I'm averaging 8.5MPG (EU gallons). I have done over 22,000 miles, but I never raced S1 much, and only owned it for 8 months prior to S2 being released, so its fairly accurate. I almost always race road-cars and not single seaters, so thats explains why its quite high.

Thanks for the info on the 306's Tristan, and the advice on the dodgy seals on the shaped fog lights, i'll be sure to follow your advice if I get one.

Anyone know of a good cheap insurance company? So far I've just been using the RAC for quotes, I'm sure they're not the cheapest though.

Alfa's are a tad more expensive on the insurance than I can realistically afford - still in full time education so only working weekends. I'd probably end up nailing it into a tree anyway

Really all I want is something simple, safe and mostly cheap. I would prefer one that handles reasonable and isn't too small which is why I am looking at a 306, of course speed isn't something i'm worried about. Insurance is a funny thing, in my 306 example, its actually £1,600 where I currently live, so when I move in 2 weeks I save £500 on it. Odd thing is I ran an old 1992 Nissan Micra 1L through it as well, the cost was £60 a year between that and the 306 down in Devon. Where I live now, the difference was a couple of hundred.
What first car to buy?

I'm hoping to have my driving licence soon, and I'm starting to look at what car to buy. I've previously owned a couple of cars which I used for messing around in (on private land, obviously), and more recently for learning to drive in. However I have a couple of grand put aside for buying a proper car.

So in my position, what car would you buy? What do you think is the best value for money on the market at the min? I really don't have a clue, I was thinking of maybe a Peugeot 306, they're cheap, look tidy, and on insurance a '99 1.4LX is £1092 via the RAC for 3rd party with rescue.

Your new gravel & grass texture updates look like a vast improvement over stock ones, unfortunately I can't test because my ISP isn't compatible with Rapidshare Any chance you can upload them somewhere else like Megaupload?

Its fun to try, I found the DFP doesn't really counter-turn fast enough without a bit of help, normally I run rally in 420 degrees, I've never seen a rally car with the full 900.

Sounds like your having plenty of fun with your DFP though
Anyone living in North Devon?

Hi, just wondering if anyone here was living in North Devon. I'm moving to Umberleigh in 3 weeks (approx 6 miles from Barnstaple), and was wondering if anyone had any advice on things like transportation, areas to visit/avoids, crime levels, the job market, etc.

I'll be studying at North Devon College for an NVQ3 in IT, so I'd also be interested to hear from anyone working in a computer related job in Devon on how the market is in that part of the country. I get the impression there's not that many IT-related jobs in Devon, but still.

Cheers

I'd probably still be stuck following NFS games. Since I started driving LFS I lost a lot of interest in arcade racing games (though I still play them sometimes). I'd also probably still be heavily into FPS games, and wouldn't have such an interest in understanding vehicles & physics.

I'd have a lot more money in my pocket as well. All this sim-equipment is expensive, and I'm turning half the spare bedroom of the new house into a functional cockpit.

Get that gravel texture released asap Looks nice.

One thing I noticed, is when people update Blackwood textures, they never seem to take the rally parts into consideration. I've had to remove a high-res grass texture because the creator didn't do the grass verge for the rally bits, looked very strange.

Very nice work so far! I like the small imperfections you added, like the cracks where the tarmac was layed in different stages. Looks excellent.

Come on man, get some updated pics out the door!

Seriously though I hope you guys take all the time you need to get the textures "just right", its annoying when quality gets compromised due to time pressure.

The way gearshifting is currently done is very annoying for me. I do not flat shift, I lift off - I have no choice, I have 3 pedals and a shifter, so flat shifting feels wrong and unrealistic. But this makes me slower, simply because I am going for a more realistic approach. I don't think this is fair.

The other thing that nags me is you can't stall the car because the silly auto clutch won't let you, but thats another topic.

IRL I did used to flat shift my old Nissan Micra, but that engine was so slow to pick up that it never harmed it or the clutch. Never done it to more than that tin can though.

Great work, I appreciate the effort. The first one I ran last night, but couldn't get used to how vibrant everything was. Sorta ruined the "feeling" a track has a bit. The screenshots of V2 look great, downloading it now.

Did anyone understand a word Mr Shinanigans said?

Or they could do the sensible thing and get it right 1st time for a change?

mcman, thanks for the insight. Don't like the sound of bushing though, hopefully they will be a standard enough size to fit some bearings in there.

Thing is if they tighten up the mesh they'll feel like they're binding, so realistically why are they using gears in the pedals? Those teeth look like module 1 pitch, so there will be quite a bit of play in them.

The pots aren't the problem, its that in the DFP/momo they're not secured enough.

I hope the pedals/shifter have a solid feeling..but tbh mostly I hope they get the wheel perfect, given the choice I will be buying just the wheel anyway, already have Actlabs shifter/pedals The wheel looks very nice..shiny..

Aside from the silly red smoke mod, looks similar to mine, which is a similar setup, but 8xS AA.

If you look in the Unoffical mods section, some people have released high res textures for signs etc, and others have released enhanced textures which have been played with to make look sharper and clearer. Becky Rose & bo-kristiansen have both done this, and the results are nice compared to standard textures.

Also install the Reflection mod, makes the cars look a *lot* better.

Stores bargain bins stuff is never listed on websites. E.g. PC World in the UK, they do the same thing. Except even their bargain bin area is expensive

I ran my straight 9600 128MB on a 250w supply without problems..wouldn't think the XT will draw that much more power.

DFP's the best bet for your money definately.

I thought mine was damaged in the middle as well when I first got it, then I realised it was just the GT4 logo

If you really want a free cookie, goto your local Millies Cookies, get a member card thingy, and then go up there a week later and tell them its your birthday and show them the card. They give you a free cookie or 3
