My friend goes to his home town race track, where the amateur dirt track drivers race every Saturday night.

My friend notices that one car, number 7, is completely and utterly destroying the rest of the field. He's lapping 20 cars in 10 laps, and he's passing down low, up high, in mid turn, everywhere, with great ease.

At the end of the 50 lap main event, number 7 wins by 6 laps, and the driver comes screeching into the make shift victory lane in the middle of the track, jumps up on top of his car, and starts throwing hundred dollar bills out into the cheering crowd.

At this point, the driver takes off his helmut, and my friend notices that he has what appears to be a Lemon for a head.

My friend decides "i have to talk to this guy" and
he makes his way through the crowd.

He immediatly asks the guy "How did you get to be such an amazing race driver ?

The Driver says "One day, i found a lamp
on the ground, rubbed it, and a genie popped
out and gave me three wishs"

He continues, "for my first wish, I said,
I want to be the greatest, most talented racing driver that's
ever been"

"Your wish is my command" the genie told me.

"For my second wish, I want to have boatloads of cash
for the rest of my life"

"Your wish is my command" the genie told me.

My bewildered friend said, "WOW!, that's incredible, what
was your third wish, then?"

The Driver replied, " I wished I had a lemon for a head "

I've read on the nkpro forum that the people complaining are just ' guys coming over from other forums like LFS and rFactor, wanting to raise ****'

I guess that noone playing nkpro should have had any interest in, or played on, any other particular sim ? ( well, that would explain some things, but...)

It's irrelevant, in the end. The big thing that's changed after the 'patch' is that the die hard fans are more conviced than ever that life is great, and the people who were mildly to outrageously angry over the first release are now extremely to insanly angry over the results after waiting six months.

I'm curious as to how long it takes windows to recognize and display the
' there are unused icons on your desktop, would you like to delete them ?'

The clock is running.

Joined mutliplayer - fps down about 5 -10 on average - no other players on server. One joined - down a bit more, even tho he wasn't driving, and ended up quitting.

Doesn't even seem to be completely related to computer specs.

Yes, those were my results yesterday. Tried again today. Joined a server with 5 people on. Did not even think to turn fps monitor on, I wanted to see if I could just race.

Did a few laps in practice. People were quitting and joining, or rejoining.
Everytime someone quit or rejoined, I got lag - the kind that either makes your car stop and resume some feet down the track, or, if I happened to be shifting, nothing would happen, suddenly I'd be from 4th to 6th and too low on revs.

Anyway, I stayed in, as prior to the patch I never saw the end of any session, and I did make it to the race. Started at the front and took off.

I drove 2 laps out in front, after the start, no cars were near me, occasionally 2 were visible in mirrors. On lap 3 a giant "Lost Connection" message appeared that would not go away. Lol. I assume it applied to me. As I was suddenly alone, but able to keep racing. During the qualifying, pit board said Position 5, Lap 0, for 7 laps in a row. After 'lost connection' I looked at multiplayer menu, server still running with 3 cars.

It seems better than prepatch, in that I could do SOMETHING on line, but
I've yet to complete a single pickup race. I have cable modem, and with 5 cars on line ( at most, I can't really keep up with the messages )...I should have to deal with a debilitating lag ? It's one thing when the car next to you dissapears, but when you car is freezing and resuming elsewhere....how are you supposed to enjoy the thing ?

My system is about a year old. If I'm supposed to upgrade it to enjoy THIS, I think I'll save my money. I can play LFS with a full field, and COD2 with 40 people on line without a hint of lag.

I fail to see what exactly is so complicated about this game that would make it such a hog.

I'm happy for those who claim it works great for them, but it's dirt simple business sense to understand that a) something's very wrong...somewhere... and b) you want people to be able to play the game you've developed.

If you don't care about the later, at least put a big disclaimer over the whole thing " This product shown to work fabulously on some mid-range systems, horrifically on some high-range systems. Reasons unknown. Your results will CERTAINLY vary. Buyer beware".

I'm trying to be reasonable, but it's frustrating to no end. I feel no motivation to keep trying. I don't give a fig if it's fixed in another 6 months.

EDIT: Wow, that was a lenghty text. I'll paraphrase it. "Don't Work For Me".

Quote from Hyperactive :You can't be serious with that comment. Are you really saying that LFS sounds more meaty than nk pro? Sorry to be rude, but are you deaf?

Not deaf that I know of. I'm referring to the stazzicato sounds, not the samples. The samples are definatly meaty ( somewhat absurdly meaty, in fact), but I don't feel that you get a lot of feedback from them.

The stazzicato sounds, which I was referring to, on the other hand, seem a bit more in the moment, but are weak....weaker than LFS in fact. Might as well be some guy going pptt pttt pttt pttt into a microphone.

Went online to try things out - 9 pm local time - 10 people racing on 14 servers, 5 of which were in a passworded server.

Some points of interest.

The Non-stazzicato sounds never worked for me before. They worked after patch...after driving 15 laps, screen froze with engine sounds looping had to ctrl-alt-delete to get out.

Switched to stazzicato - much better sense of feedback - the previous felt like an on/off switch was being applied - but, the sound itself makes LFS sound 'meaty'. No more lock ups, tho.

Checked frame rate in single player - on front straight of aviano, in target - 200 + fps...wow...through first turn 150 fps...ok...onto backstraight 98 fps. Down to 80 at times, back up in the same areas at each point again.

Joined mutliplayer - fps down about 5 -10 on average - no other players on server. One joined - down a bit more, even tho he wasn't driving, and ended up quitting.

Running an AMD with 1 gig, Nvidia 6600.

Have to agree with other assesments - in Ftarget, literally no way to lose control, short of understeer through turns. Running a set capable of 1.24's ( 5 months ago), was doing high 1.25's and could not spin the car.

Could not assess what would happen with 5, 10, or more cars online, as noone joined the server.

I'd like to give the game a fair chance, but I don't have a great feeling after minimum involvement. I will try again.

Made me anxious to play LFS, however.

Downloading now, or I should say, for the last 35 minutes at a max of 72k/sec.

Oh well. I'm very curious as to whether the multiplayer improves ( i.e. I can play on line at all ).

The whole patch release has been very strange, but, the proofs in the puddin', and I'm close to being able to think about being 3/4ths done downloading it. Glad I'm not starving.

I think S1 / Fox is a great combo, personally.
But what you've observed is good to hear.

There are good FAST RACERS and there are people who can go fast.
The former are skilled, and understand the big picture. And, for that matter, probably enjoy themselves a lot more on a given day.

The only thing worse than being rammed off the track by a noob, is being rammed off the track by a hothead who thinks his birthright is whatever part of the track the person in front of him occupies.

Anyway, I've never had any negative experience at the server in question, and it's good to read your impressions.

Quote from XCNuse :mine? its not a theory, its proven; if you go faster in singleplayer then you must not be challenged by who your racing against online; once you get someone who is challenging and makes you drive faster... you'll get better times

It might be true in your particular circumstance, but you would need more evidence than that to claim it as proof.

What is hotlapping if not a single player mode, with no direct competition ? I usually warm up in single player mode before hotlapping, or going on line ( if there's time, and lots of people playing on a track I haven't been on in a while), and I haven't noticed any particular change in grip.

Not saying that having competition isn't a motivator, but it isn't necessarily the only motivator for everyone.

Quote from Bawbag :Yes a teaser vid would be nice, but I remember when the teasers were put on the main page about the BF1 patch and everyday when I came on to check the site to find there was no patch on yet was depressing. So I guess teaser vids will only make us anxious for the patch and piss people off who don't have patience, i'd rather it was just released without warning.

I agree, it's more frustrating waking up every day and thinking "It's gotta be here today".

I hope it's released without too much hype.
"Here it is" would suffice.

Sound could make some people faster. The adreniline rush could be a psychological motivator for some people. I wonder how things go for people after a week or two of using the new sounds.

I think you'd have to have some room for improvement, in order for the sound to motivate you into going dramatically faster. There's certainly a finite amount of improvement one can make with a given physics package. Someone who's right on the edge already probably isn't going to gain 2 seconds a lap.

I haven't tried the sound mod. I do have better results when I can cleary hear the sounds ( i.e. at a nice volume level) as opposed to having them low or off. I think the default engine sounds provide good feedback, but I would not be upset if they were improved, either.

I'm faster with my shoe mod. sans shoes, that is.

Quote from tristancliffe :I so wonder why it's quite so twitchy sometimes -

Isn't it a function of a tiny wheel base combined with a rear engined design ? I have no idea how much the actual engine weighs.

I drove the thing for a bit tonight after reading this thread, and it was fun. At least in terms of traffic.

A bundle of tracks, or one specfic arena with several tracks designed to take advantage of the car, would be a great addition to LFS.

I searched for a link to videos of the real world car, but can't remember who develops it, so I get lots of Mass Rapid Transit and Magnetic Resonance Technology sites.

Can someone provide a link to their site ?

I used to drive the mrt pretty much exclusively in S1, and I wasn't alone.
It was the only open wheel car, of course, and it was great for close racing. I have a lot of memories of some tremendous battles.

It's still a lot of fun to race in, but overshadowed by the larger open wheeled cars. Since the last patch, every car is much more drivable, too, so it gets ignored.

It's still fun to get into the MRT and drive the small tracks. I hope future updates bring us more tracks suited to the MRT.

If you haven't seen it, google the MRT. The real life version is cool, and takes off like a rocket. Probably a lot scarier to drive.

Quote from jjones :do enjoy the fo8, but instead of me starting a new thread about why fe black never gets used il put it to u here. Have tryed it and takes alot to get use to as there are alot of corners fast and slow pretty damm cool if ya ask me. Whats ur story on feblack?

I really like Green and Gold. I pretty much started out on those tracks and played the heck out of them when I first got the game.

Black feels exactly like green joined to gold with two turns. I know this is obvious, but, when Aston came along, I immediatly started playing the longer track first, and as a result it had it's own personallity. I like the longer Aston's much better than the shorter ones.

I do like driving Black, IF I'm racing people I know, and who are into the longer track. As a pickup race, it multipies all the frustration of a pickup race at a track like blackwood times 10.

Quote from jaws99 :No he has great feedback and is a power seller and i have emailed him teling him about the problem. It took nearly 2 weeks getting here and it's going to charge me a fortune to send it back.

You got defective merchandise, and you have to pay to send it back ?
That doesn't sound right. You paid for a product and paid to have it shipped already. He should be responsible for the return and replacment costs.

As others have suggested, you should check the wiring at the circuit board, check for bent pins, etc, and make sure it's not an easy fix before sending it back.

Does your USB port function with other controllers ?

If you, or anyone you know, has a Volt Meter, you could verify that the power cable is or is not the problem.

Good Luck

I join the others in the sentiment that there isn't a huge rush - the last major update made such a difference, the game is awesome, even in it's unfinished state. Definatly the best money I've ever spent on a video game - probably more for the money than the sum total of all other video games I've purchased.

I also appreciate the honest update. It beats the heck out of " Gee it's a lot harder than we ever could have imagined...we'll try to patch the bugs in a week...or so".

Quote from travbrad :F08 is great now, it's basically the same challenge the FOX was before the tyre physics update. Before the patch it was a monster to drive, but i still drove it I still tend to drive the FOX the most though, just because i enjoy the close racing, BF1 its hard to get people to even race, everyone wants to "qualify" which sort of defeats the purpose of an online simulator if you ask me..

I've loved the F08 since the patch. I've driven it as much as I used to drive the FOX in prepatch days. The FOX is great on small tracks, but too slow for the bigger tracks. The BF is a great car, but sometimes I run out of mountain dew and can't be arsed to focus that much, that quickly.

The F08 has decent speed and greatly improved handling. I've never understood why it hasn't been more popular on servers.

I'm surprised this thread is still going.

Still, I tend to get burnt out on LFS - more from shear over exposure than any inherent problems with the game.

For the last few months I've only been playing other racing games.
I've tried rFactor, GTR2, and netkarpro ( in anticipation of the fix for multiplayer) extensively. To a lesser degree I've played DR too.

Today, I did 5 laps in LFS in 4 different cars at westhill. I have to say, LFS
is simply superior, in my lame ass white boy opinion. I can say that as a long time LFS fan who's put extensive effort into the other current games. Of course, it's all opinion, none-the-less. But I've read a lot of people saying 'you just haven't tried it' or done this or that, so having the spare cash and time, I certainly did try this or that.

LFS has an enimic (sp?) engine sound, and lacks variety in tracks - these are pretty much given, I think, amongst fanboys and bashers alike. But these things don't add up to a hill of beans in the face of the overall package ( an alpha package, too boot).

Anyway, for the other games. Netkarpro is not awful, although I can only play as single player. It feels pretty good, but I can't see anything about it that I would say makes for better racing than LFS. Maybe more tracks, cars, and working multiplayer will be good, but frankly, for me it's LFS but not as good, so, I'll wait and see what comes of it. I open to having my opinion change, but it can only be changed by the game, itself.

GTR2 is fun. Simply fun. It's not in competition with LFS, although the ASS physics mod is an improvement, imo. You can't rule out fun in a video game. I think it will remain a diversion for when I'm burnt out on LFS. Or until LFS introduces some mid-engine sports cars. But I don't feel the need to keep going back to it day after day the way I do when I'm bitten by the LFS bug.

rFactor - Still don't get it. Tried all the mods, tried the ini files offered, tried everything. Great variety of tracks, cars, etc, but I've never found myself gritting my teeth trying to catch a few hundreths of a second as I do in LFS. I do grit my teeth alot wondering why the car is doing what it's doing.

DR - not very interested in the car that's offered, but anxious to see where they go with it.

As for online play, the others worked for me ( not netkar ), but the racing was never as good...I get the usual 'you should join a league' stuff, but I don't want to, or feel you need to to get a decent race. Of course, you can't rule out the amount of time I've already put into LFS, the people I've met, the situations I've learned to handle a hundred times with bad drivers. Still, the online community in LFS racing is generally much more pleasant and satisfying.

Add in how little time is wasted waiting for various elements to load, how easy it is to see results in minor tweaks of settings, how intuitive it is to mod your car skin, etc....how great and transparent the online interface is, and so on...and how immersive the game is as a result of focusing on the simple art of driving....welll...shinier graphics and user mods would probably be a nice addition to LFS, but alone they don't present any kind of threat to it.

I proclaim LFS as reigning universal champ.
I can't help it if my opinion is also fact.
It's just a pleasant coinkedink
