Waiting for a new major release of LFS is a pointless exercise. The people developing this product have demonstrated they have very little business and communication skills. Development skills however they do have, and therefore we have the current release which, is by far, the best online, multi player racing experience for its price to be found on the internet. So people, PLEASE give up on waiting for a new release and simply get online and race and enjoy. The beauty of online games is that the software is only HALF of the fun, the other RACERS make the game... I race at least once a week and get at least one amazing race in...

Who gives a monkey about the next release. I did, for a while, until I gave into the mentality of the development team who are doing whatever they please, even if it upsets their amazingly loyal customers. Race what we have now, enjoy it for what it is... the best online racing bar none...

If a new release comes, lets hope to god that they don't screw it up. Because you will be wishing you had what you have now

I've had some races this week on cargame.nl S2 and Fox Junkies that were, by far, the best racing i've had yet on LFS. The quality of the multiclass racing on cargame.nl is getting better and better...

I didn't need a patch, new tracks nor a new car. And i've been racing in LFS since March 2003... so i've got plenty of experience.

So even though the LFS devs are doing an awful job of communicating their customers about the progress of a much awaited release. At least the programming they HAVE done so far is still excellent and STILL creating awesome online racing...

Quote from Nadeo4441 :Actually, with the current tyre model, your tires heat up while drifting very fast, like in 2 laps... I'm used to drift until they pop... (and that means soapy) It's very annoying to pit after 1-2 laps.

And yet quite accurate. I used to drift a lot in real life on real tracks (mostly Silverstone) and two full laps of Silverstone on full throttle, sideways, will most definitely pop your tyres...

I like this idea and would expand on asking for team chat. I could choose to block chat in the race, but still see important race information (flags, pit details) and also have chat from those i define on my team.

OMG how much fun! I'd love to do a rally around the suburbs of San Jose! We must beg, beg, beg, Scawen to put a Suburban track into LFS. Imagine how much fun that would be!

Quote from Alec01 :And this forum is FULL of whiners. Never seen so many people talking so much sh!t on any other forum. So much speculation and so many silly opinions.

Then you sure as shit ain't spent much time on internet forums. 80% of the content is people moaning, complaining, whining, bitching... if you think that LFS is the worse case, you spend too much time having a real life and being outside...

Quote from Scawen :I hope you now have a better understanding of what I was saying. Some guys, please don't try to take the worst possible view of everything. Most people did understand!

Fantastic to hear an update Scawen, take your time, that game is awesome. But please, when you get time, chip in the odd few lines of an update and don't give a tinkers cuss about the rumors and reactions, small progress information for most people is very valuable and keeps the fire alive.

Quote from sinbad :I'm with you, it's like everyone got tarred with the same brush just because a tiny vocal minority got on SCAVIER's nerves a bit. Like you, I am disappointed that LFS clearly hasn't flourished as many of us had hoped it would.

I guess most of us stick around here because LFS captured our imaginations and impressed us to an extent that is uncommon. In the face of some harsh opposition, we occasionally dare to post our disappointment that we don't think LFS has become all it promised to be in those early days. I think the crux of the matter is, if in 2003 anyone had suggested that LFS would only be what it is currently in 2010, then there would be some real dispute over that. It looked like it would be so much more, and yet none of us really know why it isn't.

Totally agree... LFS by now should have 4x the following and have a lot more improvements. I mean the edge detection bugs on things like the barriers is just terrible and by now should've been fixed. It feels like poor LFS is going to remain a grass roots development when the quality ALREADY acheived is better than most commercial games. It could be SO much more.

BUT

I'm damn happy with what it is... with the time I have been work, my family and actually going out and leaving the house, LFS does the job for what I need from my gaming.

Quote from The Very End :There is no economical reason for them to just be 3, they have stated that several times before. The reason is - because they want to.

Therfor, in the end, it's slow, really slow, but that's how the devs want it. If it's quality assurance, to know they're just those 3 people I don't know, but it's their choise and we got to accept that.

I'v given up wondering why they won't let people help them (for free), but again - their choise.

I feel like you let out a very slow, exhausted sigh after writing that... I don't care how long it takes, as people say the game in it's current state is great fun. I don't run into the bugs that often, it would be nice to get some new content and an improved ride but hey.

The laughable bit of this whole product is how badly the communication to the customers is. This game would be wildly successful with triple the activity, but I bet a good chunk of people just move on due to lack of customer respect. Shame really...

Quote from TAYLOR-MANIA :I'm of the opinion that contact should be avoided, although of course sometimes it is unavoidable, it is most definitely not 'totally acceptable'.

And I agree in all parts to your response. However, combine that network lag, most public server racers take risks and that it is only a game, i'm more than happy with a bit of door rubbing if everything else is fair and square. Of course I avoid contact as much as I can, I hate those moments where cars touch and they suddenly get glued together no matter what you do, and you both crash and burn.

But if i'm engaged in a great few laps with a good racer, paint gets swapped and often if the racing is good, neither of us care. Even with my Track IR pro which is a massive help to close, non contact racing, it's very hard in a game to race closely at full race pace and keep it contact free.

Quote from March Hare :With all that he should be extremely slow coming out of the corners, right? Leave a bit of a gap before coming to the corner leading to the main straight. Catch up to him at the exit and slipstream past on the straight. Or if that isn't enough then pass him braking to the first corner after the main straight.

Mr Hare, i'm in full agreement. Of course if my car was a total mess and a danger to other racers, i'd be spectating.

Just having hot tyres and a suspension geometry pointing in the wrong direction doesn't mean I have to pit, especially if i'm on the last lap and can hold a faster car up for those last few turns.

Quote from lEl E Talon :Nah see I think you just completely stuffed your whole argument there. If your car is damaged and tyres screwed causing you to be off pace, slide off line, struggle to keep control and all that, you should either pit or keep well off the racing line. That kind of nonsense isn't tolerated in RL so there is no hope of it being tolerated in a game.

I disagree. If my car was damaged significantly, i'd pit or spectate. But sometimes it's perfectly ok to be at race speed with a slightly bent toe arm which means you need to be more careful under braking and on turn in. I'd say at least 50% of most online public races people get some slight damage from T1 2 or 3. That doesn't mean they all dive to the pits, most race with a little bent bits here and there and that DOES happen in real life as well. (Not the 50% damage! I mean the slightly bent bits...)

The last lap in some races can result in very hot front tyres which mean i'm braking a little ealier and taking a different line to get the weight to the rear and a later apex. None of these situations warrants a pit. I don't struggle to keep control, if I did, i'd be pitting/spectating, but I would be off the race pace.

Quote from lEl E Talon :you wern't stuffing up every second corner were you? or changing your line through corners every lap? i give people a fair while and be patient but when they constantly stuff up and then cut back onto the line i eventually make a move regardless of if they end up in a wall or not. then they go and cry about how i didn't yield to their bad driving. 2 sides to everything

Not usually, i've been racing a lot on the IHR servers and sometimes i'm in the FXR on a track i've not driven in it before. This means i'm not at full race speed for a few laps. Sometimes I may have race damage from another incident or my tyres might be wildly over heated. In all these instances I might well be off the pace and my line may vary as I struggle for grip and manage suspension damage.

Irregardless of any of the above, if you were trying to overtake and lost patience because I was doing a good job of holding you up whilst trying to keep the car on the track with badly worn tyres... I would expect you to pay the same respect to racing as if I was flat out at full race speed.

Making a move out of desperation resulting in someone in the wall is a sure sign of a bad racer.

Quote from JohnPenn :Good post, In an an Ideal world with no lag, and no plonkers I would Agree. But Its not so I leave room until I know I don't have to.
Contact with others is a grey area, open to abuse so I avoid it like the plague. You can let another driver pass you only to repass them where it really counts.

I wish the races were longer in LFS, 30 minute races would help people develop tactics, see where the other guy is slower and exploit it...etc.

But It seems everyone wants instant gratification these days.

Good points. I would love longer races, BUT I only get to race in my lunch for 30 mins, maybe an hour. So I would miss out on a lot of races if they were that long.

Barge passing... awesome, that's my response for future on track debate
Make room! Leave space!
yeager
S3 licensed
NO!

I'm a bit sick of people complaining because I don't leave them enough room to pass me. I'm RACING you, i'm not in the game of LEAVING you any room. If there IS room to pass, then make the pass. Do I try and minimise the space around my car when you are behind me trying to get past? Hell yes... I race by these rules, feel free to debate.
  • If you are behind me, I will close my racing line tighter to reduce the space between me and the line which I think you want to pass me. This may slow us both down, but it keeps me ahead.
  • I WON'T try and hit you, I am actively trying to avoid hitting you because that will impede my race. However I will close this space safely and BEFORE you occupy it.
  • If you continue to drive into a space which no longer exists, for example putting your car into a position where you have no other option due to lack of grip or inability to slow down, to hit me. That is NOT my fault.
  • I won't swerve all over the racing line but I will make one decisive action, clear of your car, to indicate my intent to protect my line.
  • I will be aggressive. I will not give you plenty of room to slide up alongside and pass me. But I will also be predictable...
  • Force me to make an error without crashing us both out of the race. It is totally possible to second guess my line and without smashing into me, force me deep into a corner and therefore take a wider line.
  • I will do everything I can to avoid you AND continue to race. I have to make sensible judgment to maintain this. If we are side by side going into a corner, I have to give way if you are AHEAD or have LEAD TRACK POSITION, if not, I will turn into that corner as safely as I can whilst maintaining as much race speed as possible. I expect you to do the same...
  • The odd nudge, bump and scraping of doors is for me, totally acceptable. This happens in real life and is often worse on LFS due to network lag and poor collision detection. So I expect some contact and you should to.
So NO people, I won't be giving you masses of room to get past me, even if you are faster. Especially if you are faster, I am going drive defensively as much as possible to maintain my current race position... If you want to get past, here is a novel idea...

RACE ME

Quote from rockclan :What this smart young man says.

And i'm sure most of you who think that "quality takes a lot of time" have not actually worked in the real world of business.

Yes, a good product takes a huge amount of effort. From lots of development and test cycles to careful design and scoping.

But quality of product is useless without good customer relationships and timing of releases. In the dot com boom of the late 90's, early 00's, I saw many companies with the most amazing technological ideas totally and utterly fail due to terrible customer support, poor sales strategies and awful management.

To be honest, I am totally happy with the current version, a new release would be a laugh and it would be nice to get some improvements and fixes. But i'm amazed at how the communication is being handled... I suppose I should be emailing the guys directly offering help and assistance, but i've tried that in the past and know others have to no avail...

Come on chaps... give up at least a paragraph or two on what's going on. Ease the pain for some people here
