Yeh, i got the pole sitter right..

But i've got Kimi for the win

I've only had a quick look at everyones team, but i can't see anyone with exactly the same line-up, which is a good thing, should make it very interesting.

It's gonna be odd watching the race hoping my favourite drivers/cars stuff it into the wall. Any Aussies out there fancy nipping down to the track and undoing one of Davidsons wheel nuts ? And i really wanted Glock to do well, but thanks to his stupid penalty has been pushed back on the grid (which is actually good for me, as i've got him down for not beating Trulli) And here's hoping Alonso doesn't get in the top 6...

Quote from Lateralus :IMO they should turn Q3 into a low-fuel, one-lap shootout in reverse order, i.e. the driver who qualified tenth (just making the cut) in Q2 would go out last in Q3 when the track is generally at its best and fastest. The man who was fastest in Q2 would go out first when the track is slower, so it would encourage the fastest cars to lap closer the cutoff point rather than going as fast as possible. This seems like it would tighten Q2 and Q3 times significantly and make it easier for midfield teams to upset the front-runners.

Interesting idea...

It would probably work in the lower formulee or WTTC or BTTC etc, but i don't think F1 should go down that route. F1 has always been and should always remain, the fastest cars wins, It'd be odd seeing the fastest driver/car combo driving artificially slow in order to get a good starting slot just for qualifying. If F1 ever went down the Mickey Mouse route in order to pander to the viewers then it'd loose all credibility in my eyes. You might as well do away with qualifying all together and have the grid decided by a lottery draw, or a viewers phone vote or something.

Quote from Lateralus :Get rid of having to carry race fuel into Q3 - just put in enough to do an outlap, a hotlap and and an in-lap. Afterwards all teams can put in whatever fuel they like for the race.

I certainly agree with low fuel/fastest possible lap time in Q3, but i don't think allowing the teams to fuel up to whatever level for the race is such a good idea. Imagine what would happen at the street circuits Monaco, Valencia, Singapore. Pole sitter would be filled to the brim, lapping really slowly and no one could pass him (bit like the good old days).

That's not a nice thing to hear.

Can't say i know who the person is, but i hope it's not too serious and she's back to full health asap.

Nah, i'd say the teams have to state their intended race fuel level before the start of Qualy, then let the drivers go out in the final session on low fuel so we can see who really is the quickest.

Quote from Luke.S :And of course you can organise prizes yourself with your friends.

Apparently the winner gets The Norways, (providing Hypers invasions plans are going well)

On a personal note, if i win could i swap it for Liechtenstein ?. I think Norway will be a real pain in the arse to keep clean, and The Stein has a much smaller garden, and nicer neighbours, and a better dental programme...

Really enjoyed that...

Shame about Kimi though, but rather chuffed Alonso didn't make it into the top ten

It looks like Kubica was running light, but i think he's still got a chance of a podium.

And man these cars look fun to drive. Should be a cracking season.

But, this running the last section of the Qualy with race fuel is stupid, just imagine the problems it's gonna cause at Monaco..

Quote from JTbo :If I need to attach something to wall with nail, I will get hammer, but if I need to cut down a tree, I get a chainsaw.

Who gets what I'm after here?

Buy a Volvo ?

On topic-ish

Back in the 90's i really wanted a little open topped sportscar so i test drove an MX5, a Triumph Spitfire and an MGB. And to be honest, i loved'em. All great fun (even on or below the speed limits), and just as quick in the real world as almost any high powered car you can think of. And driving with the roof down is just so much more thrilling than a tintop, kinda puts you back in touch with what motoring should be.

Unfortunately, at the time i lived in a really rough part of town, so most insurance companies just laughed at me and bumped up the quotes to ridiculous levels.

And perhaps more importantly i came to the conclusion that they were all just a bit too gay for my liking. So, i got married and bought a Volvo instead.

But now i wish i had bought a convertible, and if finances allow i would do it today. Only this time i think i'd get a TR6, or a Stag, or something, yunno, something that only REAL men can drive

Quote from Racer X NZ :It's a BBC doco so has anyone in Britain seen it ?

It was shown here over a year ago, maybe 2 or 3yrs back ? can't quite remember. So i'm surprised it's taken this long to filter out to the rest of the world.

To be honest it didn't really say anything that we didn't know already. But i'm sure there will be a torrent available somewhere if you really want to see it. If i remember correctly it was a short series of 3 or 4 episodes.

I'll apologise in advance for being typically English so therefore i don't speak a word of German.

But where there any quotes from the passengers on that forum ? It'd be interesting to hear what they had to say (i'm sure if i was on the plane i could think of a few quality Ye Olde English phrases to pass on to the pilot)

Well, it's been over 20yrs since i studied economics at school, so everything that follows may be complete nonsense, but i'll have a go.

I believe it's based on the premise that one must speculate to accumulate.

From the Governments point of view that means it has to try to stir the private sector into positive action in the hope that it results in both employment and spending within it's nation which in turn results in more revenue from taxes.

As an example, in the the UK in the 1980's the Government invested heavily in the infrastructure of deprived areas of the country, then gave huge tax breaks to large multinational companies (mostly Japanese may i add) in the hope some would take the bait and build factories in these areas (an example of this is John Delorean building his factory in Belfast, although that soon went tits up :schwitz Anyway, many foreign companies did take the bait, which resulted in increased employment in those areas, which in turn resulted in increased spending by those newly employed individuals, which in turn resulted in more revenue (income for the government) through income tax and vat etc.

So, as a result those particular areas of the country now had more spending power due to lower unemployment, which lead to more shops/leisure/entertainment outlets etc, being located there, which also lead to greater revenue through taxes for the government.

An odd fact, (although nothing to do with the topic) but, in the UK the largest retail outlets and the highest proportion of shops per person, are all in areas that have a history of high unemployment and poor health. Essentially the working classes like to spend their money, while the middle classes like to save their money. In a nutshell (and perhaps bizarrely), a nation that saves it's money has an unhealthy economy, but a nation that spends it's money has a healthy economy

Simply put, it's like an economic snowball that the government/state throws from the top of a large hill which (hopefully) gets bigger and bigger as it rolls down the hill, from which the state can then take their share.

Hopefully someone else will come along and explain it a bit better, but, that's about the best explanation i can come up with after all these years, and my memory's not all that good these days

quick edit: Lol 3 people posted at exactly the same time...and guess who came last..

It may sound unlikely but i can assure you the first time i saw it on BBC it was in black and white. The second time i saw it, it was in colour and i actually thought they had colourised it, and it wasn't nearly as good.

Maybe it was 'just an artistic thing' but honestly, it really does work better in B&W, go try it, then tell me what you think.

Obviously looking at those links it was filmed in colour i'm not going to argue with you on that, but i can assure you it has been screened here in the UK in B&W. I even think a few 'Art House' movie theatres have shown it in B&W, including my local.

Quote from deggis :Black & white version? I know about the couple of different cuts (original tv series -> theatherical version -> director's cut -> and apparently the latest "original uncut" version) but I've only seen the director's cut. But B&W? Someone explain this to me. I'm confused

It's been on British Tv quite a few times over the last 20yrs or so. Sometimes it was in black and white, sometimes in colour, sometimes in series format, sometimes the whole film in one go, but thankfully always in German with English subtitles.

I just assumed the colour/B&W were different versions, but maybe the chaps at the BBC just turned a few knobs and dials and made it B&W.

Honestly it's far far better in B&W. As Eggzotic said above it really brings in the claustrophobia, hardens the actors faces and adds even more tension. And i guess it helps that most of us think of WW2 as a black and white war (so to speak )

Try renting it and fade the colour out of your TV, it'll make the film so much better.

Interestingly, the last time i watched it 5 or 6yrs ago, i had a good friend of mine there, who happens to be a German. He spent the first half of the film laughing at the posh German accents, and the second half of the film (after the first merchant ship was sunk) incessantly apologising for his nations role during the War...

Whichever way you see it, it's a damn good film, it's just better in black and white, that's all
