Quote from Ian.H :You might not have any problems because my guess is you don't _really_ use the OS.. you just run pretty apps on top of it.

STFU Ian you don´t know anything about what I do and don´t do.

You know your girl is cheating on you when she buys you a racing sim that will keep you hidden away in your room for hours at a time

I suppose that´s another way of looking at it

space machine?

Somehow I don´t think you´re an LFS racer but a drifter bummed about not having the XRT anymore. And considering you just registered today maybe even a duplicate account?

Little late, but
Quote from wolfshark :D@mn everybody is getting me so wrong...

Gee, I wonder how that's possible?

Quote from wolfshark :"Restrict the download to liscensed racers only"
That isn't fair! I am demo user since the first release of S1 and i absolutely love this game, but i can't afford it.

Quote from wolfshark :
I am an excelent student and i can buy S1. I also can buy S2 but i find it expensive. I can buy a 42" plasma if i really want it.

Please don't call restricting it to licensed users unfair if you aren't being fair. You simply choose not to buy LFS, which is fine by me, but do not complain about not having all the benefits that come with being licensed. And certainly don't use things like your nationality as some sort of plea for pity, it's lame.

Well, it should be wherever you installed LFS to. The "lfs" part is just an indication. Look up your main LFS directory, and there is a data folder in it, and inside that one is a skins folder.
joen

You need to save the skins you made in your lfs/data/skins folder. Make sure you named them identically to the ones you uploaded to lfsworld. Select the skin you want to use in your car setup screen, under "Info"

Quote from Fischfix :yea... later stages maybe when S3!!! is released in 5 years...

I that's how long it's going to take, then so be it. If that's not acceptable for you, so be it.
Still, they have their own reasons to only (possibly) allow modding when the time is right. You're presenting what you think are the reasons as some sort of fact.

Quote :
they did not bring much into the game the last 2,5 years, so why should this change.

If you only consider content valuable then I guess not, I personally feel LFS has changed a lot and has improved significantly because of it.

Quote :
(BF1 as a present from BMW and intel, and AGAIN an open wheeler with that new junior class thing...)

The BF1 was a deal with Intel, the FBM was a deal with V1/Fortec. And what do you mean with AGAIN an open wheeler? 5 out of the 20 cars are open wheelers. Anyway, I think it's a great addition to LFS and it seems to be a succes. Plus, people are constantly whining about wanting more real cars, there is one.

Quote :
they earn lot of money, have fun as it is and only bring really new stuff once a year.

How do you know how much money they make?
And if you're so dissapointed in the amount of new stuff, how about you make a simulator and show us how easy it is to put out new stuff constantly?

Quote :
and btw. when they brought the BF1, they killed the FO8 in the same moment for a long time (until patch Y... now its fun again)

Nonsense. Apart from the oval the FO8 wasn't even popular before the BF1 showed up because it was too hard to control with the physics at that time. It became much better when that particular patch came out because of the physics improvements but people didn't really notice.

Quote :
thats true, but who gives a shit

Well, considering rFactor is quite different from LFS and neither you or I know how modding is going to be (if it comes anyway), presumably there are legal concerns to take into account, which make me presume the devs give a shit.

Quote :
i don't think LFS should change in the rFactor way but to be honest 1 new car (again an open wheeler...) and a track variation a year is not enough.

Once again, what do you mean again? Just because it's not your cup of tea doesn't make it worthless.

Quote :
if they want, they could have plenty of good car/track designs from the community and even test them before releasing them, but they refuse to do so. why?

As has been stated time and time and time and time again, because they don't want to. Just because you do not agree with that philosophy doesn't mean the question has to be re-asked over and over again, as there is not going to be a different answer to the same question.

Quote :
not because the game is not finished, but because they are happy as it is now.

Once again, stop pretending you have all the answers and know every motivation behind every decision.

Quote :
of course there are plenty of improvement suggestions
and with the current tempo of implementing it the game will be finished in 2108. the clock runs against this game which is sad, as i have stated before, its a good game.

Not every improvement suggestion is worth implementing.

Quote from Fischfix :and to be honest these games give a shit about licenses and this for years now without any big problem so far. (forget the license-fact when reading about mods for lfs, its just plain bullshit, the only reason we do not have mods in lfs is, the developers want to do everything by themselfs and they are not willing to create new content. its NOT about the license costs.)

The only reason we do not have mods ATM is because LFS isn't finished and the devs have hinted several times that modding MAY become part of LFS but certainly not before later stages in LFS development.

You state a lot of things as facts while they are nothing more than assumptions on your end. i don't think you have the ability to read the dev's minds so how would you know they are not willing to create new content?

Oh, and BTW, there have been mods for rFactor that got a cease and desist order so your statement/fact about licenses doesn't hold up.

Quote from P5YcHoM4N :Indeed, but LFS S2 is S1 with new cars.

More like S1=S2 without S2 content as S1 gets all the updates to the core of the game.

Quote from Electrik Kar :I haven't actually seen any real world products featuring OLEDs until now, but probably they're being used in recent phones and things that require smaller screens.

My MP3 player has an OLED screen, and there are a couple of (very expensive) keyboards coming out which use little OLED screens on the keys.
But I guess it still hasn't got enough benefits over LCD for big screens.

There should also be the option to meet girls, take them out to dinner in down town south city and get virtually laid, then have her get pregnant so you get a virtual kid so you have to marry her and spend more of your virtual money on them, but you have to keep your e-woman happy because otherwise she will leave you and take your house and your car preventing you to use any cars in LFS and you will have to whore yourself on the south city docks to get money for a new car to cruise.

Weird options mostly.

I didn't choose LFS, it chose me

Actually it was some sort of "click" I had with it, not easy to put into words. It just felt right, it wasn't like anything I had played before. The physics, the cars and tracks, the feeling I got from it, the simplicity and clearness of the interface, the easiness of getting a race online, the skinning abilities, later on the community, the way you feel connected with the game because of how the sim is developed and the way the devs interact with the community, the list goes on.

Quote from Ian.H :- Not every company blatantly steals their ideas from other companies.

Get real. It happens all the time.

Quote :
- Not every company produces a PoS everytime they do produce (read: rehash) something.

Blablabla, fud. I seriously am not an MS fanboy but if you're trying to tell me everything MS makes is crap you're talking out of your arse. Their peripherals like I already said are not crap. Vista is crap, I'll grant you that, but I have no problems whatsoever with XP.

Quote :
- Not every company is trying to be a monopoly.

MS isn't even in this market, so how would they have a monopoly or how could you say anything about their desire to? Oh right, they have a monopoly on the OS market so they have a monopoly in every market they wish to step.

And I'm pretty sure most companies wouldn't refuse (near) monopoly in their market if they had a chance.

Not really interested in taking this further.

Quote from epp_b :Sigh...more Microsoft "if you can't beat 'em, buy 'em"

Companies buying other companies happens all the time in the real world. Somehow when MS does it, they are always evil and looking for world domination.

Anyway, not that I really want them to buy Logitech. I never understood why they got out of this market anyway, they made some decent stuff. Still have a 12 year old Sidewinder lying around here. I hardly use it anymore these days, but it's still in great shape.

Besides the obvious new releases for LFS I am really looking forward to Alan Wake, which seems totally my cup of tea. It will probably be a long time before it's released though and it has become a Vista only release, which sucks as I have no plans whatsoever to switch to Vista.

Quote from garph :DDR3 is just very expensive at the moment, my motherboard has DDR2 and DDR3 support, when the price comes down (a lot) I'll get some.

I see, well it seems like a good idea to have DDR3 support and the P5KC is just a bit higher price with DDR3 support so I'll probably go for that.

I have a sata Maxtor drive that I've had for years and it's in perfect working order, never had any problems at all. I've heard nightmare stoires about Western Digital drives (which I have now, it's great) just goes to show that it really doesn't matter which one you get. Some people will swear they are great and others that they are rubbish.

I know what you mean about people having different experiences with certain brands, yet it still makes me a bit reluctant. The biggest difference I noticed when going from Maxtor to WD though was that the WD was much less noisy. Although in all fairness it was a long time ago,so it could be totally different now.

Quote from csurdongulos :regarding the CPU: you would benefit from the higher frequency, q6600 is supposed to have more cache, doesn't it? I am not sure on that one.

Yes you're right, the quad has a bigger cache, I misread

Quote :
but it is not yet worth purchasing a quad core, no games take advantage of it, especially not LFS. For the OS, dual core is enough.

That's my general feeling about it yes. If in the future quad really becomes a necessity I can always upgrade. I don't think I need it at the moment. Like I said, I'm not really a hardcore gamer.

Quote :
Regarding GFX cards. Nvidia are ahead with their 8800 series, but ATI are somewhat cheaper with the 3850-70 cards, and the factory cooling is also better/quieter. For LFS in that resolution a 3850 with 256 ram is plenty enough, but you might want to get one with 512, just for the sake of it, not much difference in price, but could come in handy for the future.

Good to know about the cooling, I'm leaning towards the 3850 at the moment.

About the Maxtor/Seagate thing, I remember that the Maxtor's I had were one of the last models before they were bought by Seagate (DX40 I believe they were called). afaik after that they basically just became rebranded Seagates. But I could be wrong.

Thank you all for your input

I forgot to mention two things:
- I can get another 1GB from a friend for free so I only need 1GB extra.
- Regarding the videocard, I have a widescreen TFT and I'd like to play LFS at least on 1440*900 with AA and medium to high detail.

As for the hard drive. Well, I don't mind getting something other than WD. I have had a Seagate, a Hitachi and 2 Maxtor's in the past. I'm not going anywhere near Maxtor anymore as 1 died within a year and the other one in 6 months.
I have had 3 WD's of which 2 are in my current PC both of them running with 0 problems now for about 5 years or so. I don't use the third anymore but it was working fine when I replaced it, just needed a bigger one. So although it's no guarantee I have had nothing but good experience with WD.

@csurdongulos: yes, I am in doubt about the quad core and I'm considering the E6850 as well.
Would I benefit more from the E6850 than the Q6600 because of the bigger cache?
Thanks for the info about the PSU, will definitely consider that one

@srdsprinter: I'm planning to build my new system somewhere in February so I'll keep an eye on the E8400, thanks

@Jakg: I don't know about the 8800GT. I'm sure it's a great card and I can afford it but I have to set boundaries for myself otherwise I know I'll let it go out of hand The 3850 seems like a good alternative

So, what's the situation with graphics cards atm? Are nVidia and ATI roughly on the same level? I've used nVidia the most, my latest experience with ATI wasn't too great.

@Jertje, thanks for the links, looks interesting. I haven't made my mind up yet about where I'll buy it, I'm just using alternate to browse since they have a pretty large catalog.

@James12s: Yeah I guess the P5KC would be a better choice. You mean because of the DDR3 support right?
How common is DDR3 anyway atm? Is DDR2 going to phase out any time soon?

Thanks again
