Problem:
When given free-reign, some demo-user's upload 'inappropriate' avatars.
Problem:
Moderator of forum is [seen as] 'trigger-happy'.

Solution:
Strictly define 'inappropriate'. Allow demo-user's avatars. Unleash [alleged] 'trigger-happy' mod.

How's that for a slice of fried-gold!

I guess I missed the thread So, why exactly is it that demo-user's aren't allowed avatars? It a bandwidth thing, and not there to make them feel like second-class citizens..... right?

No vote from me, loaded poll.

(BTW, I thought you were generally doing pretty well, XCNuse)

By having throttle-cut set to off, you just do your own lifts. The less aids you have 'on', ultimately, the more control you have - much like doing your own 'blips' can control the car's attitude under brakes.

I think turbo cars benefit the most [from flat-shifting]; the turbo stays spooled up and on-boost. I haven't had it on since S1, and back then, there was a substantial differrence I suggest you do some tests

Quote from kurent :That is a dangerous mentality that leads to circular logic. If 3/4 people are murderers why shouldn't I be one too? And why are those 3/4 murderers? Because they think the same as you do!

That's all that needs to be said imho. Take pride in racing as clean and as hard as you can; occasionally, you'll meet others that share the same ideal.

Compelling way to incite discussion

A tie between FO8 on a medium-length Aston course :cyclops:, or MRT/FOX on a tighter (non-city ) course.

Quote from Scawen : A note about timing, it will definitely not be released fully this week, there is too much to do still.
Patch X release should be around Friday 11 May or a week later on Friday 18 May.

I started off playing LFS on dial-up, all the way through to S2. I learnt pretty quick that even the slightest rub could result in orbit, so I did whatever was necessary to avoid any contact. I still race that way; it's just habit, I s'pose.

I guess some contact doesn't hurt, but beware the catch-cry of the poor racer: "Rubbing is racing"! And this "I bumped him to move him off-line" etc. is garbage I reckon. Outsmart 'em and pressure 'em.

I agree, it works in both. But in what sport does pressure not play a part?

The point I was trying to make is that you can't rely on it so much to make up the positions you gifted away, while tippy-toeing through turn-one. As everyone else is so hungry, and less-inclined to fork it up, you're more pressured into creating those overtaking opportunities - even if it means getting forceful.

Of course, I could just be talking out of my :cat3:

(Just to clarify, this wasn't intended to be a discussion on how sim-racing differs from real-life racing - we've done that to death - but instead on how mentalities differ between the two.)
race-mentality: sim v RL

While we all love our sim-racing, there are certain things that just can't be simulated. Obvious examples: gravitational forces, gritty visuals with depth-perception, etc. We all acknowledge these sorts of things, and get on with it

But how does our state-of-mind differ from those that do it for real?

A few that occur to me:
  • The obvious - no consequences. If you miss your marker by 200 metres, only your ego (and the stupid bloody cat for getting in the stupid bloody way) is hurt.
  • A sort of oblique but important one - in pick-up races (and, to a lesser extent, league racing) you can count on the errors of others. If you pressure the bloke ahead enough, 9 times out of ten, he will make a mistake. If you sit back and lap comfortably, you can usually be assured of gaining spots. IRL, they have to push - within their limits, remember dot-point one - and take every chance they can get.
  • Team and financial pressure - OK, we may put pressure on ourselves to do well, and those in a team may feel obliged to finish well "for the team". But you can always disconnect, join a new team, or just kick the cat. Would you drive differently if you were racing for prize money - you need to finish well in order to continue with your season - or with the expectations and financial backing of a hard-working but ruthless team?
  • The knowledge that if you touch someone in an intimate place (say, turn-1), after the race, they may kick your...... cat.
Anything else? I think it'd be interesting to hear from some RL-racers too:cat3:

Quote from avaran : In some cars (UFR? for example) the gear whine seems to loop badly. It's not a constant whine. The sound will 'pop' or 'jump' rythmically. I'm not sure if my explanation makes sense.

If it's the sound I'm thinking of, it sounds like the motion tracker in Aliens.

The trick is to leave a bit up your sleeve

Though if I find myself 'on it' at a marker too far, I just straight-line it and close my eyes..... highly recommended

Quote from JamesK :Not really, I've always thought of computer games and poetry as being mutually exclusive

Yeah. It's kinda hard to read without giggling......

I tried a short story a long time ago. A merciful snippet:

It pushed him back into his seat, and jettisoned the car out of pit-lane and down the main straight. Second gear, third, fourth, approaching the first corner. He eased off early, dropped a gear and coasted lazily around the hairpin.

He got on it again, the engine lugging a little, and set up for the chicane. Fourth gear now, he eased slightly, turned sharply, and skipped over the left-most ripple-strip. Hard right, still in fourth, the car grazing the tyres placed on the inside. On it hard now.

Unfortunately, that was as good as it got Please continue

The only things I could see wrong with it was that you missed the apex on the corner exiting the straight, and again over the back of the circuit. Not much, but you're losing a tenth or two there. Though, on L1, you hit them It's what that place is all about tho - putting together the perfect lap

One other minor thing: use more of the exit (even a bit of grass) out of the last turn, and the turn before that, let the dif rotate the car more (imo).
