oops... here's my amazing ms paint drawing.
3 Viewports for immersive cockpit display
Technique

I'm not on expert on this, so bear with me. Current sim setups use 3 monitors (triple-head-to-go or multiple video cards) or a large projection screen. Most 3 monitor setups I've seen have the left and right monitors angled in at the user (which is wrong because they're acting as one large widescreen display). In order to get a sense of speed and also to see the side mirrors, we must set a high FOV which makes this single viewport distorted.

1) So what we really need is support for 3 viewports... this way we can set a natural FOV for each viewport (left, front, right).
2) We'd also need support for monitors with different resolutions/aspect ratios if we do not have this already (since the side displays do not need to be wide).
3) Finally, it would be ideal if there was ingame support for setting up these views correctly. See my amazing drawing created with ms paint. The 3 grey views are the displays, the blue is the windshield of my actual cockpit (not the game). I find it difficult with the current view controls to set the center view to say... just display what's visible through the windshield from the drivers perspective.

So for instance my car's windshield is 42" wide by 27" long, but due to the extreme angle of the windshield it's actually only ~12" high. So if display existed on the market that is 42"x12" I would want the whole display to be "the view out of the windshield (from the drivers perspective)".

Does any of this make any sense? It's late

I've never made a video, but I believe people run and record the replays at the slowest speed and speed it up afterwards using other video software to get the smoothest animation.

awesome. One of the owners of Flyin Miata also built a Locost. He has a build diary here if you're interested:

http://www.cheapsportscar.net/

He also wrote a book about his build. TBH, I don't have the skills to do the build myself. So I'd either pay them to build it (build cost is only $5k which isn't bad at all considering the amount of work involved) or work with my father on it (he restores classic cars).

@rac setup:
oh oops, well I've only had S2 for a short period so I haven't really run the RAC on any tracks except the rally stage and FE Black. For FE Black I practiced a bit using the default setup but I think I'm pretty far off of the WR (it's a fairly long track).

For the RAC I used the default setup with hybrid tires. I changed the gear ratio a bit as the gears in the default setup were too far apart. I can send it to you in a bit (its on my other pc) if you want.

I haven't driven the LX6 much but I did drive the LX4 for a couple of runs of autox and it was awesome. I'm actually thinking of building one of these once i pay off my car:

http://www.flyinmiata.com/westfield/

I used to own an mx-5 and that engine was built like a tank - dead reliable.. I abused the heck out of that poor car.

Thanks kabliuks, I took note of your car choice as well In the RAC/LX4/FZ5 FE Black practice before the season started, I could not even make it through 2-3 turns without losing control in the RAC. We were advised not to use LX6 and RAC in round 2, so I took this as an opportunity to challenge myself. Also, I prefer proper sports cars (FR/MR) so if I have a chance I'll choose them over FWD/AWD any day. I was a little disappointed they wanted to change the future races to one make, because I'd rather not be forced to use FWD if there's a RWD car in the same class, but I can understand their reasoning for doing so.

But anyway, shouldn't this typing of voting be done at the end of the season? I'm sure there will be other factors that alter your decision later.

haha. What can I say... hard work pays off. Just kidding..

I'm not sure how genius it was though. I forgot I needed a skin with my entry # on it, so I only had a few minutes to make one and that was the first thing to come to mind (I also figured it would be ironic if I caused a massive pileup!).

Quote from Boris Lozac :Do you have some video or some informations how complex was the Physics simulation of that Ferrari game?? I drove lots of those games in arcades and they were all rubish, interesting just because you are "inside the car" but the physics were uber crap.

adultrated, I did look into Race Drivin' and it does have a lot of firsts for racing simulators.

1st 3d polygon driving sim
1st game to use FF wheel
It also had a clutch and shifter.
The person responsible for the car modeling is supposedly one of the best in the world
The game holds 3 simulator related patents

That said, I found this quote on the same site:
"Despite claiming to be a real driving simulator, there were a lot of discrepancies between the game's software physics and the car physics on screen. However, the cockpit physics were considered very accurate at the time."

p.s. I might be a troll too. My join date says March 04 but I just bought an S2 license and became active again around christmas/new years I actually started in 02 when the forums were at race sim central so I have no idea where the march 04 date is from..

haha... sorry I usually don't get into this web arguments.

Anyway, back on topic. Since race drivin' is one of the best simulators we should add it to the list. It would be cool if someone could post a vid drifting around a course in the game.... I've never played the arcade version.

I could care less about the schematics, how many cpus it had, or how poor the emulation is. Hell, my laptop can barely run an emulated version of Super Mario Bros. If this thread was an evaluation of the performance of modern emulation, perhaps your post would actually make sense.

We're comparing the physics of simulators. You brought up performance. I simply stated that a modern personal PC is quite a bit faster than ANY machine from 1990. This has nothing to do with emulation. I think you are a bit confused.

Have a nice day.

Quote from adulterated :Your console or PC isn't anywhere near as powerful as the prehistoric arcade machine. It's one main reason why these games can't be emulated even with a quad or dual core.

This arcade game was made in 1990. The world's fastest super computer in 1990 was the NEC SX-3/44R. It ran at a whopping 400mhz and was able of calculating 23.2 GFlops. According to wikipedia, the "nVidia 8800 Ultra performs around 576 GFlops. The GPU on the PS3 runs at a claimed 2 teraFLOPS". Yeah, you must be right... today's computers are much slower than arcade machines from 1990... or am I missing the joke?

And just to put this into perspective... in 1997 (7 years after the arcade game was made), the cost per GFlop was $30,000 USD. Today, the cost per GFlop is $0.20.

Hey, now that i looked at the replay it was probably my fault. So I should apologize! He had the run on me and towards the end of the runoff area the rear of his car was slightly ahead of my front tires. If I had lifted and got behind him I would have only lost a spot I wrote this post from memory but really it was not as I described.

He had actually given me plenty of room (maybe not enough to hold my line... but he was passed me so it was my fault!) Anyway, I'm bored and needed something to rant about to avoid doing real work.

Question about run off areas
Technique
S2 licensed
At the end of the blackwood straight in round 1, someone attempted to pass me by taking the inside line. We were about equal through the turn. At the corner exit we were still side by side and I used the run off area while the car inside of me went from the inside all the way to the edge of the track (where his left tires were at the edge of the track near the runoff area). Well, the runoff area is fairly short there and I quickly found myself in a situation where the runoff area was ending and I had no where to go. I tried to get my right side wheels on the track but the other car was there and we made slight contact and I wound up going in the grass and losing a bit of time. My other option would be to brake and let him and another car pass and dive back onto the track.

What's the right thing to do in this situation? Should I not have used the runoff area? Had I not used it he would have had a harder time passing but I thought I would prevent contact by giving him more room. I'm technically not off the course correct? So it is his responsibility to give me room to come back on?

Quote from adulterated :Actually, I didn't say anything about the console versions....consoles suck period....your console controllers and console wheel controllers aren't arcade grade materials/equipment and aren't doing it justice. I'm talking bout the single seater arcade unit with 3 screens for panoramic view and the full size replica metal shifter.

Driving technique in F355 Challenge is more true to real life than LFS is at the moment. LFS is close, but F355 is that much more closer when it first came out in 1999 and it still is to this day.

PC's do not come with arcade quality controllers, but there's nothing preventing you from buying them - so your comparison is invalid. High-end commercial grade controls and an immersive display will cost a fair amount of money - but purchasing an F355 arcade cabinet is probably even more expensive.

How does the software compare? Is F355 as realistic physics-wise as LFS?

Just kidding, I just voted for SO because it's not a difficult track and I believe everyone will be more professional this time.

Quote from luftrofl :I'm sorry, what cars are you talking about?

In my experience, the least amount of rotation I've ever seen is 900 degrees in the Nissan Z32 NA.

The new 2008 s2000 CR (club racer) is 864 degrees (compared to the normal model which is 936). But yeah this is really rare. My car is ~1076. A ferrari f430 f1 is >1080.
Flipped car policy and safety car procedure
Technique
S2 licensed
This post is a request to change the flipped car policy. I appreciate the hard work on the rally stage by the medical cars, but I don't think they should be used in the future.

In a 10 lap race, if you flip your car your race should be over. Finishing in last 2-3 laps down in the same as finishing last due to DNF. Due to LFS's bad crash physics, attempting to ram a flipped car can send that car (or the medical car) flying towards cars lapping the circuit. Also, it takes up too much time and too many laps (in such a short race) to attempt to get the car upright. Chances are the car will sustain even more damage from ramming making it undrivable anyway.

I'm not sure how all LFS leagues handle situations like this, but I just watched one of the recent replays from the IGTC series and I think they did a pretty good job handling this situation.

1) On lap 15, a car flipped in the last turn at blackwood. The flipped car did not chat when flipped.
2) The yellow flag was brought out and a message saying "Safety Car Deployed" was displayed
3) The pace car waited in a safe area by T1 for the leaders.
4) As the leaders approached, the pace car accelerated towards a safe speed
5) Although the pace car pulled out near the leaders some cars towards the back of the pack got caught up behind it and were allowed to pass.
6) The pace car maintained ~62mph and avoided using brakes at all costs. Pace car pushed in the clutch to maintain speed and coast down hills instead of braking. Braking was only used when necessary (such as T1).
7) When the pace car had lapped ~1/2 the circuit the flipped car was requested to spectate (the only chat message during this entire scenario).
8) Once the flipped car spectated, the pace car did one more lap around the circuit.
9) A red message was displayed reminding everyone that the safety car was in the next lap - and a reminder to hold a 2 car gap to avoid collisions which the drivers obeyed.
10) The pace car accelerated away towards the pits and the race leader set pace speed until the green flag was displayed. The leader held maintained the pace car speed of ~60mph.

I don't know what happened in the first rally race as I've wiped it from my memory (I was driving really bad.... sorry!). But I did watch the race 2 replay several times.

In defense of juuretis, his driving on the one green lap he was racing in was fairly clean and he made several good passes.

First, he was hit by TG44. Later, the LFS medical car was driving backwards on the course and hit him head on. He didn't complain about either of those incidents (I would have!). The only thing he did wrong in the race was speed through a caution area (clipping a medical car) and pass under yellow (which other people were doing as well). He asked if his race was over when he flipped the car on its side and race control said "yes". I think people saw him flipped over the entire race and assumed he was causing chaos (based on his pre-race shenanigans ) but really I don't think he did anything too bad (in that race) compared to the other incidents on the track.

TG44, you were spun on the first green lap but your car received little to no damage at that point. It was only damaged when you turned around in front of a juuretis and he hit you (although this was the one incident that was not his fault). If you turned your car around and rejoined the field you would have still had a chance to finish in the top 3. I was spun twice under green and still finished in 4th even though I lost several spots because of those incidents.
