In terms of buying, I'll either go PAYG or SIM-free. Budget is £350ish.

Here's an interesting one for you...... using the HTC HD2 as an example!

If you try to buy the phone without a contract, it will cost you about £450+ from anywhere from O2 to play.com.

If I was going with that phone, I can buy it from O2 for £277 if I use someone who already has a contract with O2. Get them to phone them up and you can just buy a phone. Doesn't have to be the HD2. They are only allowed to buy one phone during the contract term from what I can gather. Might save some ££££

I saw the HTC HD2 in a shop yesterday. Really does look great and not as big as I thought it might be...... I presume that will play Flash on Opera wont it?

Also, I wonder what apps are like on the Win Mobile platform. Can't imagine they're a patch on the Apple or android stuff.... anyone any clue?

What network are you with?

I've been looking too at smartphones and the three that seem to be up there and non-iPhone are:

HTC HD2
Nokia N900
Samsung Omnia II
mention: Sony Xperia X10

There are quite a lot of new ones coming out in the 1st six months of 2010 too like the new iPhone, possibly the Creative Zii phone and probably a new HTC android phone. Also the google phone at some point.

Geez.. very decent then. I'm surprised you rate LFS above iRacing for force feedback. Personally, I get a lot more from the wheel in iRacing than i do in LFS. Each to their own i guess.

Quote from Postman Pat :I've only experienced the demos of these, and nKP gave me the biggest kick and when I tried the FBM straight afterwards I thought it felt like arcade-land. But i've never done it in RL.

Surely though, LFS is too easy (manageable over the limit) - anyone could hold a drift at first attempt in the XRG, and that's not real. In fact, I don't think I've ever lost a car in LFS without meeting something that wasn't road. Everything seems too progressive without danger of snapping or getting away completely. Surely iRacing's got that aspect better?

Not sure what wheel Tristan is using but I find the force feedback to be absolutely excellent in iRacing. I'd certainly not put LFS above iRacing in that area. NetKar I would put up at the top for actual FFB in terms of the feeling for a car with iRacing not that far behind.

Quote from SamH :Credit where it's due, Alan. The Mail's successfully put together an editorial based on reporting the facts, leaving political inferences out, and it's refreshing to see. It happens so rarely in journalism these days, even though it's a tenet of journalism.

Geez, that's almost a first. I better go look

Quote from brianmcd :That's some crazy high FFB. You're probably getting more force than feedback at those levels, depending on your windows settings.

I'm running 101% overall, everything else at 0, centering unchecked, and I use 5 FFB in the vette. It does have light steering, but if you raise the FFB too much you lose a lot of the actual feedback. I use 3-5 in game, depending on the car and how much caster is in the setup. This is on a G25.

I don't have a G25 so its just the DFP right now. I prefer to really feel things. With some cars it snaps too much like the indy car and I reduce it Same for the Lotus.

Quote from AlienT. :I unfortaunately have to agree with Spanks, I just can't get 'into' the C6R the way I would like to. The steering feels so light and it's tricky to know what the cars going to do next. Also the FOV in it, using 3 screens, is not great the view is very limited for me anyway.

Such a pity for me I wanted to love this car.

do you keep the same FFB setting for each car or do you tweak it for each?

For the C6R I find I have to add about 10 extra to the FFB setting in iRacing compared to say, the Mazda. I use 28 - 30 in the mazda depending on the track and 38 - 42 in the C6R.

Quote from marsden1002 :Hi all.

Ive just started to use LFS again, but my DFP wheel seams to change up too many gears. For example, from the start line ill hit gear up (behind the wheel) get to the end of 1st, hit gear up again and be in either 3rd or 4th gear.

Now, this causes me two problems: Slower lap times, and people nearly hitting me because im too slow from certain bits of the track?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I had a similar problem with my wheel a couple of years ago and it's just started to do it again. For me it's the little micro switch behind the plastic paddle. What I had to do is take the wheel off and replace the micro switch with a new one. This might not be the problem but it has been for me. If you need a switch, let me know as I have loads

Quote from Bokujishin :So finally the results
Well, I'm really happy to be the runner up (I will have a S2 license, at last!) but I am a bit disappointed, as tonix's design came out of nowhere, whereas you said in the competition thread that we had to post it...
However, I must admit it is very good and well designed too, our designs are quite similar but his looks more like the picture (that he of course tried to recreate). As I look at his design, I have a question to ask tonix: Did you use Solidworks for your design? Looking at the edges, it seems to be from a CAD software, but somehow does not look like Inventor (which I used).

Anyway, I am still pleased to have participated in this competition, as it enabled me to improve on the softwares I use, and also to create something for the first time. By the way, I'm going to remove my pdf from the other thread, and will give it to anyone who wants to build my cockpit, but I will still post images of what it looks like.

Thanks again for the competition, I'm looking forward to see the winner's cockpit built!
(and of course waiting for my license )

EDIT: concerning the software question: or is it Sketchup?
EDIT: Another render from 3ds max, with the model imported from Inventor:

Quote from anttt69 :Good news, but no news on Brands.

Brands is coming along slowly. I bet they're hoping for it to come out in about 2 months when the next season ends..........

Great news with Oran though.
