Quote from Crashgate3 :That's not a Mosquito

Not sure what it is actually, looks maybe like some kind of Beaufighter variant?

EDIT:

Actually looking at the nose and tail, it *is* a mosquito  one with unusual radial engines instead of the Merlins they normally have.

All the usual suspects as mentioned above, the Spitfire, B17, Vulcan etc.

Some that haven't been mentioned; Tornado GR 1,2,3,4 (probably my fave fighter jet). My favourite GA aircraft, Beechcraft Baron, Cessna Skymaster and the cute little Piper Tomahawk. My fave stunt plane has to be the Pitts Special. My favourite helicopter would be the Westland Lynx, and although i'm not a huge fan of passenger aircraft, no poll would be complete without a vote for Le Concorde.

Yeah, so i'm up at the crack of dawn to watch the tennis and i'm not fully awake yet, but, i genuinly can't tell if that's a subtle jibe or you honestly think one of them was a Ferrari ?

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt on that one, but for the record, we have - from left to right-
Maserati 3500 Vignale Spider
Maserati Sebring (series 1)
Maserati Khamsin
Maserati Merak
Maserati Quattroporte

edit :- see, i told you i wasn't fully awake, i err, only just noticed the testarossa in the Khamsin pic, oopsy what a ****ing idiot

In a word, usability. It looks so user friendly which means it'll sell by the bucket load. The google maps and ibook function alone sell it to me. The only revervations i have are the battery life (yeah 10hrs, right) and that's a really big uncovered (and expensive) screen, i'd be constantly worried about scratching it. And if you went for the 3g version you'll look such a numb nuts holding that thing up to your ear. Dom Joly eat yer heart out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-I_MJFlZbs

A friend has a Vodafone dongle at (i think) 1.5 meg, which is fine if you want to do all your interneting at 3 oclock in the morning. But if you'd rather not be online with perverts and the unemployed, then you're looking at speeds not much better than dial up (at least that's the impression i get). Plus he's got a pretty stingy download limit (not entirely sure what it is, but i'm guessing about 3gig)

Having said that, if you're in range of free wifi, then bob's yer uncle fannies yer etc etc. BT seem pretty keen to push the free wifi thing i.e asking people to open up a portion of their connection to BTFon (i think it's called). It's what i've done with mine, and it doesn't appear to affect my paid for connection speed, and the free wifi bit's not that slow either.

You may have guessed that i'm not terrible knowledgable about this sort of stuff, but, basically, an internet dongle seems to be something to be used in emergencies or a last resort type of thing, and not as a replacement for home/landline internet connection. (again. i'd say that's the impression i get)

N.B. remember chaps that this is the UK we're talking about here, you Europeans are streets ahead of us when it comes to broadband speeds.

Nah, Dundrod is quite a slow track (they used to race cars there back in the 50's don't'cha'know)

Hows about wheel to wheel action at 195 down little country lanes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bibjoepk8DQ at the NorthWest 200. Or do a search for the Irish road racing championships

Mind you, if anyone can find a high quality vid of a full bore lap of the IOM TT, then please feel free to post it and lets educate these youngsters on what real bravery, talent, and more than a touch of insanity is.

Quote from Dajmin :Everyone in my band got an iPhone after trying somebody else's

To the OP, that there is the key to solving your dilemma. Go try em, before you buy em !

I recently switched from using a smartphone to an iPhone, and to be honest, i don't think i'll be changing back anytime soon. Granted there's nothing an iPhone can do that smartphones haven't been able to do for the last few years, but, it's the way the iPhone does it that sets it apart. If a lump of plastic crammed full of electronics and witchcraft can ever be called "moreish" then the iPhone has to be at the top of the tree. It's so silky smooth in its operation and so so easy to use, any idiot can pick it up and master it within minutes (me for instance), yet, with over 100,000 apps you will never ever get board. I can't put mine down, i'm smitten.

I got the smartphone originally because it had all the MS office bits and pieces included, but, when it came to actually using them, it was a complete pain in the arse, infact these things are next to useless. Try writing a document with the stylus on that stupid little WinMo pop-up keypad, or even worse, try doing it with the pull-out keyboard that's specifically designed to be utterly impossible for anyone with adult sized thumbs to use. So all you end up using it for is to store documents/spreadsheets etc, and any phone can do that. If you really want to use it as a mobile office, buy a laptop.

And if you want to take decent quality photos ? as other have said, buy a real camera.

At the end of the day, we all have different needs from a phone, and we'll all use it for different purposes, so, as i said above, go try as many as you can before buying one. Chances are you'll never use or never need 80% of the stuff that comes packaged with a smartphone. That probably applies to the iPhone too (although that figure is probably a lot less, well, for me anyway)

Quote from Jakg :MP means nothing, WiFi yes, SatNav you have to pay for - however I've yet to see ANY SatNav software on a phone thats remotely decent.

I've yet to see any standalone dedicated satnav pna (?) that you could call decent either. Fact is, there's no such thing as a perfect satnav device. I've used pna's from Tom Tom and Garmin, smartphone software from Tom Tom and Navigon (7) and CoPilot on the iPhone, and all of them are flawed in one way or another. Some are unbelievably stupid, some are infuriatingly complicated to set up, some are infuriatingly incomplete, and others are downright dangerous. Thing is, a satnav should only ever be used as a navigational aid to get you to where you wanna go, never a , set-in-stone, she-who-must-be-obeyed matron type, navigation dominatrix.

Aparently there's an ongoing study at the moment looking into how blindly following satnav instructions effect drivers concentration and awareness, and also how many accidents and cases of bad/dangerous driving is caused by late/faulty or inaccurite directions. Should make very very interesting reading.

Then again, any electronic satnav is at least 10,000% better than the wife. No word of a lie this, but, a few years back i drove from Newcastle to Shropshire (a journey of about 5hr). The missus sat in the passenger seat with the map book (no satnav in those days) on her lap for the entire journey. Not only was it upside down thoughout, but it was permanently opened on the page that only showed Newcastle and the surrounding area. Don't think she never looked at it either. On several occasions i would ask "which way babe", she'd look at the map and say "uhmm, i think it's left here" by which time i'd found a roadsign and just guessed. Even when we reached Shrewsbury (our destination) she was still looking at an upside down map of Newcastle and giving directions. Mind you, she does have a far far sexier voice than any satnav woman has (really), much nicer arse too

Anyway, that turned out to be a much much longer post than i had originally planned, and it's getting late, so i'm gonna go sit in a darkened corner somewhere and get very very drunk. Happy New Year everyone (not that i really give a shit about any of you, but, i guess it's the seasons greetings, so, ermm, accept it)

Quote from Jakg :GTA4 for a fiver? Why not.

125 KB/s, thats why not...

I clicked the download button a few mins before i went to bed last night and it set off at a very health 800-odd kbs. By the morning it was all fully installed and ready to go. The living room was noticibly warmer too.

On a related note, what's up with the camera movement when driving ? it seems reluctant to follow the car when you go round corners....the amount of people i've run over is quite sickening...oh wait, that's a good thing

Quote from tristancliffe :Blah blah

Just had a courtesy call from O2 to ask how i was doing and if i wanted to buy some concert tickets for Leona Lewis or someone . So i asked about the battery thing and they suggested it needs to go through a fully cycle 2 or 3 times before it settles down and 'gaves all it's strength'. I'll try it and see how it goes. Although i'll admit i'm pretty much smitten by this thing, and i have been using it a hell of a lot, much more than my home PC if truth be told.

I also asked about the "unlimited/fair use" deal, "No sir, nothing to worry about, there's no download limits at all, you just carry on doing whatever it is you're doing. Mind you, if you do download too much stuff, we'll charge you huge amounts of money, then cut you off" (sort of) What they actually said was, before it reaches that stage they'll send a text and maybe even give you a call just to tell you to ease off a bit. So perhaps there's nothing to worry about.

I'm all for the useless but highly geeky apps. I'm a bit of a map and navigation buff and Motion X GPS Lte delivers in spades. I'm not entirely sure what it is/what it does/how to work it, but it's ace nonetheless. Also SOS Torch is cool if you wanna a) blind yourself. b) give yourself a headache. c) irritate the crap out of the nextdoor neighbours dog.

Just bumping this thread to ask a few questions, and it saves me opening up a new topic.

So, the iphone battery life, is it really that bad ?, or have i just been unlucky and installed a load of apps that use power like it's going out of fashion ?. I haven't done any 'scientific' type tests or anything, but, i'm having to charge this thing twice a day. Is that normal ?
I have come from a PDA with a hugely chunky extended battery pack, so maybe i've been spoilt, but, this eee-phone thing does seem to need a hell of a lot of juice !. So much so, i've been looking at a couple of cases with an extended battery charger built in. I've been looking at these two http://www.logic3.com/details/?prod=615 and http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/iph ... g-leather-case-p18580.htm Anyone had any experience with these or something similar ?

Secondly, Data usage. Anyone hit the buffer of this "unlimited download/fair use" O2 tariff ?. I'll admit to being a touch paranoid here, but i'm kinda scared of running up a huge data bill, so i've been very very careful about my data consumption (always use my home wifi network when in the house, and i make sure i don't spend hours searching for porn on the web when sitting on the bus...err i mean, checking the LFS forums :shy Yet, my data usage seems to have added a few extra Mb's each time i turn the thing on...Is this normal ?
My guess is, so many of my apps asks "do you want to use your current location" I always say yes. So does that mean it's running off to the worldwideweb of lies to ask where i live every time i open up a programme ?

And thirdly, O2's internet tethering/add-on/nut and bolt thingy - thing. Anyone tried it ? Value for money ? Reasonable download speeds ? Reliable conection ? or a waste of time and a complete rip-off ?

Any help/advice would be good.

Anyway, to continue with the theme of this long forgotten thread, my apps :-

App Box Lite...............(Very very useful set of utilities all in one neat little package, it's free too, which always helps)
CallSaver and 0870......(Avoid paying for those costly 08 premium rate numbers that arn't included in your free minutes)
Google Mobile App.......(Internet search engine that you speak too, tell it what you want, and it simply finds it, works everytime, even if you have a northern accent)
Copilot Live 8..............(No Pink Floyd unfortunately, and it's not quite as polished as Tom Tom or Navigon 7, but, at 26 quid, you can't really grumble (it gets you to where you wanna go, eventually)
Around Me..................(I was surprised by the lack of built-in searchable POI's in google maps, so i installed this, and now i can easily and quickly search for things that i already know are there, (saves having to look out the window i guess))
Active Sonar...............(Learn how to become a bat, only without the wings and furry ears. No, really, go get it, you'll see exactly what i mean )
iSeismo......................(Learn how much of a thud you make walking into walls when your trying to be a bat)

Games; not really found many games that have been able to hold my attention longer than ten mins or so, although Monopoly, Pocket God, Labyrinth 3D and Paper Toss arn't so bad.

Hmmm, at first i thought he was driving into an underground carpark. Then i thought he was driving in a football stadium. Then i thought he was driving a go-kart track.

Impressive facilities, not such a great track (at first view). No obvious overtaking opportunites, no really demanding corners, it's all stop and go driving. It might be different at full tilt in an F1 car ? but, it doesn't stir my little motorsport soul.

Quote from mythdat :Death to the myth that Alonso and Hamilton don't like eachother!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYq4TUCtNfo

Apparently they did have a bit of a spat a couple of years ago when everything was kicking off, but have since made up. Apparently they have a heck of a lot of respect for one anothers driving talent. Alonso's main beef was with the team, or in other words, with Ron Dennis, and now he's out of the picture everythings calmed down between them.

On a personal note, i've been very very critical of Alonso in these forums over the years. But, recently i've softened towards him, he seems to have matured a lot since he left Mclaren. Let's just hope he doesn't start throwing the toys outta the pram if/when Massa starts beating him in the Ferrari.
