LFS beats the daylight out of it's competition on all levels.
Always room for improvement, but even as is, it is a truely outstanding game.

I love driving the FE tracks, so much so that the last thing I worry about is the scenery. The rhythm is perfect on Green and Gold, forward and backwards.

Can't wait for future updates / improvements ( although to be honest, I'd rather see new tracks and new cars - like some mid / rear engine sports cars - than graphic improvements on existing tracks - but all of the above would be ok, too).

Glad to hear banger is back. I had a lot of fun on their server some time ago. However, I did hate to see more and more people showing up looking for typical racing. They'd get really upset and say 'I was working on my fast lap' or 'you hit me intentionally'. A few odd souls would even try to ban people for 'crashing into them'.

Some people just can't relax, I suppose.

I do the 'T' thing alot too. I also get really angry, in real life, with people who don't understand the physics of their *and my* car.

After I pass them, I flash them a smiley, then wait at the light and say 'good race'

Please say "I'm not fond of Nascar, I find it boring" not "Nascar is boring", because it really isn't. The boring part comes from how long the races are and like was said, all the cautions stalling the racing.

Please say " I find it not boring", because it really is.

Quote from MAGGOT :@Detail - that is what SPEED Channel should be like... instead its all crappy NASCAR programming now.. 8 different NASCAR talk shows, which all talk about the same stupid crap and what time Jeff Gordon takes a dump, and then a NASCAR reality show, and then on top of that, old NASCAR races.

If you're lucky, you'll catch something from this year that is not a NASCAR race. It's terrible... Frown

AMEN! Speed Channel was one of the main reasons I've been suffering with a ridiculous cable bill. Now I'm not sure it's worth it.

They put F1 qualifying on at 2 and 3 am - and it's not even live ! When it is it's understandable, but when it's taped ? They do the same with virtually all other types of racing, too.

Why ? Because they can't interrupt the 6 pm to 2 am barrage of endless nascar drivel.

Wasn't it P.T. Barnum who said " You'll never go broke pandering to the lowest common denominator" ?

Entropy is inescapable, but that doesn't mean it doesn't suck.

Quote from AndroidXP :@Flycantbird: Make sure you have the latest DirectX and GFX drivers installed. Normally your card should support pixel shading fine.

Thanks,

I reinstalled the demo, and selected 640x480 instead of 800x600.
Not sure at this point which solved the problem, but I got the game started and didn't want to back out once it was going.

Looks like a fun game. Got better after driving the course a few times, but the poor co-driver was definatly getting winded ( an awful lot of 'OOOFS' coming from that side of the car ).

I guess I'll have another racing sim on the hard drive soon - but probably one I'll play now and again - not namie-ing any namies.

I d/l'd the RBR demo to see what the fuss is about - I get a 'general pixel shader error' before the game ever starts, and crash to desktop.

Nvidea 6600 and plenty of RAM, and haven't run into problems with any other modern game. No idea what to do at this point.

Sad when people steal skins, but far sadder when they argue that they created it to begin with. It's one thing to be stupid, quite another to delude your SELF.

Of course "I kill you" TYPED to someone indicates this guy isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer.

"I'll kill you ! Please provide your name, address, and directions, and if you are in another country, I'll have to get my passport in order first. But rest assured, I will kill you.

Not a big fan of oval racing, myself, but that doesn't mean that others can't and shouldn't be able to enjoy it.

When Champ Car was Cart ( prior to the IRL split ) it WAS kind of cool that they'd race 16-18 races, some on road courses, some on street courses, a couple on super speedways, and a couple on mile long flat ovals. It was fun to watch, and it was fun as a video game ( Papyrus Cart Racing).

Also, for an 'Oval', the Indianapolis track is a bit different, with the 2 turns broken up with a short straight approach. It was always kind of fun to play in traffic. Kyoto is more like the old Michigan Track.

Anyway, if people wanna play / watch oval racing, that's their choice.

I do agree with other comments that a Champ car would only be very similar to the other open-wheelers, other than it's exterior rendering.

If LFS was to expand it's oval racing and / or incorporate something 'american', it might be interesting to include sprint cars, which run on dirt.
It would combine what a lot of people are fond of - light weight/high speed cars, ovals, drifting, dirt .

Just a thought, not a campaign.

Quote from IReallyHateBureaucracy : It's all very well watching but you have to try it live (as in live radio ) to really get it, I think.

When i was new to LFS, I would ask faster drivers if they could help me, and in an appropriate place - such as a server with only a few people messing around, and not a full server in mid race - and they almost always
were willing to help.

It's hard to believe how many people just jump into a full server, in mid race, crash in the first turn, or into someone else, go the to pits, and repeat the process until the race is over.

It would be good if the training lessons were 1) manditory and 2) included basic RACE skills. Things like joining the track when other racers are already racing, rejoining the track after going off, and so on. Maybe incorporate some of the CRC rules into a lesson that had to be completed.

I don't think it could be a training lesson, but, it would be great if there was one that taught people to not ask for restarts 5 seconds after they join a server...especially in 5 lap races....and NOT say "Hey Race Leader, can I have your set?" in the middle of the race.
AI Setting Pb's while not on track

This has happened to me twice in one week.
I am in multiplayer mode, but choose to start my own game, and make it 'hidden' so I can practice but still record any pb's i might set.

I am playing alone, noone can join, and no AI cars are on the track

But as I cross the finish line, I get a pop up "AI1 has set PB"

On west hill, while diriving the BF1, I get the message

"AI1 has set PB: 55.22" ! !

Impossible time to boot. Again, there were no AI cars in the race.

Earlier in the day, I had been racing, in single player mode, against some AI, but I say again - there was no other car on the track while I was in multiplayer mode.

Not a huge deal, but I thought I'd point it out. It actually made me laugh.

I haven't watched the replay yet, but I've thinking today about something.
I've been on a server about 5 times in the last two weeks where a certain person who has numerous wr's showed up, and each time was one of the slowest cars in the race.

Kind of peculiar that this thread showed up now ( from my perspective).

In watching the video, I can't help but come to this conclusion:

The Renault is a Real F1 car.

The BF1 is a cartoon.

The Renault driver is deeply focused, because he could die with a tiny mistake, or at least destroy a very expensive machine.

I on the other hand, am sipping mountain dew and answering the telephone as I cruse down a long straight at 200 mph. The reset botton is an inch from my thumb. I'm noticing my shoe is untied, and it's really bugging me.

The Renault driver isn't saying much

I am saying " Hang on, hairpin....ok...yea...bring home more scotch and oreos....ok....yea....ok....gotta go....ok.....hang on.....shit....ok...gotta go "

The Renault driver is very lucky, indeed.

I should probably consider having my self frozen, because the two vastly different worlds won't be confused with each other for a rather long time.

I should mention, I don't have a problem with any of this

Sorry, I didn't read every reply.

Some problems I've seen with my Momo - the centering fix was fixed by the momo racing wheel patch, however from time to time there are still some odd problems, they've only been a nusiance more than a continuing problem.

Here's what I do, hopefully it might help someone.

Before I start LFS, I go the windows game controller icon in the control panel, and calibrate the wheel.
Then, I start lfs, and as the start up screen plays, I turn the wheel fully to the left and right, and press both pedals to the limits.

Occasionally, the wheel seems to get slightly off, or I lose the top 5% or accleratation. At that point, I unplug the usb, plug it back in ( while lfs is running ) and recalibrate in LFS.

The accleration problem hasn't happened in a long time, and I think it's just starting to happen now because it's been over 3 months since I've done a good pedal cleaning.

The steering problems are very rare, in my case, and unplugging / replugging corrects it, usually for months at a time.

Fordman,

There are some real idiots, and as people say, there are just some EXTREME noobs out there right now, too. It was the same when S2 came out. Eventually they'll either get bored, or get better, one hopes.

Sometimes it's really hard to tell. Someone buys the game, for whatever reason, with no knowledge of real world driving, and is thrilled by the (occasional) chance to pass somebody - hence heading into a hairpin at 30 mph too fast, with no thought of exiting the turn, just passing a car.

In the real world, no such person would ever get near a racing car.
It would be good if LFS could implement some kind of 'career mode' approach to who gets to race what, where, etc.

I don't have the full details in mind, but like in the old single player mode..
once you have your liscense, you can only go online in certain servers running a certain car, or range of cars. You have to finish 10 races, or finish so many in a certain range of positions, before the next 'group' of cars are made available.

You could still run all the cars you wanted in single player mode, but you have to progress, while on-line, through stages.

I can hear the possible complaints, difficult to implement, not fair, etc...but the bottom line is LFS isn't meant to be an 'arcade' type of game.

As far as servers - LFS is so much fun since the patch, that I'm actually driving nearly every car, something I'd never done before, and getting decent in some that I never thought I'd drive. If I were to join a server with experienced people, in a car I'm new to, I'd still probably get into trouble...so I just try to get better and have fun right now on an empty track.

You can always start your own game - even if you can only support 5 or 7 players..you have admin rights, and once the server is full of people you are comfortable with, you can ask everyone to move to an empty server that supports more people - as more people join, you have your base of 7 serious players who will back you up on kicking or banning the real idiots, or at least mutually not tolerate their behavior.

Just some random thoughts.

I have yet to see any pictures of the pedals, and more important, I've yet to read any (official) mention of the quality pots they plan to use - this being an ever present fault and complaint in the Momo.

Just saying, I'd like to hear an official "this is going to be different, because we've heard your complaints and addressed them by..."

Still, I'll be buying one. The Momo (black) isn't the greatest wheel, but for the money it's pretty good. The $100 I spent over a year ago on it is long forgotten, but I've sure had a lot of fun with it.

Incidently, they mentioned there are several buttons, just not on the wheel ( several on the shifter, they say, but I haven't seen any good pictures).

Two on the wheel is good for left and right view. If I have to reach a couple inches for the reset button, it's no big deal. Other than the views, reset and a horn I don't think I've had a use for the remaining buttons on the momo. At least none that immediatly affect driving.
