Quote from filur :Opera.. sessions.. mmmm..

firefox has it too, but do you have any idea, how how many clicks require to check if you beated your hotlap for a certain combo and if positive, then browsing to the file?
you don't know how lazy i am...

@biggie
i agree with most things you said, fighting for wr is a distance fight enjoyable just as online racing...sorta similar to rallies when racers don't see the opponents car, they only run against time.
a long ago i one of those who thought that top hotlappers like you, just live behind the wheel, but as my skills improved i realized that the more experience you get the more you adapt to any track and setup any car is much more easier, but clearly people like you are a mixture of talent, training, experince and determination and it's very true that you are the people that show us the very limit of each combo...the first thing i do when i joing an online race with a first time combo is to check the wr so that i know that if i am more than 2 seconds from wr, then i'm damn slow and i have plenty of room for improvement so that i can fight for the podium

i have voted for the first option, but that actually means that i upload only if i know for sure i beated a wr, with previous patch i did it getting even 20 or so wr that lasted for some time, but soon i got bored of checking lfsworld, then upload...
the reason why hotlap is when i race for first time a combo online and after i consider worth creating a decent setup, so hotlap mode is the best thing, since i got bored of chechink lfsworld i've never uploaded an hotlap since months, if lfs would have an integrated feature to check wr and position and upload hotlaps from hotlap mode i will do, otherwise too much work opening firefox browsing lfsworld, check if i beated my best hotlaps then upload...i'm damn lazy!

Quote from filur :What i'm saying is everyone has an ASIO card, even integrated $0.5 chips.

Attached is a realtime recorded clip of my budget realtek chip on my budget motherboard playing 9 channels of asio sound, using 6 different virtual instruments and 2 mastering plugins. At 16.6ms latency (DirectX).

oh you're right i didn't figured so many cards are asio now, all the time i watched specs of recent motherboards (even on asus site) there's no mention of asio support...
so i guess that people with no asio hardware prolly have so outdated hardware that they will not run anything newer than windows xp.

Quote from Becky Rose :You mean that woman on the LFS forums with the exceptionally long memory, jakg ? ...

rotfl...i remember that discussion...actually i have such a long memory, but i don't remember if it is a good thing or a bad thing...oh, what i was talking about?

Quote from filur :Not really, ASIO has had DirectX drivers for over 7 years. With reasonably simple content such as LFS' engine sounds a budget card/chip should easily be able to run with latency well under 20ms.

There's also http://www.asio4all.com/ (WDM).

this is a good point, but you'd be surprised about how few people have an asio sound card...moreover it is some years that audio is integrated on motherboards, so how many people would spend on more hardware just to play lfs? imo it would be not a smart move regarding marketing, while technically i agree with you.

Quote from DEVIL 007 :I have some feeling that Vista might end like Windows Millenium. The biggest mistake in MS history.

that's my hope but it would be much harder because ms marketing now is the most aggressive than ever, when companies buy workstations the hardware resellers put hardware+windows preinstalled at cheaper price than only hardware and there's no deal...that way windows on workstations will be hard to die...

Quote from Boris Lozac :So if you manage to do something about it, it would be great, but it's not a problem if you can't, i know that it is really hard to do it with this mapping, i know when i was doing my wheel, and the leather xf interior, the mapping is crazy as hell..

i will fix it...and that's a promise!
"bug" is not a word of my dictionary...
seriously, i know how to get rid of these problems, it's only a matter of how much time i "waste" on it...in fact i named those first verions "alpha" because i considered somewhat unfinished.
fixing those issues, makes me more knowledgeable about texturing lfs tracks and hopefully that will mean better textures in the future...
Quote from nutty boy :Lovely texture there Honey. Keep up the good work.

thanks guys
cheers

maybe i didn't remarked enough in my first intervetion...solution exists: Kernel Streaming, but that means scawen will have (if he wants to support vista) to reimplement any part of the lfs sound engine...let's say a third of lfs should be reimplemented...
for this a many other reasons i thing that the gaming industry, will be the last to support vista...if that happens, ms maybe will be forced to step back with a service pack for "backward" compatibility.

Quote from joen :You're right. Damn, I didn't know about that. I just did the test again but now using IrfanView and it ends up a whopping 3 MB
I though it could be possible considering the big black areas in the skinfile and the relative low ammount of colour difference in this particular skin.

Thanks for pointing that out, I hereby completely withdraw my support for this idea

it's a shame for a great product like photoshop, to have such a stupid bug (introduced with latest version), i suggest to don't use the os dialog for saving...but the other is quite weird too
cheers

Quote from joen :PNG mostly shows it's quality in smaller files (for instance small graphics in webpages). It's more of an alternative to GIF then to JPG.

But I just saved a 2048*2048 psd of one of my skins to jpeg and png. The jpg is 320KB, the PNG is 290KB. The filesize will probably vary per skin, the ammount of colors being one of the biggest factors, but still I think filesizes will be smaller or not much bigger.

i bet you used the latest photoshop version, which has a damn bug, it fooles user when choosing extension, you probably just saved a file with png extension but with jpg file format and compression.
png is lossless and thus it is HUGE!

Quote from NetDemon01 :
Well it didn't do it again. Very odd, but I guess it was just a one time thing.

no it happens rarely on regular servers and quite often on this test server, the problem is that your car is "invisible" in other words your udp packets are not handled by the server, this is triggered by spectate/away states, check my post http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?p=174173#post174173
i am starting to think that it has to do with insim.

Quote from Boris Lozac :Hm, i am having a problem with the Aston texture.. I see those litlle lines that apear and disapear, like that line in the middle of Blackwood, but they are shorter and smaller.. It is kinda anoying, don't know if you could fix that..

i'll look into it, but i need some days either because i have little time, but mostly because aston it's a "matrioska madness"...the mapping is one of the most weird things i saw in my whole life...

are you using the bright od the dark version? did you tried the other version? if yes, has it the same problem?
and just for the record, can you tell me what AA and AF are you using and if you have an ati card or nvidia?
i'll try to find the time tomorrow towork on it, otherwise i'm afraid i cannot fix it before saturday
cheers

not to mention that before asio came out, that was the most common technique for application dedicated to musicians for real time audio effects, who has ever developed will see it as it is: a damn bug!
who is not a developer, may be mislead from microsoft advertisement...that's just sad that road that the TCG is trying to impose...

Quote from sil3ntwar :Im assuming it will be possible to record our own radio comms for use in the program? Not that i have anything against your voice :hide:

some poll showed that Becky's voice will be much appreciated by most of lfs'ers ...honestly i will appreciate it too because it will add a feminine touch and a bit of variation from other race games dominated by men's voices...
...maybe it can be configurable to have a male voice or a female voice (or a choice from voice1, voice2, voice3, etc.)...so to match every taste

amazing! now you have virtually the potential to implement "anything"...i beileve Scawen will find this mod a precious reference as a "proof of concept" of what some underestimated things can bring to lfs...

i think gtl has prerecorded sounds, so it is not affected by this vista bug (yes to me IT'S a BUG!)

i will not start a discussion about "trusted computing" or will not stop (), but it's clear that starting from vista, users and developers will be no loger the owners of their own systems...

since vista support is taking so much time from devs, my sugestion is posticipate it after S2 final (if it was for me i will never support vista :nod

whoa Becky! you had a great idea! even from the "buggy" lx video it was clear the potential of this mod, ijust watched your video too and it's very nice!!! congrats! istill haven't the time to try it by myself, but it is clear it gives more immersion...
may i ask for some additional things? i don't know if someone already mentioned it, but it would be nice to add the noise of pitcrew when doing pitstops, brake noise, messages from pits (for your vid i see you are working on it ) for low fuel, your follower gained more that 2 seconds on last lap, your follower is at less than 1 second from you, noise of puctured tyre maybe mixed with some noise of rim touching tarmac, noise of spectators when you do a pass or get passed.

keep up with this excellent work!

i assume you have an home dsl router or similar and it has a web interface. nowadays every home router has nat/pat features and that's what you need!
nat = network address translation: you set the lan ip of your server (i.e. 192.168.0.3) and that will make your router translate your public ip address into your server lan ip...in few words, your server becaome totally visible to internet.
this is the simplest solution, but it exposes your server to cracker attacks and believe me...either you are using windows or linux, unless you are a super geek, your server will be cracked in less than one hour (and you will not notice)
the best solution is pat = port address translation.
basically you have to set into your router one rule for each tcp or udp port your server have to expose to internet.
a rule needs you to specify the port number to expose to internet and the port number of your local sever -> for god's sake put the public port equal to local or you will have unuseful headaches
then you must specify also the lan ip of you local server and also the range of internet addresses allowed to connect -> put "any".

i believe the lfs standard port is 63392 set a rule for udp connection to that port, i don't know what tcp port lfs uses but you will need a rule for that also, to find it type "netstat -a" without quotes into windows command prompt (start->run->cmd)

hope it helps
