That's the interesting point about the effects of mind altering drugs. Do they cause mental illness, or simply unlock it ?
I've know hundreds of druggies in my time, some are perfectly normal rational people, some have had mental health problems only when they've been taking the drugs, some have had problems that have persisted even when they quit the drug, and some have died of overdose's. Some have ended up being sectioned just from smoking dope (resin) and one guy i knew took acid and somehow managed to convince himself he couldn't bend his left knee. There was nothing physically wrong with his left knee, but it would take days after he had dropped a couple of tabs of acid for his brain to convince him he was ok . Then come the weekend, he'd go through the whole process again. And he had a full time job too. Another friend of mine was a very nice, pleasant, bright, middle class girl with a good education and a very supportive and well respected family. She met a guy (a heroin addict), fell in love, got married, had a couple of kids, became a junkie and was found dead, all alone in a train station a couple of years later. It was so sad to see someone with so many prospects and potential literally fall apart infront of your eyes. But she wouldn't accept any help from anyone. "She knew best, it was her life, and no one was going to take her heroine away from her, or tell her what to do"...sad, so sad.
I guess the moral of the story is a bit like that Forest Gump quote "Life's like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get". You never really know how drugs are gonna effect you in the short and long term until you actually try them. You might get lucky and have no adverse effects at all, or you may turn into a nutcase or even drop dead on you first go. Question is, is it worth the risk ?
If you have an addictive personality then the chances are once you try a drug and like it, then you'll become hooked, and once you're hooked who knows where it might lead.
For me, i stopped taking illegal drugs about 15yrs ago and the only ill effect i have noticed is a really wierd memory. I can barely tell you what i did yesterday and i havn't the faintest idea what my own telephone number is, but i can remember how tall my first girlfriend was and the registration plate of my old geography teacher's car, i'm useless with name's but i never ever forget a face, even if it was someone i met only once on a bus back in 1972.
As for the legalisation of drugs i've got mixed emotions about it tbh. Perhaps in certain circumstances like pain relief for MS sufferers it's ok, but i wouldn't fancy getting on a plane or a train with the thought the pilots/drivers might be sitting up front legally puffing on a huge reefer.
There was a famous old quote from Winston Churchill along the lines of " If as a young man i don't vote socialist then i have no heart, but if as an older man i don't vote conservative then i have no brains".
Granted the political divide has changed a lot since then, but the sentiment still rings true.
Only going by that vid, i'd say, he couldn't have done much about it once he lost the back end.
I can understand why you'd be a bit miffed, but, to play the devils advocate, i suppose you can say perhaps you should have seen him spinning and eased off the gas. But that's an unfair statement without seeing any in-car footage or any telemetry.
If this was on "The Blame Game" i'd say, racing incident. Unfortunate, but no-ones fault, and nothing malicious. Be happy, it's nearly Christmas ...oh shit, it's nearly Christmas
I'm looking at Scan's Today screen right now, but i can't see any deals on gfx cards, and i don't really want a luminous keyboard, even if it is only a tenna..
ANd how much of a difference does the PSU make ? i've never had any problems with my little-un
Ermmm could you translate that into English for me please. I understand and like the £30 bit, but what is a 4850 and is it any good ?
I don't wanna hijack this guys thread,
but,
I'm looking to upgrade soon, maybe in the new year sales, and not sure what would be the best way to go.
Currently running:-
Asrock 4 core dual mb
Intel E6300
Nvidia 6800gs XXX
2Gb DDR400 (something or other) RAM
And a few other bits that make lots or whirring noises, flash lights and generally bump up my electricity bill.
Budget £200-£300
I'm not having any problems playing the stuff i play at the moment, but it would be nice to see X-Plane and maybe FSX at full settings, + Arma 2 and Operation Flashpoint 2 are due sometime next year so maybe a bit of future proofing is needed.
To the OP, sorry to bust into your thread like this. So if you want i can delete this post and start my own. Just say the word
Probably wouldn't even need that much. In situations like this for legal reasons the buyout tends to be for a nominal amount, usually £1. But then you're buying all the companies debts and a huge salary bill. And i'd guess part of the deal would be to keep the company solvent, the workforce intact and take part in the championship for at least a year or two.
Anyone gonna step up ? Tristan, you're probably rich enough

While it is sad to see yet another team leave F1, in the present financial climate it was bound to happen sooner or later. And i'd expect to see a few more go in the next year or so if things don't improve. I'm sort of surprised Honda was the first to go, but then again, they've done this sort of stuff in the past, so perhaps it wasn't such a shock. And there was something about that Honda team that never seemed quite right to me. Can't really put my finger on what was wrong with it, but they made some really odd decisions over the years, and despite all their optomism they never seemed even remotely capable of being a contender.
I guess the bigger question is, is this the end of F1 as we know it ? I'd say it's a distinct possibilty, which may not be such a bad thing in one sense. If it needs a global financial meltdown to weed out all the money grabbing turds who've been milking this F1 cash cow for years, only to be replaced with genuine and passionate die-hard motor sports enthusiasts who are only interested in the betterment of the sport itself and not how much money they can make from it, then i'd say, bring it on.
I can't remember the exact place i got the info from, but these "facts" have been doing the rounds in the creationists v's evolutionists debate for years
There was one of those weird and ultimately useless statistical fact type things about that not so long ago. I can't remember the details of it, but it was something like. If you took all the stored information in just one single DNA thingy, and downloaded it into a load of modern day supercomputers with the biggest hard drive available, you could stack them up as far as the moon and back, and still not have enough space to store all the information.
Don't understand it myself, and i'm not even sure if it's true, but i guess statisticians have to earn a living somehow.
Well no, that would be like a midget holding up a bank with another midget shoved inside a sock.....erm....the banana will probably have a sawn-off shotgun, and a stocking over his head....erm
Yeah, it is amazing how such a small change in a genetic code can make such huge difference to the end result. There are quite a few colarge's (sp?) on the net of different fetuses in early development, and you'll be hard pushed to tell which one becomes a human from one that ends up a horse, or a mouse, or a Max Mosely. Not got the time right now to hunt for it, but will post it when i can.
Apparently, a halibut has a 98% identical genetic code to us humans, and a banana is about 92% identical. So maybe one day they'll be robbing banks and mugging little old ladies...that'll be and interesting Crimewatch reconstruction
Hmmm, couple of interesting sentences in that Alonso quote.
He claims in 2005 the Renault had 1000hp, yet they always said they didn't have the quickest car. But the Ferrari's were putting out just over 900 at the time. And, he says the sport has gone backwards coz the cars have less grip and no driver aids these days !. Says a lot about the guy....pussy.
Hunt out Colin McRae at the X Games a few years back when he was driving the gold Scooby.
(Not sure if the "X Games" is the right name for the event, but it's something like that. Anyway the vid was posted in here a while back on one of his tribute threads after he died, so go take a look-see)
Ahh, yeah, this is where it all gets a bit confusing for us not tech-heads. The performance and subsequent reviews seem to depend on which brand of card you get. With just a quick look it seems the XFX one gets good reviews but the Asus one's are pretty mediocre.
I am looking to upgrade right now and need some advice, but i don't wanna hijack someone else's thread, will start my own in a bit...
I found a really neat little gizmo the other day for Falcon 4. It's a little app you can control most (if not all) the buttons, switches and controls in the cockpit from your pocket pc. It's not free, but a tenner-ish aint gonna break the bank. And it sure does beat having to fanny about changing views and pressing what you hope is the right button with the mouse.
I've been loathed to get involved in this thread at a serious level for many reasons. One of them being, it's a topic that's been going round in circles since page 2.
However, at this juncture i'd like to say
I think you've got more faith than me, i really do...
