Just wondering, is there any way to get into the game right now? It seems like they have closed registration for it and I just want to try it out to see what all the craze is about.

Talking about the Boston marathon does not mean that none of us care about the other stuff. I don't see you guys starting a thread about any of the other topics. What are you doing to raise awareness about those causes?

Here's my response to you guys who feel the need to say shit like this:

Quote from Boris Lozac :Hahah best comment: Pretty sure i just saw the WHOLE film in that trailer.

Doesn't matter in a movie like this. Anyone can find out the story if they want to. It's sort of like the Titanic. People know what's going to happen because it's a true story. You watch the movie strictly just to enjoy watching a movie. There won't be any twists or anything. Everything will basically happen according to history. Therefore, who cares if they show clips from the beginning to the end of the movie?

If you're looking for a stream, go to "youtube.com/drive". They have the rights (so it won't go down) to stream to the US. If it goes well enough, they plan to expand that list to other countries next year.

I watched the stream last night and it was really well done.

Quote from dawesdust_12 :That's still though 40% of traffic that people have come to LFS organically though. at 10,000 (example) hits, that's still 4000 people which is a large amount to actually serve a video towards.

It makes sense to have a video. Yes the 60% that know about LFS will probably click through (or they might watch if they only know LFS is cool, but know nothing about it).

That makes sense to me. Especially because I've thought about it since my last post and had this thought. Even if they search for live for speed to get here, it doesn't necessarily mean that they know what it is. The purpose of the trailer is to explain what Live for Speed ACTUALLY is. Not what they heard from their friend or read on a website. It is a chance for the developers to explain their product in their own words.

Quote from Cornys :Personally - while it was a project that I was involved with from Alpha testing - I really do like this website's home page (nobody here has likely heard of this game before by the way so we're approaching this page like a new LFS user may our future site, so let's just take this site for an example.)

http://utanks.com/

Likes
-Simple login area at top with register option
-Watermark background which depicts the game to confirm what game this is, but it's not distracting.
-Love the fact that all of the sub sites of the game are linked directly below the top in a bar rather than down the side of the screen.
-News items are kept away from the eyes initially, but are still included.
-Promotional and informative paragragh describing the game (below initial view, people only scroll if they want more information, and they only read if they want more information)
-Simple. There's a black back ground, and the focus of the home page is simply centered around the game its self. No large or detailed immages distracting the visitor from it.

Dislikes
-Social media promotion links included towards top of home page.

Let's take another example that we're all probably familiar with to compair:

http://www.formula1.com/

-Bar across the top again
-Abstract background (not eye catching)
-Videos are always in links on the home page. (There's something amature about a video being included on a home page IMO)
-Large bodies of text and information are kept below the top of the page which is visible at first, but they are included.

I actually really like the idea of how the formula 1 site is done. My original idea for the website was one I didn't feel like I could explain well enough/show with another website, but this will help.

When you first go to the formula 1 website, there is a animation where the F1 logo is created. I think it would be awesome to do the same thing with the LFS website, but instead:

1) Introduce a nice picture.
2) Blur it out immediately.
3) Have racing sounds/car sound with the LFS logo coming on to the screen (I don't know what the best way to have the LFS logo appear would be).
4) Have the LFS logo glide up towards the top of the screen and have the rest of the website fade into the same thing as I had above:

Now, as much as I like the Formula 1 site, I can't agree with the utanks site. It suffers from the same, throw everything at the screen at once mentality. It's just too busy for my taste.

In my opinion, a great website guides the user on a pretty precise path. In the layout for the utanks site, that isn't happening. I am seeing the sign up / download buttons before I even know what the game is.

I clicked onto that website and the first thing I wanted to know is what is the game. Clearly it's a tank game, but is it a overheard shooter, fps, MMO, cartoon game? I have no idea. Also, I didn't even see the login area until I continued to read through your post. It's not nearly clear enough.

For the LFS website, you need something different. It must be eye-catching, educational, and interesting all at the same time. There should never be a point where the viewer is confused or not be able to find what he/she wants. Of course, that's a bunch of theoretical talk. Implementation is the difficult part.

So, I took a look at another thread in this area of the forum and found this picture (posted by Becky Rose):

It shows that almost all traffic to the website is from someone who has heard of/knows about live for speed. In deciding the new page, I would love to see information on how many of these viewers are first time viewers.

Knowing that people may have a basic understanding of live for speed, having a trailer as the first thing is probably unnecessary and would just be an extra step for people to take.

I am working on making a different way that may fix the problem while still not taking first time viewers straight to the site. Having seen that Victor wants the site to the multilingual, I am working on an idea that includes that.

On that note, to Victor, is there a particular set of languages you would like to include for the website? That would really help me to make my idea.

WARNING: This thread has a lot of words. If you don't like reading, look at the pretty pictures. Unfortunately, you won't really get the point of this thread without reading...

So, we are going to design a new website. Let's not start throwing out possible layouts and voting on them. That's a stupid way to go about it. It's better to throw out ideas and see what sticks. And that's why I'm making this thread. It's my idea (and possibly a layout as well…cause I'm a hypocrite).

I think the biggest problem bad websites haves that they try to hard to give you information. It's as if they think that if you see something, you have to read it / click it / watch it. Live for Speed is definitely an offender of this crime.

Let's start off by taking a look at our website:

Text. So much freaking text. Text on text on text. Get rid of that crap. A picture is worth a thousand words. Use it.

Having so much text just ruins the design of the website. What do I read first? Should I be scrolling down to read the information and ignore what is on the screen right now? Do create a new account? Do I click something on the side? It's confusing and it sucks. Get rid of it.

MAIN PAGE INTRO
Instead, do something simple. Give the viewer something simple to look at that automatically lets them know: What is Live for Speed?

Now, why is it important to do this? Because we should remember that the main website is there to draw in new people. It's not there to entice current members. So, treat it as such.

The front page should be simple. Put a logo at the top. Put a nice trailer for the viewer to see (this may actually be the hardest part since, let's be honest, Live for Speed is not a gorgeous game).

Here is a mockup look for it for the visual people. Again, this is just how I picture it. This thread is not about my mockup but rather about the idea of minimalism for our future design. Still, someone will understand what my vision of the site would be through pictures better than words:

So, what has the website done so far? The viewer has seen the video and the title. He is interested. He wants to learn more. Now that he is ready, you take him to the main page.

MAIN PAGE
Where is the main page? Just scroll down. Don't make him click on a new link. Make is seamless. I image it being similar to the way this website is set up: http://www.realmacsoftware.com/clear/

Before we start thinking about what the main page should be like, let's see what it is right now:

It's just all news. While news is important, it doesn't function to do anything. In order to understand why this doesn't work, it's important to understand what the main website should do. The main website is for new people. It's for people who don't know about Live for Speed. Therefore, the main page is there to sell the game and it will sell the game by informing the viewer about the game. Look at any websites that are selling software. It lists what it all it does.

Therefore, the front page shouldn't be about the news. It should be listing what all the game has. List about the simulation, the cars, the tracks. Think about making it like the "What is LFS" page on the current website.

I don't really know how to do this page, but I do know one thing. Don't have so much text. Have a short paragraph with some really great pictures for each point.

I don't have time to finish this post right now. I plan on updating my post with new ideas as I have time and maybe some more mock ups as well. Let me know what you guys think. Don't worry about tearing it up and saying it's terrible. I will be including how to include other stuff like links to demo, buying the game, and the Q&A areas of the site.

Feel free to throw out some ideas that you have as well.

I love minimalistic watches. They seem to either be really damn expensive or really damn simple. Never seems to be a middle ground. Right now, I'm quite liking this:
