thanks bob, intresting read. im guessing carbs and fuel injection would also have slightly diffrent reactions to the problem.
Quote :Engine efficiency improves considerably at open road speeds; it peaks in most applications at around 75% of rated engine power, which is also the range of greatest engine torque

found that quite intresting, might explain why i get 37mpg at 80mph.

Quote from Bob Smith :New does not automatically mean good, or that everyone will care. Although a great achievement for LFS, as a player I don't find the prospect of it exciting, as it's so similar (spec wise) to the FXO. It's not really extending the variety of cars on offer within LFS, IMO.

Of course this argument is only valid as a long term player, to new players it will be the VW that's exciting and the FXO that is less so.

But i would have thought a part of you may be intrested (even if not excited) in the use of multilink suspension in lfs? To see how the physics engine represents it handling wise? I admit having two similar cars is a bit of a let down, but at least its an "advancement" as such.

Quote from Bob Smith :

You realise that due to pumping loss, maximum efficiency is achieved at full throttle (on a petrol)? That's why smaller engines are (generally) more efficient, it's because you're ragging them.

Pumping loss? Give me a quick techy rundown please bob!

not bad timing there :P

true, but smaller engine doesnt always mean more MPG. at higher speeds the bigger engine will be more efficent (in a way) as itll need less throttle to keep at a steady 70mph. a little 1.2 might need 50-75% tthrottle where a 2.0 is using 10%. even my 2.0 carbed engine gets 40mpg on a 70mph run!

Quote from S14 DRIFT :They may not be, but I for one AM in a rush to get a new patch, it's been a long time since we've had any sort of new 're-defining' content.

Even a 'status update' would be so great, instead of nothing nothing nothing nothing nothing EVERYTHING nothing nothing as we've been getting so far. It would seem like they're actually doing something then.

Quote from The General Lee :Well, I don't actually have head gasket issues. More of a 'crack in the head' issue. Which is a much bigger and costly job than a head gasket. If it was the head gasket, I would do it myself, but I need a new head. So I don't have the head gasket issues of mayo on my oil cap etc, but I have a lot of air getting into the system causing it to overheat. Heaters are blowing cold air too.

E2/Rob - It would be easy to do the swap if I had the 325 there. But, seeing as I'm only using it to Tramp Dirft, I might aswell use the 325

Rob - I would actually love to come up. I only put the V-Power type fuels in my car. What is that going for up there? We'll have to arrange it once my engine is in.

Tramp dirft? English please young man!
And a head swap would be the same as a head gasket, and probably be much easier then a whole engine swap, 8 bolts compared to about 20bolts and a load of wiring!
camblet off, Head off, gasket off. new gasket on, new head on, new cambelt, done!
V-power is probably about £1.04 id say, maybe up to £1.06. will look when i go past a shell garage next

Bit of an old quote but..........you might want to come soon, and bring an empty tank of petrol its 97p a litre

On the head gasket issue, you getting the mayonaise effect? (white gunk round the radiator cap etc)
Head gasket shouldnt be too much of an issue, only a flush and a camblet and maybe new head bolts, just make sure the head wasnt warped at all. Though i dont know how complicated that would be. But my mate did the head gasket on his Rover 45 (K-series engine, suprise suprise) with absaloutely no mechanical experience and a haynes manual.
and a flat 6 swap would be easy if theres a 6cyl 3 series, just need to swap it all over

The space between two of those words there is too big, Astra.

17mpg is the only quote on mpg i have found on google, but thats in a land rover almost triple the weight of a capri. also, rover V8s go up to 340bhp in production cars. only the original P5/P6 engine has 119-150bhp. everything 3.9 and up has more. (wouldnt mind that 5.0 340bhp one myself!)

EDIT: quote from TVR forum on the 4.0 in a car a similar weight (bearing in mind its a TVR tuned model)
Quote :"Should give low 20s mpg when driving rural, or even 80 on motorway. Down to about half a mile per gallon if going for sub five second nought to sixties, or three second 30 to 100s."

EDIT 2: someone else with the 4.5 model is quoted at doing 24-33mpg on a run!

theres a few mint ones of them, all about 7k+ though!
dont really fancy a heavy, low powered fuel drinking engine. prefer a rover V8, same weight as my 2.0 but double the power

they are sitting in the boot (just incase mr policeman decides to be a bit narky), prefer the tinted ones all the mods im doing to the car will be completely reversable, so that way if i do sell i can get more money as itll be original. still gotta find time to fit a 4-2-1 manifold and EFi system, and upgrade to 4pot calipers, its all sitting there waiting for me to do, just need someone with the know-how.
Also need to re-align that bonnet!

Quote from SamH :
I'd love for the teams to completely reject the new engine regulation proposals. I'm betting Ferrari will win the tender and everyone else will shudder in disgust and walk away. Mercedes and Renault would surely never accept a Ferrari engine in their cars

That would make it a Ferrari engine on a mclaren ECU just to keep it simple of course
