Been listening to the new album by U2 - No Line On The Horizon, for the last few days.
Although i've read a lot of negative comments about it, i think it's rather good, and it definitely gets better the more plays you give it. It's definitely not 'fast food pop'. And anyway, isn't the best music always something that challenges convention and expectation ?
Huh ? Lock On ?....so real that you can crash into the ground at several hundred mile an hour, rip both wings off and carry on as though nothing had happened http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABHDGUZyWkE
Before i left, i watched that vid in the other thread so i knew who to look for. So i've spent the last 3 hours searching every soup kitchen, YMCA and gay club in the town. And there you were, sitting at home, lubeing your traps
But at least we know where you live now.....just be careful opening your mail over the next few days.....that's all i'm gonna say
Nah, Pete Shelley's voice really gets under my skin, really annoying and whiney.
It's ok for a one off novelty record like Jilted John, but for a serious punk god to sound like he's just trapped his nads in a door, it's not right, know what i mean ?
Basically the artistry in punk 'singing' is to shout, in the most angry and menacing way. But when Shelley does it he sounds no more menacing than a big girls blouse. So how are a group of disaffected teenagers looking for a rolemodel supposed to take that seriously ? (Apparently Boy George was a big Buzzcocks fan...)
Huh ! wonder how many people in this thread were even alive in 1976.
And how come no-one's mentioned the originals, the Godfathers of Punk, Iggy and the Stooges, or even their bastard love children The New York Dolls.
For what it's worth, i don't think any 70's British Punk band could hold a light to The Damned - before they went all pop-shitty-tastic -. Generation X had a couple of decent albums, the Clash had some decent tunes too, i always thought the Buzzcocks where shite, and the Pistols was more of a money making venture for Malcolm Mclaren than a real band, more hype than talent, but isn't that the music biz in a nut shell....
Yep, it's definitely 8.50, i guess this must be an MSI only version . But i suppose the driver on the ATI site should be the better and newest one. will try it.
The Express Gate thing is pretty good tbh, apart from the no sound. You can get online within 10sec's of turning the PC on. And because it doesn't go through the full boot up sequence in theory it's using less power to run the thing and on my PC is very very quiet. The only drawback is you can't access the HDD, so you can only download to a USB device. And it obviously doesn't load the GFX card so stuff like Google Earth is a bit laggy. Youtube's fine though, except for the no sound bit
Just bumping this thread, coz, i've just got myself the MSI version of the 4850, and i'm a bit confused.
The driver/catalyst thing on the cd that came with the card is version 8.50, yet the latest version on that site is 8.12, so, which is the best ?
And just for the record, mines running at about 66-67 degrees C at idle, and i thought that was hot, but if some are running over 80
Have to say, it's early days, but i'm not entirely sure if this card really is worth all the hype. I didn't notice any significant improvement in X-Plane, and Arma's still not playable on max settings (it will run at max settings, but the fps's are too low to be useful) Not had the time to try FSX yet though, so perhaps time will tell. But, i've come from an Nvidia 6800GS, so i would have thought i'd get a huge performance boost, but no...
And while i'm here, maybe i could ask some more questions ?
I also bought an Asus P5QL motherboard with this Express Gate/Splashtop app. And it's a pretty nifty little thing, but, i can't get the audio working (only in the Express Gate though, it's fine in the OS) I've looked at the support pages of Asus, but, they're useless to be honest, and couldn't find any help there. I did send them an email, but they ain't hurrying to reply.
So, any help from you guys would be appreciated.
p.s Linux seems to really hate this MB/Vid card combo, it doesn't recognise the audio or ethernet port
I have the Asrock 4core dual vsta. It does have both pci-e and agp slots, and you can use them at the same time, i've done it myself.
But..
I wouldn't recommend it.
Firstly, the pci-e slot is only a x4, so you're losing performance from the get go.
Secondly, the slots are far too close to each other. The fan of the agp card is almost touching the back of the pci-e card, so the heat from the back of the pci-e goes straight into the fan of the agp, and subsequently gets very very hot very very quickly.
Thirdly, I've only tried it with 2 Nvidia cards using the same drivers. I doubt it would work with ATI and Nvidia at the same time.
Forthly, the Asrock is pretty crap tbh. It's good if you want to upgrade bit by bit from old technology to new (i.e ddr1 - ddr2, ide -sata, agp - pcie) but after that, it's a very mediocre board.
Not too much of a mention of standardised parts except radio and telemetry, so they're nothing to get worried about, although the chassis rules are a bit vague.
I've never been a fan of this engine lasting for "X" amount of races, but while it's here they may as well go the whole hog and say the engine has to last a full season.
Ban on refueling, tyre warmers and wind tunnel size, all V good
Possible reduction in race distance or duration (proposal to follow market research). V V bad. Proposal to follow market research eh ! Hmmm not happy about that one.
As for the traffic, i didn't realise there was an option for it. Although there are a few freeware apps that put traffic into the game they seem a bit of a pain in the arse to set up, so i havn't really bothered.
If you're have FPS issues try G2XPL. It's best if you turn off all the scenery (i.e forests and buildings and stuff) and whack up the airport objects and overall graphics settings to max. I've gone from low 20's with the stock X-Plane settings to mid 60's with the G2XPL google app settings
The thing that's really surprised me most with X-Plane is, it's actually not quite as configurable as FSX. Multi-monitor support is a real pain to sort out and it could really do with an FSUIPC app to help with setting up and changing all the key macro's. It's good if you want to configure lots of hardware with real buttons and dials and things, but this TouchBuddy thing is all virtual hardware, and you have to really dig around the guts of X-Plane and play around with loads of config files and soforth to get it to do what you want (and i havn't even started trying to get any data from the game itself yet) confusing.
Also the way X-Plane graphically simulates rain and snow could be better, although the real world weather function is spot on, and how it reacts with the planes flight dynamics is fantastic. But, I was out flying over the Lake District in the UK the other day and noticed that the screen suddenly got dark and really grainy. My first thought was, oh bollocks, me graphics cards on the the way out. It wasn't until i looked out the side window i realised it was actually raining The planes could do with a windscreen me thinks.
Yes, yes it does, although i'm yet to see another traffic in the same bit of sky as me so i can't really voucher for it's realism. Although the talk in the forums suggest it's pretty much spot on. Not sure if it's coded into online play though ?
Although X-Plane does have a few drawbacks, I'm loving it too.
Been playing around with the freeware G2XPL addon recently, and it's fantastic. If you don't know, it's a tileproxy type app, but because the land mapping is so much better in X-Plane than FSX it's just about as real as it gets., and i'm yet to find a runway that's misaligned with the google earth tiles.
I've also been playing around with a little program called TouchBuddy...yeah, i know . But it's an absolute treat, i can even get it to work on an old Ipaq i had lying around. I've not yet finished my profile (kinda getting bogged down by VB6 programming issues) but i should reach a point where i won't need to use the keyboard at all.
I have to say i'm not overly impressed with the quality of the freeware aircraft, and i havn't really looked at the freeware scenery. But i did buy a little Piper Commanche from Heinz Dzuirowitz, and it's a beaut. One of the best planes i've ever flown in any sim, ever, and it's only a tenner.
All in all, i have to say there are some things FSX does so much better than X-Plane, but, the overall flying experience is light years behind that of X-Plane. It's just a real shame non of the airports have any buildings. It always seems a bit of an anti-climax when you land and there's not even so much as a hanger at some of the biggest airports in the world. Although the runway lighting is something else, utterly fantastic.
