I decided it was unnecessarily confrontational

It was important to me to separate [what you consider to be] the fundamental differences between RL-racers (or, more accurately, karters) and sim-racers.
Unless your proposed league/server is solely for karters, that seems pertinent to this topic.

e: @ AS: that's why I withdrew the comment. Incidentally, you're very defensive.

Just to clear this up, would I be right in supposing that:

1. in conventional tin-top / open-wheeler (?) / sim-racing, passing requires that the overtaking car be half-way along-side the target car before claiming the inside line, and that,

2. in karting / (?), the aggressive 'dive-bomb' technique prevails; i.e. it's clear to the driver with the outside line that he is being overtaken, and adjusts his line accordingly.

[Are there limits? Does the inside 'dive-bombing' car need to maintain its line to be a legitimate pass, or can it run wide? Please clarify.]

I totally understand your desire to race like-minded individuals. I don't want to race you, but I do wish you luck

Quote from ayrton senna 87 :like i said, this isnt a thread for discussing driving, or it will become an argument and get locked!

So calling 'most drivers' 'pussys' isn't likely to create an argument?

Quote from Intrepid :I am not condoning wrecking, but... <snip>

Funny that that should set off my karter alert
Quote from Ball Bearing Turbo :Not sure I agree totally with the elitist mentality.

If you don't know who you're dealing with you use something called caution and common sense. I would bet the bigger problem is the faster drivers thinking they own the track on a BEGINNER server. Wow, respect.

Brake 10m earlier if you have to, to ensure that you don't wreck someone you're not used to racing with. Good drivers are not the ones who can only race at one pace constantly, using muscle memory along with 4 others of the same caliber... The good drivers are the ones that can think outside their little world and realize that not every driver has mastered that combo, and use some thought to make sure they don't wreck someone else's race. If you rear end someone, it's your own fault - period. Just like IRL. If you're inches behind someone you haven't "scouted", why would you be on the same line going into a braking zone? That's not using your head at all. If you have skill, use a modified line and go around them when it's safe. It's not very bright to expect everyone (esp on a beginner server) to drive just like you.

Bingo There's no excuse for rear-ending someone.

Quote from Glenn67 :Interesting thought hadn't occured to me before.

In my day a teen simply couldn't afford such high powered cars, these days it's much too easy to get credit I guess

So making it compulsary to have comprehensive insurance would help prevent the current insanity. Failing that I'm sure the easy credit times we have now want last forever infact I predict less than 2 years

I know that it was a provision of my finance that my car be comprehensively insured and it's certainly no sports car

You don't need horsepower to kill yourself, though. A proper defensive driving course incorporated into the licensing process would be a good place to start.

I don't think it was actually a serious suggestion?
Brake late, brake wide, and watch your mirrors. If symptoms persist, start at the back

very cool
Interesting to see the XRT gets better economy in cruise mode than the XRG. Gearing I suppose :cyclops:
With the very notable exception of the FZ5(!), I would have thought the cruise figures are a bit low overall.

I thought you 'got wheel' Tak....??

Seems like a decent idea, though I haven't moused since demo

Shame you diluted your poll with that third option, huh

I've done over 110,000 kays since s1; I reckon I've raced every combo that interests me. Even a single new high-quality fantasy track, made by the community, would go a long way towards renewing my interest

Pissed I missed this [threee times fast]
That's about 4am for me, bugger.
If anyone a bit closer to home wants a run, I'll be there today about 6am GMT.

Quote from ATC Quicksilver :I tend to prefer several short races, or a 45 minute race. However I do like endurance racing and races of about 2 hours, but its a lot of hard work in the faster cars for me using a ps2 pad. I would find it easier using a ffb wheel, because the inputs are so tiny on my gamepad it takes a lot of concentration to drive smoothly.

same.... well, except for the gamepad bit

I prefer a couple of sprints, say 15 laps/20 minutes or so. An Aussie league does this, and does a reverse-finishing order for the second race.... good fun, although T1 is pretty interesting :yikes:
I do enjoy an enduro though, it just seems to take more time to get prepared.

When I'd race on a Redline server running LFS-Lapper, I found that it could add another dimension to the racing.

You'd have kind of 'split war': you could apply extra pressure - and perhaps even force an error - simply by setting a handful of quick splits. Get them watching their mirrors, or just break their spirit

I agree though, it can get a bit much, and it really needs to be configured properly.

Typical  Just when I was starting to enjoy this thread, along comes someone who's actually done tests, made pretty pie-charts, and er... examined molecular structures, composites... um....

OK, fair enough talking out of my arse

Worse to drive? Who said that?

Based on the footage I've seen, it seems that, the trade-off for a stickier tyre is a more sudden and dramatic loss of grip when it does 'let go'.

Of course, if you have any video evidence suggesting that LFS's slick modelling is indeed accurate, I'd be happy to eat my hat, yum
edit: sorry JTbo, kinda hijacked your thread.

Quote from JTbo :So can I, but that does not mean that they can't do it or that it would be awful difficult and defineatly does not mean that after a point tarmac should turn ice

I'd have thought that if it were possible for a modern open-wheeler to get the bum out 20 or 30 degrees in a controlled slide, there would be a goggle of youtube video replies by now.... <plug> because, as we all know, Youtube has all manner of crap!</plug>
Quote :At least few years ago tintop without downforce could get pretty sideways (in very controllable manner) with racing slicks, so I doubt that has been changed

Fair enough, I haven't seen that. You sure can get those RWD GTRs pretty damn sideways, though :cyclops:

@FredFlintstone

That video is pretty much a one-off from over twenty years ago. I'd hazard a guess and suggest that tyre technology has advanced somewhat since then.

The FO8 is based on a modern open-wheeler, with modern tyres, and you can do that on pretty much every corner. Fun, yep, forgiving and good for online racing, most definitely. Realistic.... I have my doubts.....
Quote from JTbo :Judging from video is like brushing teeths from arse, there is too much other things involved that can be a reason for such that you really can't judge from some race footage how tires should work or not.

I disagree I can see quite clearly when a car is in a lairy sideways drift in a video.

Quote from JTbo :Can't really say much for that, haven't driven such powerful open wheeler IRL so hard to say anything.

You haven't!? You really should get out more, then

I base my comment on open-wheeler video-footage. If such slip-angles were controllable - or even possible - I'd imagine we'd see a bit more of it, tyre-temps be damned.

Quote :Also I found it incredible easy to catch in most situations (using 550 degrees with dfp).

I think the problems you describe lie largely in LFS's tyre physics - they're just too forgiving. And I don't think it's limited to just the FO8 (which I love BTW ) - I really don't think such lairy powerslides are possible in anything with racing slicks
