That's a really interested insight into how LFS is adding a great many more complexities to the sound system. I'm impressed by it more than anything!

Although there'll be a swarm of "K&N Induction Kit" engine files released, essentially just by cranking the air intake noise. ha.

I love software still in development, good getting better is much more entertaining.
Which game has the best nordschleife Track?

So I'm planning a trip to the nordschleife late summer, and, I want to know the track as best I can before I get there.

I'm not interested in whether anyone thinks this will or wont help, so don't bother telling me, because I know it wont. But it sounds like fun. So, suggestions?

I think we could all supply names in advance, so perhaps we could cut down the registering of drivers, and equipment overview.

I'm sure most of are aware that you shouldn't slam your feet on the pedals, or wrench the steering wheel unduely, nor apply unnecessary force to the shifter mechanisms. I wouldn't imagine anyone stupid enough to try and eat or drink while attempting to win a race either...

Other than that it sounds good

Would it be possible to atleast be sure for LFS that we have at the very minimum, all of team inferno's setups available on each rig? I don't fancy my chances winning anything with RACE_S.

I would also quite like to have all the combo's we will be using set up in advance, so there's no quibbling about it, and I can get some practice in, or I'm just going to lose. Perhaps this can be done by democratic vote?

I hope these suggestions are useful.

edit:
I would be open to a just LFS session also.

I raced at the LRF server last night.

I had a really good time.

(Watch out for the Muroc team though...)

Does anyone else thing the engines in LFS are remarkably powerful considering their size?

This officially makes SamH the most powerful person on the planet, not only is he a forum moderator, STCC second in command, STCC Admin, and Wrecker Barricade Admin...

Potentially the next person to answer back to Minor Deity SamH could recieve a ban from the STCC server forums, this forum, and the barricade would ban him from enough LFS servers to give him a one month ban from LFS online entirely...

Yikes!

BTW - I didn't mean to be negative about the user bars, they're really good, but I suck royally with FWD, so I can't get past copper, hence to embaressed to post my own, I'd post Bean0's! Dynamic text application is well beyond my programming ability for web aps, I'm a Java programmer, if it's not an object, I don't understand!

I was under the impression the STCC was taking a break over christmas, with just the oval special event to keep it ticking over, and that there would be a Blackwood GP REV race at the end of this month, so next broadcast being 3rd quater of february?

I sincerely hope it isn't over, I really enjoyed it.

As for the friction between racing teams? Everyone part of a team is very competative by nature, just as there is between racers there is between teams. No-one said you had to be nice to another team, you've paid for a server, to do with as you wish...

Nothing to stop you pretending to have the same license as the number one atm tho is there!

Perhaps you could add a "User Name" on the image as well?

The tyres are never really cold cold though are they, they're part heated, as if by tyre warmers before you get in the car...?

That's quite a debate that's turned up!

I didn't mean so much the current lessons in their entirety, but, making a certain set mandatory, such as "I can follow a car round the track going slightly slower than me without smashing into the back of it, and punting them out the race". One explaining rear wheel drive, front wheel drive, the correct procedure in turn one, you get the idea.

I know these are all part of the forum section, but a lot of racers never even get to the forum within the first few months of racing! I think at the very least a forced video, and a one lap check what you've learnt would be good for everyone. With the current AI, anyone who can't keep up with them doesn't really deserve to be on a public server anyway, they're simply going to get themselves a burning banana for ruining other peoples races, which causes friction between racers, and there's enough of that already.

I know everyone's got a right to the content, but, in terms of realism, they do not let 8 year olds drive DTM cars, for a reason, because they'll crash it very quickly, unless they get some practice, so force a little practice, only a few laps, away from races other people care about.

Seeing as they look the "coolest" the first thing any driver who's just forked out £24 is going to do is jump in the GTR cars, and if they're under 15, is jump on the conedodgers server, because it's got cool cars and lots of people, fire up RACE_S, and obliterate everyone, assuming they get off the line alright.

Just because I've paid £24, doesn't entitle me to shunt all and sundry off the track, wasting other peoples £24, on the premise that I don't know what I'm doing.

All you people who've said no, how long would it take you to beat the AI six times, one lap each, and watch a few quick videos?

I don't want to keep people off the servers, I just want to educate them. I've done all the training, and I'm still atleast a second off the pace most races, because the training is quick and easy, if I can beath the AI's, I'm sure everyone else can.

I'd say that's alright for a first effort.

I do wonder though sometimes Shaun, you don't actually like racing do you?
LFS Lessons and early braking.

I would like to see a lesson in the LFS lessons section where you have to stay behind the car infront, close to, without touching, for a lap.

I think this would be a useful skill, and stop people tapping people if they try and brake early, either for tyre saving, or whatever reasons.

I also think the LFS lessons should be mandatory before it enables Online Multiplayer.

Naturally how far you've got would have to be recorded by LFSW, so when you re-install you don't have to do it all again.

Any opinions?

@bbman

I don't like night racing either, but that isn't to say that the endurance leagues might like it for 24hr races.

Kev - you owe me a new pair of underpants, and possibly an office chair for making me pmsl.
The problem with LFS is:

The physics are good, and give a rewarding drive even in this alpha stage.

This means there will always be an influx of people who don't want to be race drivers, but want to play driving games that are harder and more involving than Need for Speed Carbon etc.

So before you condemn ricers, and people with neons and stuff, they may very well still like driving, they just like those things as well.

Everything is better with more realistic physics, which is why we have so many drifters who use Live for Speed also. I don't care much for drifting, I want to race cars, in the real world mainly, but while I'm saving, LFS is a great cheap way to do something as close as possible in the evenings.

So, thanks for the Live for Speed, sat here stuck away from work without if for a few nights, I realise how much I like to use it!

PS - I put this in the off topic section because it's not really worth much attention, so I thought I'd stick it here anyway. (I'm bored, I'm stuck working away from home, and I can't play LFS here, so, i mill about the forum doing not a lot)

It would obviously have to be split depending on the tracks, and server selectable, hence the need for RSS feeds, as they are location based, the one I linked to is for southern UK, and is taken from a weather station, rather than a prediction, so it's nice and accurate.

I was also thinking, eventually, you could tick box for real time lighting, that matched the sunrise and set levels for that country.

I understand your reluncancy for canned effects, the merit for calculation of everything is shown with the difference between LFS's physics and everything else i've had the pleasure of trying.

My point was that for a few extra lines of code, and no issues with the hot laps etc, Any impact with a force great enough to bend the engine compartment to half its size, and almost past the front wheels, (front engined cars only, i should've mentioned that.), would definately stop the engine, so it's safe to code in at such a high threshold without worrying it'll happen without due cause (as often happens with canned effects).

I also feel this could help cut down on wreckers, who can drive around the track with a car bent over double, and still propel themselves into the path of on coming cars.

If you hit something with enough force to cause a 5g+ force towards the rear of the car, you've hit the front of the car hard enough to stop the engine, because you've almost certainly bent it out of its mountings.

I know it's not finished, but this is compatable for hotlaps as no hotlap would ever enter that kind of g force without being hlvc invalid, and it's a reasonably easy code to develop, as half of it exists as the pit lane speed checking thing.

Besides, this is an improvements thread, what's the point in having this place to dream if everyone just gets told to shut up and wait?

for genuinly useful suggestions on current development we have a test patch thread, this place is for people to discuss what they like to talk about up and coming, without spamming the devs test patch threads.

I would agree with the tyre temperatures reacting too slowly, I have a pyrometer for setting up before going on the track, and the surface temperature (near to surface), 1mm depth with spikey bit to measure temp, varies from the exit of one corner if you stop the car and measure, to the end of the straight immediately after the corner.

The current temps are better than any other game i've come accross, but they still only give a tyre temperature, rather than the surface you're actually running on. That would obviously change temperature based on the temp of the tyre as a whole, so hot tyres warm faster on the surface during the corner.

To clarify, we need a tyre temp, and a tyre surface temp, the tyre temp leaches temp off the surface into the tyre material itself, and off the brakes also, warming it, the hotter the tyre material, the quicker the surface temperature will heat up during cornering, and the slower it cools down on the straights.

off topic:

The TVR sagaris originally had those holes open to aid in brake cooling and aerodynamics, however, when it rained, they threw an unbelievably large amount of road surface & oil muck onto the windshield, so then they made them out of clear plastic, to look good without the muck, but then that just got covered with dirt too, so they filled them in, and decided to just forget about it.

I was thinking, if LFS could detect a drop in real speed (not indicated), as it does for the pit lane speed, conducive to a 4g+ decelleration, it could interpret this as a crash, and cut the engine?

I think this would add a greater sense of immersion when you crash the car.

I know this will be far cooler once weather effects are implemented, but, I'd really like it if the clear and overcast functions could be synched on server with an RSS weather feed for a similar locaiton in real life.

using something like this perhaps?
