I'll be awaiting the release, looks excellent

That's an OPTIMISTIC entry speed, and a really EARLY apex.

Sounds prime for my third year project at university...

You are right, as per usual, and because you're a moderator.

I'm still curious though, always curious...

Sorry if all the questions sounded like that annoying dick who's always there asking questions that are actually demonstrations that I know the answer teachers pet style... I'd just like to know a little more about LFS, and the bits I don't quite get.

In a perfectly modeled world perhaps, but I would class it in the same category as collision exploits, taking advantage in an unrealistic manner due to a deficit in real world penalty...

oh, and I couldn't think of a better place to put the post.
Ai & Lfs

Does anyone know how the .knw files are generated? or how to edit them?

Also, does anyone know of a way to run LFS without any graphics, and at high speed?

It's just if either of these were available, I was thinking about evolving some AI's using either a genetic algorithm, A* search, or a neural net...

I would imagine the AI is coded to with mathmatical evaluations which put preference toward late apex's, getting as close to other cars as possible without touching them, fast exit speeds etc?

It would then estimate a result from a given input between steering throttle brake etc, and pick the one which has best predicted fit for the heuristic evaluation...?

am I anywhere near along the right lines here?

does anyone even know!?

must everything i say be a question?!!
Turbo Cars and Brakes

I was playing around with the turbo cars today, having been reading up on Rally Technology.

Currently there's no system that stops you simply glueing the throttle down, and then cranking the braking force untill you can lock the wheels at full power in first gear...

The advantage of this is that you're always on boost as you come off the brakes, and maximum power is developed instantly, with zero spool time.

The inspiration for doing this came from the on throttle braking used by some rally drivers before the invention of the bang bang anti lag system, it puts great strain on the brakes, but if you're well within their capacity, can give an advantage.

Not sure if anyone cares as it's very obscure and hard to drive with, but there it is.

thought I'd stick it out in the open, naturally when brake fade has its development time, in due course, this wont be a problem, but until then, it could perhaps be considered a cheat.

Brilliant!!!!!!!

I write AI programs in Java, and this will save me a lot of work!

thank you so much!

any car with carb based throttle will prduce a louder more open noise when the throttle flaps are opened with the pedal down when the engine is turning, regardless of the cylinders firing,

this is because it varies the amount of resistance to air being sucked in, and as such changes the noise.

it's correct, but odd if you've never heard it in real life, I can make a video of this on my motorbike if you would like.

Thank you for bringing this to us, I enjoyed it a great deal.

Why is it always the people with their camera taped in the car who start going down the grid from the start...

I guess they must have really heavy camera's, or spend too much time on youtube and not enough racing!!

LMAFAO at the grumpy stock hatch driver footage, so funny, absolutely wet myself.

Pretty much everything artificial intelligence is based on search, the computer tries a lot of things and uses some heuristic function to estimate whether the direction its going in will lead to the goal state, i.e the fastest lap.

I think the reason the AI are limited at the moment is to keep cpu requirements reasonable. They could quite probably become ludicrously fast within their own representation of the world, by feeding them more data, and building in penalties added to the estimation for contact with other cars etc.

It would even be technically possible to produce some very human like behavior, with a few very simple additional rules to manipulate the search direction, especially when interaction with other cars is involved. This all costs time and cpu power to implement though, so I wouldn't hold your breath. Just look at the way ants work together, with just a set of very few simple rules "find food", "hord", "don't stray further than x from the next ant", "run like crap if you see an anteater", throw them all in together, you get complex behavior out the other end.

Does anyone know if the developers have considered using a neural net to run the AIs?

I would be interested to know whether the computer knows how well it's doing that by guaging that lap time, or the time to complete a section.

I'm a Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence student at Sussex university by the way, in case anyone wondered why I know anything about it.

I have a mordaunt short surround sound system, with cambridge audio amplification, voice comes from a bluetooth headset for a mobile phone, paired as a normal headset via my bluetooth software, works a bloody treat, fits inside a helmet....

I can't believe I have publically confessed to playing lfs with a helmet on....

To be honest, if you really loved driving all that much, wouldn't you be busy driving rather than posting on forums?

Besides, this topic is a foregone conclusion, too many people get angry about driving on the road in a manner that is not 100% legal.

If you want to enjoy driving, buy something rear wheel drive, far more involving.

So far, I think I agree with tristan's post the most, spirited driving on a road no-one else is using is one thing, but those are country roads, believe it or not, we have corners outside the city here in England.

You also reference your ability to navigate traffic at high speed, while you may think this impressive, when you own a motorbike, you'll treat it as the norm, a gap 10 cars away is regularly a goal, it's not impressive, it's just called looking ahead.

Most importantly, no-one cares what you think you are, because there's a good chance you're wrong, a lot of people are. If you really are as good as you say, get picked up by a racing team, they'll pay you to drive fast, on real roads, with a real car.

Perhaps we should arrange a group buy on the forum, get 2000 people to chip in 20 quid a piece, buy the rights ourselves, and give them to the developers for christmas.

Flat shifting does not necessarily damage the clutch, some cars it wont, some cars it will heat it up enough to glaze over the friction plates and will slip more than usual, othertimes it'll destroy itself in a horrendous metal mincemeat.... just to make sure people know what's what.

It varies which shaulder it looks over depending on where you're steering, and also,

if you push the look left button, followed by the look back button, or indeed the look right button, it looks over your left shaulder, and,

if you push the right look button, then either of the other to, it looks over your right shaulder.

i think.

beat this.

bout 50 seconds in trying to drift the fo8, thought i'd move up as i can now drift the fox, i think it's good for car control to learn.

blgp reverse, come down towards the s config before the straight, and essentially i do an entire barrel roll before landing back on the wheels perfectly!

something about half rolling and then letting one slick tag the ground with my foot planted in 3rd gear gave it just the right amount of rotation!

spot on

Cambridge Audio Azur 640a Amplifier.
Mordaunt Short 504 floor standers all round, Mordaunt short subwoofer.
Soundcard from china, external aluminium thing but most importantly with DIGITAL AUDIO OUT.

the only way to eliminate the stupid humming every pc dumps into its sound card is by digital out, in a device which is far enough away from all the power supply to not get buggered around with.

(for those who are interested i also have a REGA record deck, you havn't heard music till you've heard mint vinyl on a MC stylus record deck.

Very nice indeed!

Can I request a section of Tchaikovsky's "Polonaise" for the round eight blackwood rally x teaser?

Love this racing series, and classical music too? bliss.
