Quote from ACCAkut :I wonder how different the public reaction in the US would be if the responsible company were named US Petrol instead of British

*saw a short report showing US citizens being asked about it on the streets, hang them in public was one of the more gentle responses*

I love it when people take the view point of a single person/group - typically an outlier at that, and makes it sound like a general thing. I can't speak for the other large portions of US citizens, but I can say that isn't even close to a response I have. As you can read far back up, accidents happen. I don't think it matters who is to blame, because equipment fails, things go wrong. It's a fact of life.

Do I particularly enjoy the oceans turning black? No, but it is something that happens, has happened and will continue to happen with the demand that very close to the entire world puts on the oil resources.

I can't answer for bladegt, but I have 3 22" Acer monitors - and being a triple screen setup maybe it is something you'd be interested in hearing about.

I've never had any performance issues, but then again when I upgraded to the 3rd monitor I bought the best gpu at the time; GTX 280 which put a solid dent in the funds but was worth it. My secondary card is an 8800 GTS XXX. I can run LFS on fullest settings - not sure about the AA / AF settings as I don't pay much attention there - I may have 2x but I don't think it is very high.

In anycase; running a resolution of 5040x1050 (3x1680x1050) I get a solid ~70fps abuot 90% of the time. On the start grid it might get into the high-40s' / low-50's depending on track and number of cars - but even this is still very playable and not visually disruptive. The real killer here is the fill-rate of the huge screen buffer. And also using SoftTH which copies part of the buffer from the 280 to the 8800, but I have never had anything bad to say about it...

EDIT: I should mention that I haven't really messed with AA or other settings. And the difference in framerate from bladegt to mine is either CPU related, or possibly fill-rate related - both could be argued as LFS is a bit hefty on the CPU side.

Quote from RiGun :God damn it, the Starctaft 2 beta ended and there isn't even a post with updates on this, this saddens my soul, I bet Diablo III will be out before this new patch.

And your point? You can use it as another thing to play while you wait.

Well bear with the language barrier a bit? I can't quite get the true point of it myself, but I didn't get the impression it was to unlock LFS or perform any cracking of any sorts. . . Though, I am not sure what else is meant.

There is a way in the Ctrl-F / Alt-F options to assign that to a wheel button. And you can make the text say "/shift p" without the quotes, assign it to the wheel button of choice and there you go.

Quote from J@tko :Oh I did that once on CTRA, but a bit different. I was beeping my horn across the line as I was about to win, but I had the stupid clown one, so I pressed shift-h to change it, but caught shift-g which put me into auto gears and got me spectated about 50m from the line

That is full of fail! (And I'm not talking about spectated for shift-g...) You in first? All in good fun of course!

Oooh. That wouldn't be very fun. Typically I wait till the end of the race, save a replay then get screen-shots as desired. Also this allows you to pick the perfect camera shot.

There isn't a way within LFS, and I am not sure but it may/may not be possible with external things. JoyToKey could make it so you have a button on your wheel/gamepad do this for you.

I am not defending anyone, and not saying things could or could not be handled better. Honestly it's been quite some time since this started and all attempts thus far have failed? That is pretty crazy.

But to pretend that this stuff doesn't happen, and doesn't effect our blue and green little planet would be a lie. This isn't even the largest oil spill in history, according to wiki. Which was shocking to me. And yes those are horrifying pictures, but imagine all the fish and other animals, as well. It is a giant mess, but there it comes with the territory. Same with other sources of "power" that we have.

Even 'clean' energy of converting falling water into electricity has is disasters. Nuclear power plants have their own disasters and waste products, just as oil is using a non-renewable resource, that took millions? of years to be 'made'. Energy is not free, no matter where it comes from. Including these wind farms, hydrogen driven cars, solar energy. Everything has a price and long term effects that we may not know about now, and may not until a century or more after they become the main source of energy... But nothing is free.

I guess, we have to accept it for what it is, but it would surely be a lot better if instead of pointing fingers at everyone, we would instead hold hands and fix the damn problem. People blame the US, then turn and blame BP, then turn and blame the equipment manufacturers. Then you have the scientists and field experts saying that it might be leaking faster than BP claimed - well then so be it, use your expertise to come up with a valid gameplan on stopping the thing.

Sure politics, and money and other things are involved on a level I won't try to understand, and certainly won't pretend to understand. But standing around with fingers pointing elsewhere isn't solving anything. I do hope this get cleaned up with as minimal environmental disaster as possible. But to pretend things aren't effected is a lie, we effect things even when things are going well. Even if the ocean wasn't turning black we would be effecting the environment.

Am I a complete 'green' person, hell no. I won't try to claim I am. But I do _try_ to keep it in mind from time to time.

*Some of what I said was speculation on my part, although it all came from hear say at the very minimum.

The LFS automatic transmission won't shift that early. It waits till the car gets much closer to redline / optimal shift points... For racing purposes and not fuel economy like most real life cars.

As Bob said, you can shift when you want. It will make the acceleration slower as you are not within the cars powerband. But also remember most real cars with automatic transmissions will remain in lower gears and climb to higher RPMs when your foot is on the floor. So do consider a bit how that comes into play.

I'm not sure what the purpose of shifting that early would be during a race,

Just make some sacrifices somewhere else in your budget. Things are not free. LFS cost as much as going to the movies 2 or 3 times. Depending on how often you go to the movies, it will take a week, to a month - possibly a few months. If your not a movie goer, then find what you do spend something like $5 on, and make a small "sacrifice". Or the next time you buy Call of Duty, Need for Speed, or any other AAA title out there that is overly popular for ~5hr of "entertainment" think of buying LFS instead. It has been the cheapest entertainment I've ever bought... Played now for more than 4 years. Not too many products can I say that about. Well worth the tiny bit they ask for, and don't expect handouts; just make a small sacrifice where you spend your money, and use that to save and buy LFS.

Quote from roadrash17 :this is slightly avoiding the question at hand, but I feel I should mention it. Depending on the weight of the car, the car has a sweet spot for minimal gas usage. On lighter cars it is roughly 65 MPH and on heavier cars, such as trucks it is more towards 45 MPH iirc. So, the fuel usage is going to depend on the weight of the car for the most part.

You are right about the sweet spot, but it is more to do with resistance; air resistance, rolling resistance, friction in the transmission and all other resistances acting on the car/truck. Not it's mass. Granted it's mass plays a big role in getting to the sweet spot, but once there maintaining it is the same.

ctrl_f1 to f12 are valid.

If you used /button 0 ctrl_f1 you will effectively map button 0 on your gamepad/wheel you be the F1 bind. But 'button' is not for keyboard keys.

As petervsp said you can use JoyToKey, which is using an external thing like I mentioned in the options you have.

I don't think you can assign the F keys to keyboard keys. When you assign it to a button it is assigning it to a wheel/gamepad or something (which you can do via menus).

Your only options are to live with pressing F11/F12, use a wheel/gamepad or find some external way to make Q/E simulate into F11 or F12 presses.

I don't necessarily mean mentor with tricks and tips towards skateboarding. Just building a relationship and having a positive impact can be beneficial to both the "kid" and the mentor.

*I use the term kid, but teen, young adult and others can certainly fit.

@ Boris - Then don't stop. Keep at it I've gone to parks well after highschool/college etc and while it is different, the same enjoyment is there - likely with different, possibly younger people; but you can think of yourself as a mentor- assuming your effecting people in a positive way that is what matters. Try keeping someone from going too far over there experience level, or other things. Have fun.

More of a 'fruit booter' assuming your using it in a jokingly manner. Aggressive inline-skating for those that don't know the term. It is tossed by skateboarders, some as insult and others for fun - depending on tone. But I get along with a lot of skateboarders, afterall the two sports/activities are similar at some level, even if the equipment and techniques are different.

Anyways, my tip for you would be to find out if you enjoy it. If so, stick with it. And keep practicing. I can't give you tips on the board, but practicing constantly is the way to improve. Find what you like about it; half-pipe? ramps? flat ground perhaps? or rails? Many different styles suit different people. Do some research on proper equipment care, I got lucky and did this as a school project, but that research paid off that I would recommend doing it even if it isn't for school (assuming you enjoy and plan on doing this for some time). It helped me make wheels last longer, bearings faster and better and last longer etc. Of course, this stuff helped more with the long run.

My final tip, wear pads. Don't think it's stupid or care about the looks. When you can get back up roll after roll, you will appreciate it. Also you will tend to have a bit more confidence - of course don't go overboard with the confidence level. Stay within your limits, play it smart. Do try new things, even if inherently dangerous - it is a rush and can be done. But NEVER do them without working up the basic skills and have a solid understanding of what needs to be done. Even something you've done 1000's of times can still go wrong.

Quote from Xaid0n :Unlimited, but a speed cap @ 350Mb (cut to 25% speed on a useless 10Mbit line). Probably use 50-100Mb a day though.

If you browse the net for ~4hrs you likely exceed 100mb depending on browsing habits. A few 30s youtubes even on the lowest res (360?) will be about 50-80mb. My jaw dropped when I saw this. This information comes from what my ISP provided me for monitoring my daily limit. My other browsing habits were this forum, my e-mail (Yahoo!) which sends/recvs about 10 e-mails a day. But websites these days are rarely optimized in data sending from what they used to be. Common practice doesn't even offer low bandwidth versions anymore - which was sad.

Yea, I don't have a cap here. Although just a few weeks ago I was limitted to < 200mb a day... And just 'general' internet browsing with 3 to 5 youtube videos a day could push over the limit. (Which would lock the internet for 24 hours starting the time you went over, even if it was 5 min before the limit resets).

So not much, on that connection...

"Great!"

I mean to say, I am not extremely impressed. Sure congrats (sincerely) on jumping 26 cars, and holding the "record". But for the video, style of jump and a few other things I am not impressed much. I can't say it is terrible, but impressing me would be doing this in a sense that at least seems physically possible and safe. You just died. There is no way the driver survived that.

Also eliminate all variables with the record. Cars lining up on a server is first of all something that needs to be coordinated well (nice job on that) and can go wrong. Second people could have more / less gap between cars. I did notice you had them bumper to bumper, but even then there are discrepancies with them.

My suggestion is using stacks of tires aligned to the LFS layout grid. place four white, then a blue. Then four white ... so on...

The primary turn-off for me though is the act of killing yourself/driver. I get it is not real-life and nobody got hurt, but it breaks the illusion and thus immersion from the simulation, at least for me. So if I was to do this, I'd also have the rule that the driver must land on four tires, no rolling and remain under control (to some degree) when landing. IE- being able to stop the car.

As well as the 'launch' crashing into a car and using the lag/physics to boost up is another immersion break.

Anyways, those are my two-cents and feelings. Not a bad job though, so congrats.

Quote from tristancliffe :1st up a very steep hill and 5th on a level road...

Your correct but I was assuming a proper scientific method where we eliminate as many variables as possible - the only thing changing is the gear, and thus the speed. Try doing 5th up that same steep hill.

Quote :
And no, it's not as simple as "you use more fuel at lower RPM". Each injection pulse might be bigger (biggest at maximum torque in theory), but it's offset by less injections per second. You'll use the most fuel when doing the most work - accelerating hard, ploughing, climbing a steep hill or cruising at high speed.

Exactly what I was saying above with the engine at load or not. The resistances in 5th will be higher than those in first. Causing the engine to do more work.

If the engine always took in X fuel per rotation, and produced Y torque/energy from that fuel, then your speed in 5th would be limited to where the resistances match the energy output - regardless of engine speed... So at that point the engines would take the same amount of time until they ran out of fuel, but the one in 5th would not be running at 7000 rpm, leaving the question unanswered.
