Quote from Niels Heusinkveld : http://insideracingtechnology.com/tirebkexerpt2.htm

Lots of food for thought at that sight thanks for posting Niels

http://insideracingtechnology.com/disccosmo.htm

On reading the above commentary and with what I have observed in LFS I have a gut feeling that any improvements in LFS tyre physics will come from tunning tyre load sensetivies.

Currently in LFS loading up the outside tyres produces more grip (with driver position and stiff ARB) this is clearly a no no IRL, so points to a likely flaw in LFS's tyre physics in regard to tyre load sensitivities at the limits of grip. This could be having an effect on longitudinal as well as lateral grip.

Also this could well be closely linked to the tyre pressure issue in LFS now, as with low pressures I'd assume should exaggerate tyre load sensitivity issues but in LFS you seem to get more grip no matter how low you go

My guttometer is telling me that while the overall traction levels in LFS seem about right the individual tyres aren't. Which is why you see such strange setups compared to RL.

What do you think?

Quote from richo :I must say i admire everyones loyalty and zeal, so quick to become defensive and so quick to attack anyone that has anything different to say.

It's not a matter of who's wrong or right the reality is your as right as i am right. It's just a different perspective.

At the end of the day it's Scavier's project and the way they choose to do it is the right way, it's their choice and they are ultimately resposible for it's success or failure not us.

Not everyone's going to groove on it but so what
It doesn't matter what ever you do in life there will always be someone that thinks it should be done differently, and how you choose to do something comes down to your personality and life goals.

Petrol prices have been pretty steedy here for the last 3-4 months but thats only because of our rapidly rising dollar - if our dollar takes a hit it is going to really hurt it will be a double wamy

Quote from Alric :It's just human nature, some people get bored quicker than others but as soon as there is something new to try, their back.

Thats so true there is a couple that I bump into on each new major patch release and then never see them inbetween times but that's mostly because alot of the original guys don't go on public servers much anymore unless they are testing a new patch

Good to hear from some active oldies still enjoying LFS

Quote from richo :But back to the topic, its taking too long and there customer base is walking away which is a bloody shame.

And you base that on what?

While I can agree with you that some old timers have drifted away, there is still many that are here and active.

Also from my recolections LFS's user base is stronger than ever. Last nights peek was 1400 racers, back when I joined in 2004 a good night was 700. That tells me while some older ones may get bored an move on there's more than enough new blood to keep things going

Quote from JTbo :...specially those where it is harder to use all engine's potential.

So your ideal combo would be LX8 on SO Classic hmm I think that would be awsome too had an absolute blast in the LX6 there last night. And some LX4 fun on WE1 and AS Club LX8 on those combo's would be pure driving pleasure

I previously had a satelite connection.

Only used it for general internet usage because of poor latency, you can't get around the fact that each packet is traveling more than 60,000km out into space

I used 56k dialup for LFS and then ISDN when I could get it. Incedently ISDN has the better latency than ADSL which I'm currently on.

Loose the passengers seech you want to spoil all the fun, haven't you heard of a hoe down? Thats the best fun in LFS

imo the reason you see engine braking so much in LFS is that you can't feel anything through the brake pedal so it does enable more consistent braking for that reason alone in real life you don't have that problem so braking at the limit is much easier to achieve

If you want to race the AI (god knows why :razz I'd suggest the road cars on S1 tracks, as the AI hasn't yet been properly updated for S2 cars/tracks and current tyre physics/ aero (that is one thing Scawen is currently doing )

Don't know if you can use the voluntary panelty air restrictor in single player but that would be a good way to balance yourself against the AI also.

Quote from Tweaker :I'd much rather have slight race-spec versions of all the roadcars to use, that would be great fun. Like some amateur touring/cup car models with slight more power and grip.

Quote from Hamed Sam :is it good ?????

camber???

pressure???

toe????

thanks for your help .

my record is 1:33:86

but i feel the car is not complete!

Well if it's duck's setup then of course it's good

You have two choices when a setup doesn't feel complete, either learn to drive the set (i.e. adjust your driving) or adjust the set to your driving style

If your still relatively new to LFS I'd suggest learning to drive the set as it may well help you get faster also.

If you choose to adjust a set to your driving, it is very subjective and you will need to be quite specific as to what the car is doing so that we can give advice on what changes might have a positive effect for you. Also keep in mind some sets are made for specific controller types. The set I'm currently driving would be a nightmare on mouse or ks but is great fun with a wheel as it uses clutch pack with quite strong brakes and more rear bias than most

Quote from McTaggart :Ok, to be honest I just assumed that a ping over 400 would be unplayable. I never actually tested it. I'll give it a shot tonight and see how it works.

Busted bet you didn't expect another Perthite to catch you out

The thing I find is ping is just one factor, the most important factor is the stability of the internet between you and the server your connecting too. Sometimes I can connect to a server in the 200ms range and lag out continually, while I can connect to a server around 400ms that is perfectly stable, so there is much more too it than just ping

I find servers based in America and Europe to be quite good, while servers in Asia, South America, etc to be poor regardless of ping reported.

Also the quality of your ISP can be a factor.

Lol glad it made some monday blues less blue

@ al yeah in LFS all cars should have tow bars and no roo/bull bars allowed that will fix em I remember someone rear ending me once, the practically wrote their car off (holed the radiator and crumpled front end) and I drive off with barely a scratch

Quote from tristancliffe :Just look in your mirrors. It's obvious who is going to keep their foot in through the braking zone. You just get out of their way. Then pass the cars that didn't look, and got hit. Simple. Works for me every time.

can't say that works for me everytime but yeah quite often

Quote from goop :A proper defensive driving course incorporated into the licensing process would be a good place to start.

Proper driving courses would be a good start I agree, but I don't believe it would be enough. It might actually encourage some to be more aggressive

I think there is not enough 6 ft 300 pound police offices to give you a good shacking up these days. I still remember some of my encounters with burly cops on the other hand I hardly recall speed camera infringments, I just don't think speed cameras are an effective deterent.

Quote from goop :You don't need horsepower to kill yourself, though.

It's true you don't need horsepower to kill yourself but there are alot that die because they have horsepower especially in country areas, I know of several cases of young blokes doing deliberate drifts around bends at 160+ km/hr that have come too grief.

I don't understand why they don't limit P plate drivers to uncustomised low powered cars, similar to bike licenses. Young blokes wanting to show that they are men and powerful cars are a recipe for disastor imo.

Quote from McTaggart :Downloading from overseas is no problem as throughput is fine, but playing on overseas servers is impossible with such high latency.

oh really I've been playing LFS since 2004 on all types of connections from Perth including 56k dialup, 128k ISDN and now 8000k/384k ADSL almost exclusively on european servers without too much problems

All were good but on the slower connection types I just had to watch that I didn't connect to full servers, and disconnect if a server filled up too fast .

56k dialup could handle 8-10 connections well
128k ISDN - 12-15 connections
And I find with ADSL that 15-20 is best for European servers.

With Aussie servers it could handle more obviosly, but with the limited server choice and my odd hours I always ended up on European servers.

Quote from frokki :It definitely improves realism. If you have a race car IRL, you don't frigging swap the seat and controls for different tracks...

Yes but in real life if I was in a race serries in Australia I would have a RHD car but then if I flew to the USA I'd jump into a race car for an event it would be drive LHD

Also if you want to improve realism like that, then you should restrict the use of cars to just one for a season as not many real race drivers drive more than one or two types of car in a season

I agree with Abdroid in that I don't see a problem, you can stipulate what side is used for a league so whats it matter about public servers

Quote from Woz :The other problem is the law, which gives them access to these cars because you don't need insurance.

Interesting thought hadn't occured to me before.

In my day a teen simply couldn't afford such high powered cars, these days it's much too easy to get credit I guess

So making it compulsary to have comprehensive insurance would help prevent the current insanity. Failing that I'm sure the easy credit times we have now want last forever infact I predict less than 2 years

Quote from Hankstar :I do so many long road trips each year I'm amazed I've not been taken out by some half-asleep idiot/drag-racing hick myself yet.

Meh I've thought the same many times...
