Quote from Shadowww :Wine is Open Source, isn't it possible to rebuild it on PS3?

As I said, differing architectures. Wine Is Not an Emulator. It merely translates system calls. So no, it wouldn't work

WINE: Different architecture (PPC vs x86) The code simply won't run.
Emulators: Simply too slow to emulate both a processor and a 3D card (in fact, 3D acceleration hasn't even been started in emulators). Maybe if someone works out how to use all the cores of the Cell on the PS3 then it would be possible. The emulation would have to be *really* good, however.

Quote from dadge :ok, i have just popped on to see what pinky and the brain have been up to. now i'm running slightly late for work so i will keep it short.
george, what makes you think i was talking about bus width and not bit rate? after all, both are relevent to this thread but yet you insist i have gotten my words mixed up. on what post did i mention bus width?
Do you understand the importance of reading things correctly and understanding them before you comment on it?

bit rate: The number of bits transmitted per unit of time. (the one i was talking about). i even googled it just to make sure i was correct. here's what google says "measurement unit that quantifies the flow of bits per second."
bus width:The number of bits which are carried simultaneously by a bus. 16 for the ISA bus and 32 or 64 for the PCI bus.(the one you insist i am talking about)
and incase you still have not got it.
I was actually talking about bitrates.

No, you weren't. You were quoting a bus width (that is, a number of bits with no time unit). In terms of graphics card and memory bit rate is not a valid phrase for anything. You're looking for "bandwidth". But again, in this case you were referring to a bus width (ie 256, 512 bit). Now, can we all just STFU about this topic and help the OP?

EDIT: I see you've realised you were wrong and edited your post. Nice

Btw who was the renault that spun was it Alonso or Piquet?

Meh SC in lap 1 surprise surprise. Hamilton handled the pressure well 'nuff in T1 since he didn't dive bomb or die I guess. Looking good for him for now heh.

It was Piquet. Alonso's in 6th at the moment.

Quote from Becky Rose :aha, opting out of real life for a few years. I never did that myself, although I did skip reality (though I had to hold a job down to afford all the drugs). It still amases me where students get the cash for their hedonistic lifestyle from. I hope you have a wild time.

There'll be no wild time here - spent a good chunk of student loans on a new PC (I DID need it...), so now can't really afford the lifestyle of the nutter! It's good so far, although boring - all the stuff we're doing so far is stuff I already know!

Oh I can't complain! Moved over to Hull to start Uni, got free of parents at last () All is good over here!

As for lerts, despite my post I think we should all just ignore his threads. He'll eventually get bored and move on.

By the way, what's with the mini-links, such as http://is.gd/EUN. Some sort of network block bypass?

is.gd is a URL shortening service, nothing more, it just forwards to the actual URL. </offtopic>

Anyway, anyone I know well enough to see my Facebook gets added on there. Anyone else gets my Twitter account (or Plurk, depending on which they use) - they use my Second Life name, so noone really finds out too much about me from them.

Quote from george_tsiros :ok, get the tech, give him money...

and what will you get? I mean, for the money that you will give him?

how about... instead of giving money to overclock an already fast enough cpu... you use the extra money to get a faster graphics card, which is just what your machine needs...

I agree. A nice 4850 wouldn't do any harm at all. In fact, it'd do all manner of good. I say get one.

You said yourself you're not experienced at all with computer hardware. If I were you I wouldn't overclock at all - you're liable to do damage to your hardware if you try and push it too far. It's fine as it is

Quote from Shadowww :Pentium IV 3.2 ghz will get better framerates than this.
Know why? Because LFS don't support multi-cores.

No it won't. The P4 was extremely badly designed - Netburst was a failure for Intel. A 2.4GHz Q6600 is (even in single threaded apps) faster than a 3.2GHz P4, simply because of architectural superiority. Core 2 didn't just multiply the number of cores, you know

EDIT: Tom's Hardware chart seems to back me up (UT2004 is single threaded, too)

Quote from S14 DRIFT :I really have no idea what people's problems with wireless are. I've had no issues apart from occasional drops of signal, which are often days apart and last for ~0.5 second so nothing's really affected.

I'm sure having 3347329 systems to go through your interweb is getting held back somewhere. My money's still on the powerline. Ours was fine until one day, as well.

My problems with wireless: I live in a house with thick walls, 2 floors up. Wireless has no chance. Fortunately every room's got an ethernet jack. Of course I don't use powerline, but the point still stands about wireless.
Also, when I had wireless at the old house (in Leeds) I kept getting dropouts, packet loss etc. Wireless (for me, at least) isn't fit for purpose. My parents have since replaced it with a wired network and seen their internet speed go way up.

Quote from george_tsiros :the people spending money on quadcores... why... why... why...

Personally I do a lot of compiling - the more raw CPU power I can get the better. (I can very easily multi-thread the compile jobs, it's just an option in /etc/makepkg.conf [Arch Linux])
