Quote from amp88 :That's not gonna work...unless you're dangling a chain or a necklace and telling me I'm sleepy.

Just as a point of interest, the hypnotism thing doesn't work by telling someone they feel sleepy. Can't get the buggers into a hypnotic state that way. Bizarrely, hypnotic trances are heightened but subconscious states of awareness. Strange but true. (I've been studying hypnotism, btw. Can you tell? )

Back on topic, I don't swear around people I don't know. Rightly or wrongly, a propensity for swearing suggests the individual has a small lexicon.

The expectation on people to refrain from swearing is societal. If you live in society, as most of us do, it's expected that you will refrain from swearing. Of course the internet gives small-minded people the opportunity to wear big anonymous boots and carry virtually big sticks. This is an avenue often pursued by repressed teenagers, desperately seeking to assert their own individuality.

The truth of the matter is that these people generally don't behave this way, away from the internet, among people they don't know - dinner parties etc. They refrain from using profanities, uttering racial slurs and abuse etc. Unless the segment of society they exist within is regressive, run-down inner city etc, where social expectations are near non-existent.

But yeah, most of us live in societies where expectations exist. Don't assume that everyone should believe that we should break the chains of these oppressive societies. Most of us are quite happy living in societies. We get sanitation, streets, street lighting, electricity/gas delivered and we get money for towing the society line and holding down a job - money which we spend on X-Boxes, PS3s and cars. We're happy. So we're expected (perhaps even required) not to hurl racial abuse at each other in public, but in the great scheme of things it's not really much of a price to pay.

The fact that Mosley backs Todt is itself reason enough to vote Vatanen.

As Mosley himself boasted, while trying to divide and conquer FOTA, he and Todt struck secret deals which, by his own admission, gave advantages and FIA favour to Ferrari under Todt's leadership.

Though Di Montezemolo had already made this information available to the other FOTA teams after Todt's departure from Ferrari, and FOTA was unaffected by Mosley's "revelations", nevertheless those deals existed through the duration of the last Concorde agreement.

For the very fact that Mosley admits that the FIA could be (and was) bribed, I think that the monopoly on motorsports governance that the FIA has been granted should be under investigation and review by the European Commission that allowed it in the first place.

I'd be very surprised if, IF Vatanen doesn't get elected, he'd not use his influence in the EU to get that investigation under way. And if he doesn't get elected, I'll support and encourage that review.

Vatanen FTW, one way or the other!

Quote from Pablo Donoso :to excersize our lawfully given right to "freedom of speech"

And there's the other. You don't have a right to freedom of speech on this forum, so it's probably a good idea to concentrate on that for a moment and get used to the idea.

What we practice is a type of liberty of speech that is tempered by freedom FROM abuse, offense and insult. We also practice a policy of "if we don't like it, we'll get rid of it".

Yep, it's still happening!

Owing to the changing face of motorsports at the top level, and in order to position ourselves to give V1 racers the best possible opportunities during the competition, we've opted to delay launch until the end of the current F1 season. I'd love to tell you all about it but we can't yet.

We're lining up ducks at the moment.

Quote from DEVIL 007 :Sam,
from a moderator I would be expecting more friendly attitude - I really did not like the phrase about fooling myself and the cable part. Please stop trying to make an ididot from me. I had always respect for you being neutral all the time yet you had to dissapointed me .

I didn't think I was being unfriendly and I wasn't trying to make an idiot out of you. I was just pointing out some facts. What I said about FPS is true, and I think that it's important not to obsess about things that don't make a difference.

Finding what is causing the drop in reported framerate is a worthy cause but I think it's very important to keep in context what the impact of the drop really is.. and a drop of 100fps from 500 to 400fps is genuinely not pivotal to the visual operation of LFS on a 2009 monitor. ANY monitor. That drop would be proportionate to my Celeron D dropping from 100fps to 80fps. Believe me, it drops a lot more than that sometimes.

Stating what I think and how I feel.. that's what I do, I'm afraid. I'm not neutral.. I'm just me

Just to add to that, whatever framerate is being reported by LFS/FRAPS, the framerate being delivered to your eye is whatever Hz your monitor is running at. If your graphics card is cranking out 500fps but your monitor is running at 85Hz, then ONLY 85fps will pour out of your monitor. Anything FPS, in excess of the number of Hz, is just wasted cycles.

[edit] That also means that, unless you don't have frames locked to Hz, and have that ugly tearing going on (which nobody in their right mind would volunteer for), if you THINK you can see the difference between 400fps and 500fps, you're fooling yourself. BUT, if you're interested, I have some audio cables for sale, with carbo-goldium tipped connectors for £600, which will DOUBLE the quality of the audio out of your stereo.. and you'll definitely hear the difference!...

Not trying to nitpick, just an observation.

Meh.. it shouldn't say that either. It's a bit medieval, "hear ye, hear ye..."

I recommend

It's entirely up to you, Vic, but I'm firmly of the belief that you cannot burden yourself with the responsibility of defending LFSers from hack attempts on their personal email boxes.

It's up to them to ensure that their email password is secured, and it's up to them to ensure that, if they join a website for example, they don't sign up with guessable or re-used passwords, or (god forbid) their email inbox password. There are even some LFS-oriented websites about that, frankly, I wouldn't trust as far as I could throw a fit. If LFSers are being compromised that way it's not YOUR error, Vic. It's theirs.

Quote from durbster :Clearly not, which is a bit of a shame. Everyone should be aware of this stuff at the very least.

I rather agree. The first thing Hitler did, as soon as he was able, was to imprison and torture any and all opposition, anyone who disagreed with him, anyone who was overheard questioning his policies and practices.

People who think Hitler was a good leader should by the same token also think that all those bankers that got us in this idiotic financial crisis should be praised for their insights in short-termism and cowboy boom/bust economics. What Hitler did was atrocious from the get-go.. what he did to Germany and its people, and what he went on to do to the rest of Europe. Absolutely NOTHING that Hitler did, at ANY point, deserves praise.

And we, the rest of the world, can't shirk our responsibilities either. We facilitated his sick and twisted mayhem with our vindictive subjugation of the German people after WWI. And bugger me if we're not doing the same bloody thing in Iraq, all over again. Idiots, the lot of us, and the cherry on the top of the idiot cake is definitely Hitler.

Thing is, for us licenced racers, uploading skins is something many of us do often. We don't think about how excellent the feature is, and of course we don't think about how much it means to a non-licenced user to have someone do them this favour. I just wanted to remind you that it's a WAY COOL feature, but one that is deliberately supposed to be ONLY available to those who purchase a licence

[edit] However, importantly, uploading skins that you didn't create yourself and/or don't have permission from the REAL creator of the skin.. that really is socially unacceptable. Upload only skins you KNOW you have a right to share with others. And... never upload pr0n.

Guys, I think Kubas was simply saying "Oh, this is a nice skin". I don't think he was claiming it as his own.

That said... Oli, you're not supposed to be circumventing the licencing system. The reason demo racers frequently request skin uploads is because that is one of the features of a paid-for licence. If you provide that service to them, there is less/no incentive to make a licence purchase. Please don't provide the service to demo racers.

From Timdpr: This is the first time since 1985 that the German Grand Prix has taken place at the Nürburgring. (Instead of the European Grand Prix etc).

Bernie seems to be somewhat misguided in his understanding of who Hitler was and what Hitler did. I'm really not sure where in normal life you'd actually get that kind of illusion about Hitler, but somehow Bernie seems to have collected it at some point. Rather a weird and distorted understanding, really.. and suspiciously bizarre.

The media definitely seems to be compounding the problem. Any mention of Hitler is automatically examined for hints of anti-Semitism. I'm less than impressed by that trend, but it's been cumulative for about 60 years now. It's a bit too witch-hunt for my taste, but understanding the politics behind The Times newspaper is important to keep a proper perspective.
