Thanks Jack, its not really a question of budget, it was more of understanding what is actually required. If a quad core didnt actually make that much difference, then why buy one?
However, now you and previous posters have explained, it is worth while upgrading to a c2d or quad core, purely because LFS isnt the only application running. Now it makes sense to buy the fastest you can afford.......what ever that may be.
Whenever I post in a thread and then click on NEW POSTS, the thread I have just posted in doesn't appear at the top of the list.....
Is this a forum setting I have missed or is it supposed to do that?
Thanks for that, didn't think of that at all:doh:
So now I'm in the same boat as everyone else..........
trying to get the fastest system for my budget (whatever that is)
I've been reading a few of the threads for new PC's and it got me thinking...
Excuse the noob enquiry.
LFS has been written to work on single core chips.
Does that mean if I buy a quad core PC that 3 of those cores are doing diddly squat?
I'm looking to upgrade from an athlon 3000xp with a 7900xt 128mb and 1gb ram.
I'm not playing any other games or dvd burning etc etc. This will be purely for LFS.
The bottom line is this, at what point, do you draw the line in terms of processing speed. Do I buy the fastest single core Intel or AMD because everything beyond that is surplus and a waste of money or just go and get a quad core and be done with it?
BTW how much faster is the slowest Quad over the fastest single core in terms of LFS performance?
Nice to hear those stories of when "we were kids", but these are big boys toys!!
Granted mine is the bottom of the pile in terms of power/speed, but on a good day it'll drag you along the beach no problem at all and possibly pick you up off the ground.
I was watching some blokes last weekend kite jumping, but they were using 10m kites with bars and harnesses!!
I'm probably too old to start doing things like that, I dont bounce so easily now hehehe.
You can always turn this to your advantage, try using a slower car to their faster car ie you drive lx4 and they drive lx6, mix up the combinations until you find one that suits. Another option is to add weight to your car or restrict your power output.
I noticed someone around here had a 'Heroes' avatar and wondered what it was all about.
A couple of weeks ago a new TV series started on BBC2 called Heroes.
This sort of program usually doesn't bother me, but I have to say i'm really enjoying it ATM.
Anyone else into it?
I work for the Local Authority here and i've been around the wosrt hit areas helping and doing our bit. Evesham is like a war zone around Waterside. Funny how people have short memories when they say this is a once in a lifetime event. I was doing this after the floods of Easter 1998, they were only 150mm (ish) lower than this......
I live in a village about 8 miles away from Evesham and Pershore in Worcestershire and we are totally cut off because of flood water!!!
Thankfully we are not actually flooded just cut off.
My wife is currently stranded in Tewkesbury. There is no chance of her getting home today either due to the huge floods between there and home.
I know there are other drivers who live in this area and wondered how they were doing.
There is another village close by (about 4 miles) called Sedgeberrow and thet have had to be airlifted out of their homes by the Air Sea Rescue helicopters.
I'm a big fan of the Tour, but all this doping talk is killing the sport. We have Paul Sherwin and Phill Liggett as commentators for ITV in the UK, and they keep going on about how FAST the average speed is going up. It makes you wonder how year in year out they can keep on maintaining these speeds without some sort of enhancing drugs.
I know these guys are at the top of their sport and that they train all year BUT you cant help but wonder sometimes......
The other strange thing is Bjarne Riis (sp?) admitting taking EPO. He is now trying to tell us his team are the cleanest because they are posting all their test results on the internet for us all to see.!!!!
Lance Armstrong was allegedly one of the most dope tested athletes ever and nothing was found, is he super fit or did he have some very clever people in his team.
The discussion about this will drag on for as long as cycling exists as a sport.
