Quote from sinbad :The guy going backwards did a good job for a while, also saw this one which reminded me of UFR too

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Lt1CRjx6pxM

that guy was terrible, his steering movements are jerky, unsure, and all over the place, and, i know the shift is a week long on those cars, but he was ramming it all over the place, no wonder he binned it!

Seems to be a theme for Evo's :

and just for a laugh:

this is a familier sight on LFS tracks... oh, and look out for the guy practicing his drifting half way though!

I tried so hard not to bring up a specific car, but the reasons for a class of car.... and then chuffff.... the whole suggestion goes back to the pit requests.

Not unexpected tbh

I'm gonna have to borrow someones caterham in real life if bob don't release the subject of his teasin' pronto, and the real world doesn't want that.

Putting your stuff up on the internet is pretty much an invitation to have it raped.

In ontopic news, the video is good.

to be honest, I think you pretty much covered it with the first 4 words .

We are getting the lx8 though...? Bob teased out some pics etc to shut up some progress requests... so we'll have our light RWD nutbar car....

http://lfs.thefloatingwidget.net/pics/lx8evil.JPG

There's no reason to drive the lx4 or lx6 once we have the lx8 if there's no need for "toned down nanny cars". By logical extension, anything but the BF1 with the traction control is a nanny car too.

You don't need to dish out the virtues of RWD to me, I've got one, and I kart, and they're both brilliant.

But I also watch top gear. One of the most popular shows around, and they say driving one of those things is brilliant. While I know they're not the most technical minded of people, I'm inclined to listen to someone suggesting "this is great fun".

The traction control is there on these monsters in real life, I figured it might be nice to have it there in LFS, I thought it might keep n00bs from spinning out on the start line while the pro's can leave it off and get on with what they do....

Lamborghini Murcielago R-GT, FXX, Veyron and Reventon were what I was thinking about while writing this thread. It just seems like every other game has some sort of nut-bar engined monster with air conditioning kicking about, and these are things I would love to own in real life, so naturally I want them in lfs.

TC was just an afterthought to make it safe to put on the track with people who haven't practiced before going online.

+1 on the 90s cars, we have a few of those in GTR form already by the looks of it though... early 90s rally cars perhaps!?

Older lighter cars are generally better, but, if you just wanted light, you'd go for a single seater or a Caterham... I love those too, but I havn't driven anything better than an f430, and I want to know what better than that is like racing!
Hypercar Reasoning

I know various ferrari's etc have probably been suggested over and over, but, I wanted to put forward some reasoning. These are my reasons why we might want a hyper car variation in lfs. the improvement suggestions forum is here to keep the flood of car requests and requests for the blindingly obivous off the main forum, so if they're allowed, I hope you can tollerate this lot too:

The case for a hyper car.

I was thinking to myself should I win the lottery, I would most definately buy some sort of F430 Scuderia, or if I really won, a Reventon or a Veyron. The thing I was thinking is, you can't really race those cars, aside from a gentle cock around in a track day, because, repairing them is pretty impossible, and they cost so much, and are of such rarity and beauty, only a complete eedjit would drive it in a manor leading to its broken-ness.

So this is why they sit in museums and peoples garages etc. Fair enough.

Live for speed has no drawbacks on cars with repair/fuel/purchase costs...

I put forward the need for something around 6 litres, about 600bhp, and 500lb-ft, 1600kg ish stunning bodywork, advanced driving "aids" (read on, more stop you spinning like a top but prevent you from being more than 2s close to the pace). AWD, maximum 20% power to front wheels. With driving aids off, 100% RWD.

Once the engine modelling has been sorted, there will be naturally be a giant difference in the behaviours of the engine - one in which the experience of driving something that powerful naturally aspirated, will be truly excellent.

I was also thinking about the gadgetry present in all of these top end cars. I feel the traction control systems (road, sport, race, off) could prove a good introduction for newer drivers to fast cars with no (significant - read wings) downforce, the traction control would have to be realistic in how early it starts shuffling torque around, and we would need proper TC making use of braking individual wheels, as well as the "power cut" stuff we have now. This would allow the less competant drivers in the field to provide some small competition to the faster drivers, who can squeeze the last of the car by switch off the TC (tc probably knocking 2s off the pace on an average lap compared to the front of the pack, but allowing slower drivers to be faster than they would normally be, so they don't hold up the field).

Their light weight, massively wide tyres, and rediculous speed would breed interesting racing tactics.

We don't have a truly mid-engined car.

Lastly, there's the potential for it to look incredible. I know looks are not everything, but, if they didn't have some input, there wouldn't be any point in making the fz5 look as nice as it does. Nor would PGR4 sell as much as it does if it was using ugly cars, naff braketurn physics aside.

s'only the baby 2.5 model sadly ... but it does me for the gatwick brighton runs and the odd cock about.

A bike can be ridden or driven. Ride sounds too passive to me, so I prefer driven.

Operate, race, drive, ride, rag the nips off, doesn't matter what you call it, it's still a blinding laugh on 2 wheels, especially knee down.

I do have a motorbike license, I did own the bike that I'm sitting on in that picture. I wasn't "on" that beer, I was drinking that beer.

What precisely was your point!?

lol - I suppose you mean drink and drive, we'd set up camp for the night, so I thought I'd have a beer by lake genever. I've never driven or ridden with the chance of there being alcohol in my blood stream. Mainly because of the insurance quotes afterwards, and the cost of ANOTHER driving test.

An Asus, but I can't remember the model name. I can't find anything with that description anywhere on my OS or BIOS to adjust.

I'm pretty certain my temps are ok, having put excessive cooling on and it making no difference, and checked the temps with means other than the motherboard info, plus a good and recent re-application of the heat conductive paste.

I would've thought other stressful things would kill it just as good if it was heat related.

That's a very good point, I'll do that saturday morning before work if I can get up early enough. I'll swap a go in my e46 for a psu to test with for a couple of hours! (sussex/surrey)

Same pc I've had for the last 2 years now, no changes physically, I may have swapped some drivers out or something... but my initial attempts at solving the problem involved formatting the HDD and installing xp from scratch (all my documents/media are on external hard drive arrays, so its not much hassle to rebuild), since then, and several more rebuilds later, the problem has remained.

I'll try and find someone to borrow one off to swap out and test, I've got a 450W in there atm I think, got a feeling its a thermaltake one or something, so would've thought it ok.... trouble is, half the bloody people in my degree all use mac laptop jobbies, certainly all the people I tollerate between lectures! can't borrow anything off them... I don't like using them myself.

tongey - thanks for the motivation, i look forward to the sheer hell, lol.

hope the halloween race went ok, i wanted to join, but, half a race is only none of the fun.

ah right....

think it'll have to wait then! it doesn't make sense to buy another cpu of the same spec, if i'm going to do that i might as well upgrade and have done with it, i'm runnin' out of power for the more recent stuff as it is.

thank you for your info, much appreciated

Thanks for the response Jakg,

I tried taking the case off and whacking a desk fan on "3" facing directly into the case at a distance of about a foot, no change in result.

Passed the memtest no problem (used one from some fancy benchmarking test suite, i can't remember the name), and an 8 hour overnight stress test, no overheating, no problems. CPU temperatures all stay miles below the manufacturers specs, about 48 degrees c, the memory doesn't appear to get overly warm either.

Even my neural net simulation research left running for hours on end has yet to crash it the same way it does with LFS.

I get the impression I'm not going to be able to fix this without replacing things and never knowing what the problem actually was. I was just hoping someone has already done the hard part and knows what I need to replace... a new computer won't be within my financial reach till I've been graduated and employed for a while!
Hard Reset when playing LFS

I'm not expecting much to come from this, but I thought I'd ask around.

When I play LFS, after about 8 laps, my PC will hard-reset with zero warning.

It does this so well, that it doesn't even realise its crashed, it just wakes up as if nothings happened, nothing in the event log, no messages, zilch.

It only does this while playing LFS, but I've no crash address, nothing. It simply goes immediately from LFS to the boot screen, and boots up as per normal.

It happily plays HL2Ep2 so I can't see it just being a stress thing...

AMD 3200

radeon ra5500 - I'm using older graphics drivers because the new ones black screen source games for some reason :S

1gb reasonably quality DDR in two channels

piles of disk space, no other programs running

I'm a Bsc. computer science student, and, this has me baffled.

I was only joking! It's the smart time to have a race, sadly, LFS seems to hard=reset my miserable computer after 6-8 laps, even after a rebuild, otherwise I'd gladly join. Even if you don't have a recorder, the Dave channel will repeat it every hour on the hour for the rest of the week anyway.

hope its a good one
