rare supercars in a patch?
Bought it as soon as it was on Steam and was doing well before the patch but now...new patch decided to make sure I have to work for my resources. Is it this bad for everyone or did I get a huge middle finger as an (avian) start world?
Poison planet? Check
Lakes either side of my beam location? Yep.
No wood? Yes
Lab with drops that'll kill me? Sure that's there too.
Either way I'm loving it so far, I just want to be able to craft a hazard suit of armor and get some wood to go to a new planet
Kyle won 5 out of 22 Truck races this year though. They IMO put on the best show out of all of the three main series. N'Wide? Different story. Zzzzzzzzz
However, go back to 95-97, those three years were three of the best. Maybe it was the unknown (at the time) tech, maye it was the right place, right time drivers, but it was great racing.
Am I the only one bored with the #54 in NWS? Not the #22, but the #54's so far ahead it's dull, sort of like Vettel in an F3 or GP2 race in a Red Bull.
Also NASCAR needs cars that can actually pass on tracks lie Charlotte.
Tried that. Wound up with a camper van. I'm having entirely too much fun drifting it (or trying to). I didn't know VW Kombis could actually go fast enough to get sideways. I'd rather have fun to drive cars than an Adder or Entity or ones I can actually modify. Hence my Coquette-LMGT project. Or my RH8 GT project or my Dominator project or.....you get the drill.
My list, as I got given a CE code and it's in no order, I'm taking critique too
Khameleon
Surfer
Gauntlet (selling)
Phoenix (done up like a Superbird)
Ruiner
Khameleon
Carbon RS
Hotknife (destroyed)
Coquette
Dominator
Offroad push bike (not counted as one of the 10 and can I actually go up to a truck and push a buton to put it in? I've been told yes but not had luck with it)
Elegy RH8
Also got a Velum and Tropic with the stim money and earning it. and given cash cards now work that's my project funds, 1.25 million across 3 cars.
The other guy pretty much took him out and went straight. Though having the bright idea of punching him isn't smart really (ask Jimmy Spencer and Lake Speed about that
FINALLY found my Phoenix, with the Superbird wing and iron grille, 70s stock car type? Yep.
Grabbed a Coquette, working on making it a LM spec with wing and rollcage and front splitter and upgrades too. Any other ideas? Also, is there a way I can get rid of a 100k+ car I bought and hate?
Thinking of getting a Cheetah if it's that good, I did borrow a Carbonaizzaire to drive, but hate the handling on it. Then again I dislike the Coquette in the rain too.
But how good would Ray have been at....say.......JGR in the 90s or Yarboroughs team? IMO it was a case of right place, right time and he landed on his feet. Look at what happened with his team (Okay he was banging one of his drivers and Mayfield got ran out of the team due to that) though
