Correction:

Some cars measure the speed at the differential, some at the gearbox, some at the driving wheels, and some from the non-driven wheels. ( Correction from below : sometimes in a combination of these to allow for detecting wheel spin, probably for traction control technology)

I have a GPS speedometer which measures the speed without being mechanically attached to the car.

Please research and reference before making generalised claims.

Additionally - if you want to win races, you have to be both smooth and fast, neither of which are attainable by consulting the Speedometer. Driving should be anticipated control, not reacted responses.

I may check my pressures, temperatures and fuel on the dash once per lap on the straight to check for mechanical symptoms of failure, but gear changing should be done by anticipation and listening to your engine.

Speed is not important, what is important is when you accelerate, when you brake (and how hard), and how you turn (while braking and accelerating), if you do all those right, you'll have the shortest lap time, regardless of what your speedometer may "tell" you, wherever it gets its information from.

Pointless hack, sigh, bored kids are such a liability, they need to get a wheel and a license!

Really excellent video, a good watch, and a million times better than anything that's on channels 1-5 99% of the time in the UK!!!

Thank you very much indeed for doing such a 1st place job.

I'm certain that in some case Tristan is correct, as I know for a fact my Mk4 Vauxhall Astra cuts off fuel during prolonged engine breaking, and I wanted to turn it off for the reason he stated above, for the same reason my motorcycle carburation is set up how it is, detailed below.

You shouldn't coast down hill as you have comparatively little control over your vehicle.

Break pads are cheaper to replace than engine parts so I tend to brake using the breaks more than using my engine to slow the car.

I have a high idle on my motorcycle because it is highly tuned and has been known to have pre-ignition issues (usually from lean mixture and overly high running temps), the extra fuel cools the cylinder (there isn't enough fuel to ignite with any real expansive force, most of it just gets thrown unburnt into the exhaust system) and also leads to backfires/burbling exhaust on lift off which I quite like. Being a two stroke, more fuel means more oil getting to the engine and this helps reliability, I'm bored of replacing scorched pistons.

Usually in a car I drive between 3-5 thou rpm, it ensures good power delivery, and you don't need to boot the loud pedal every time you want a few extra mph. Driving under 2500rpm (unless you're driving a diesel) strains the engine (evident in the running in period where 30mph in 5th, like every sodding uk driver seems to do, is forbidden), similarly ragging it everywhere does the same thing (yes, I am talking to you, mr 1.1 106 with your foot flat on the floor in second gear EVERY SECOND OF EVERY DAY, enjoy those stretched con-rods!).

My bike on the other hand, which requires 8-14 thou rpm for average driving, is almost devoid of torque. If I really want to get up to speed in a dangerous situation i have been known to scream it to 15,500rpm.... it doesn't sound all that pretty, and I wouldn't imagine it does my fuel consumption much good.....

My set up is roughly similar to Becky's.

The people who ran my introduction to programming course advised that we found something far away to look at every hour or so to avoid doing your eyes in staring at the code for day after day.....

I don't even see the code anymore... all I see is.... a poor quality matrix-esque screen saver!!

Get a haynes manual, a decent tool kit, and spend hours repairing, replacing, and bodging every thing that brakes/falls off/weares through/rusts itself silly on the road side in all manner of awful weather conditions.... but that's because I do over 20,000 miles a year.

That's what I do with my 16 year old two stroke motorcycle... it's on piston number six at the moment! On the plus side, it's bloody quick (thanks to a great deal of port polishing, valve chamfering etc. etc.), costs nothing considering, and allows me to get everywhere I need to for the most part while still scrimping and saving for a 300zx 2+2 Twin Turbo when my next years no claims comes in!

Seriously though, anything that doesn't involve complex valve trains pr gearbox and clutch things I do myself on any vehicle. It's more fun to spend the time working on the car than get overtime at work to pay for someone else to do a slightly less attentive job...

Ok thanks very much, bloody annoying... I want to splash on a DFP but I'm saving for a 300zxTT... and I need all the cash I can lay my hands on, selling most of what I own!! I shall have to hope the G25 release puts an abundance of cheap DFP's on eBay!

My avatar is stolen from www.sniffpetrol.com, a hilarious online motoring magazine, each month they release a new one, they've been releasing a new caption from that picture ever since they found it!

I think if you're going to post these on a forum full of registered users you may well have to get used to the flames.

Most of the dedicated racer's here arn't interested in new cars, the attraction is in the competition and skill required racing against others, not something than can be done with these tweaked cars. That's why the closest racing you'll see is in single make/model homogenated series, like the Clio cup for example.

I appreciate you've speant a good long while getting these right, which is good, but I would ask you to be more than a little polite about responding to those who don't care for "the right weight distro", gear ratio's etc. Calling people this that an the other isn't going to do anything but get you banned, no matter how condecending they may be.
does anyone else have this problem?

Gear question:

I'm running a rubbish Logitech Driving Force (not the pro) wheel, do any other drivers experience it or LFS "not letting you" change gears, for example, although the paddles seem to do everything normally, if the tyres are under high load it wont allow me to change gear when I pull on the paddle, only afterward when i've straightened up, or if I apply a seconds opposite lock... I've got all the driving aids turned off except auto clutch.

I understand I should already be in the right gear for the corner before entering it, but I'm not very good at LFS (yet), and one of the long sweeping fast turns after the aston straight in any of the cars that have both power and downforce grip require me to twitch the steering wheel left to change up a gear before resuming my right lock degree once more.

Does anyone else have experience of this "inability to shift during cornering"?

(I know it wouldn't be done much in a racing situation, except perhaps turn one, but I find it makes it very hard for me to correct mistakes).

I'd like the different muffler noise, if we get 5.1 at all you could have the backbox noise coming only from the rear speakers, and the engine from in front, although that wouldn't be the case for the open wheelers!

I agree with most of what's being said, I never feel like the engine is really working, there's no bite to the sound, and none of the "roughness" to it, especially on lift off. If I lift off at 8000rpm my exhaust splutters at me and occasionally backfires a little, this is due to the rich fueling required to stop it from pre-igniting at the current level of tuning.

This will probably be improved when the torque curves are sorted out, the current curves are completely smooth, and don't have peaks in the right places due to the fact they are calculated by a single equation, rather than the thousands of factors including fueling calibration found in real life dyno read outs. Plus the boost model hasn't recieved much attention yet.

There does need to be more samples in my opinion. The transmission is currently silent for example. On the other hand sounds are pretty low priority.
