yeah it did occur to me that it might be a fluffy pot, but i think (not sure) that the dfp is likely to be optically sensed rather than a 'traditional' pot, as 900deg would be quite insensitive with a 270deg pot.
thought id better ask u peeps before i started ripping into my DFP, but6 i think i'm just gonna have to dive in and have a look,
good tip BTW as wheels are surprisingly awkward things to keep still on a bench will working
i'm beginning to wonder if you're all getting a little excited, from my point of view the FFB in LFS is pretty damn good, better (ie more like reality) IMHO than any other i've tried, that's not to say it's perfect but it's along the right lines.
my feeling is that LFS's FFB must be pretty close to RL, if something happens IRL and i react a certain way, the chances are i'll react the same way in LFS given the same situation, barring G related sensations of course.
it's not like i'm a blinkered 'fanboy' anyway, i HAVE played 99.9% of sims and LFS is the closest thing to reality as far as the sensations you're talking about are concerned. that's why it's my sim of choice.
it's just a shame there aren't any trucks in LFS, might be able to do it with one of the ones behind blackwood pits just add a stunt ramp in behind and hey presto.
i fell on the floor giglling when i saw the speeded up footage, very knight rider
shame you can't get those cool 'speed disc' rims they used in the original, but at least super-persuit mode works
My DFP has (over the last few months) developed a nasty twitch, it's mainly noticable when travelling along a straight and all of a sudden without any other movements of wheel/pedals i get a 5 degree ish change in steering angle.
it can happen at any time (and move back randomly) hot or cold, and it's really starting to annoy me (caused a couple of accidents too) waddya reckon, has anybody else had this issue with an otherwise pretty solid wheel.
I've got to agree with speedfreak, sand traps are in a similar vein to catch-fencing, an admirable idea but one that works out not to work very well in many situations, for example if you're heading straight-on across a gravel trap, the chances are that the wheels and underside of the car will simply skip over the surface rather like skimming stones at the sea-side, go in sideways and you'll dig in and stop very quickly, so as far as LFS goes it's faily realistic to assume that if you come off at speed it'll be the wall that stops you, where LFS falls down is the sideways issue, i'm not sure it makes that much of a difference if you're sideways or not,
A lot of modern circuits are taking the philosophy that it's better to have a solid runoff so at least you stand a chance of stopping under control, and besides you don't get gravel all over the place when is all goes wrong
IMHO the 'light' feeling you say is missing, is definately there in LFS, ok it's subtle but it's something that has kept me on the track at most corners i arrive at.
it may be that because FFB as we know it isn't smooth enough to truly replicate what you feel when strapped into a real car, i mean at the limit it's a (relatively) subtle effect for real anyway, so it can get lost in the very clumsy nature of current FFB systems.
I've got a feeling that most of the 'canned' efects used by other games is simply a way to make effects stand out enough to be obvious. LFS is at least very 'pure' in the way it generates its feedback, although they might not be as easy to pick up on as other titles.
the RB4 IS a rallycar waiting to happen, it's just about the best thing to attack the rallx track with ATM and it would only need a few tweaks to bring it up to a proper rally standard. nice renders tho' but if it's gonna be a GTR it needs to be a little more aggressive
it's funny 'cos with the PC mine starts up properly, doing it's calibration thing on boot, but with the ps2 and GT4 it seems to require a re-plug on startup, most annoying, but it's not like i bought it to play GT4 with
BTW mine's set at 540, it's a nice compromise for all the cars in LFS, te single seaters just feel a bit wrong at 900/720
i love it when it comes round to manhunt, i sold a young woman a copy once, only to have her bring it back a few days later, after giving it to her son and being horrified, she absolutely furious we had sold her that game,
her son is 4illepall
i'm still not quite sure if some people understand what the little 18 at the bottom means
it's nice to remember what my first impressions of LFS were, it seems like soooooooo long ago i raced my first laps of blackwood (0.2F), nice to remind oneself how far along LFS has come, seems that every 2 minutes somebody is bitching that there's never any progress, hah, if they're this impatient now, they'll prolly not be around for S3 like we will
thanks S,E,V you're legends
BTW, KiD, do ya think it's time to stop giving you're avatar those little pills you keep feeding him?
maybee we should set up some sort of LX league, would mean finding a decent race ought not to be too hard.
i feel the LX4 is the perfect tool for learning RWD it's light so you can get used to hurling a car into the corner with more speed than you'd think, but at the same time you need a fair amount of 'power discipline' , it's the reason i'm able to keep the other RWDs on the road, could never really drive the XR's 'cos of their nasty handling traits (to me anyway) but all that stops with the LX it seems IMHO
I'm always wondering, where the hell are all the LXs online? I can't remember the last time i saw one on a server, it seems the only way to race one is to go on a 'all cars' server, i'm just wondering what people feel about the cars,
i really enjoy these little things, colin chapman was a bloody genius
usually it just 'cos they've got no idea what being a REAL racer is all about they just assume the guy with the biggest wing wins. kinda fraudian of them i suppose
i just wish i could get a proper fluffy dice mod tho' , for measuring G forces 'n sh!t
/me dons sunday best, burberry cap, leaps into the nearest vauxhall nova, (still in primer, new bit of plastic not painted yet), and speeds off into the distance
it might be worth giving this little distro a try... http://www.goosee.com/puppy/ it's called puppy linux, and it's pretty cute, at around 60Mb it's diddy, and spot on for older boxes like my little 200Mhz with 80Mb of RAM .
just about copes with an S2 dedi_host but it should be ok for around 5-6 players on a big track
you'll havwe to compile wine you're self tho' although packages are available both are simple if you read what you're doing.
the 'feel' for me is kinda like a slight vibration, the pad touching a really hard and 'bumpy'-ish disc, but fed to me via a fluid with lots of inertia, when the wheel locks you feel the absence of this and a very slight depression of the pedal.
it depends on you're brake system tho', get rid of any ABS, chuck away the vacuum servo, throw out the rubber hoses for nice shiny braided ones and go through the whole mechanism of the pedal, cylinders, pipes, and calipers/wheel cylinders. get rid of any slack movement you find but make sure the brake pedal has a light return spring on it to ensure 'pumpability' and to stop the brakes binding on
the simple answer (I know, i'm always stating the obvious:tilt is NOT to keep you're foot flat while shifting, you wouldn't do it in a real car so don't do it in LFS.
the MRT is a very snappy sort of car to drive, like the chaps say, it's supposed to be, try running the car on road tyres (if you got slickmod) to get a better feel for whats going on, road tyres do give you a more progressive action than the R1's currently on (tyres made by loctite not cromo) but go easy and tweak slowly as you go to get a nice freindly setup (soften it all to start with especially the rear) and once you're pushing it hard all the way round with nice predictable moves, switch back to slicks and gradually make the set more aggressive. it works for me
it's nice to see LFS moving beyond simple 'arrive and drive' racing, into a more organised and exciting form. none of this is new in itself (i might be wrong about the live video stream, for LFS anyway)
it's all better covered than 99% of all other motorsport, i can see a LFS channel starting on TV soon
you've raised the bar, for sim-racing, for endurance racing and for LFS
well done to all involved
i hope this is just a sign of more good things to come!
if you're effering to a light 'squealing' sort of sound then that is the speed controller of the motor turning on and off at around at frequency of sound, it's just regulating itself really, you'll hear he same sound from a cordless drill or r/c car, it would seggest that the wheels might be overloaded(grease is with silicone grease) or underpowered (check/clean all the connections) mine did it from the box and still does it to this day a little when it's working hard, my momo made even more noise but only at full lock. it could be an electronic problem but i like to hope it won't be
i'm certainly no expert but my server seems to use 63392 and 29339 both UDP and TCP, ive left my server in the DMZ of my router and left only those gaps in the firewall, it seems to work ok. dunno if this helps
with my dfp i've set up the L+R thumb buttons to look and with my paddles set to toggle the indicators, i find i use those a lot too. it really is the best wheel for LFS if only for it's huge array of buttons
good post, many people are afraid to look about too much 'cos it does mean you might crash, but keep using it and you're spatial awereness will be improved dramatically
I love the dynamic sound engine, i'm very mechanically minded illepall and like to hear things really working hard and most of the engine sounds ingame are awesome, ok it might be nice to have some more farts and pops and maybee some sort of variable like exhaust length etc, something that would enable the car developer to hone the character of the exhaust sound,
the flat 4 engine in the FXR sounds awesome tho guys, sounds frightening at 3 or 5 cylinders but we all know that's just not cricket.
Here's a couple of vids of my *ahem*beautiful skoda displaying it's ruggedness and eastern-bloc upbringing with a series of snow enduced handbrake binges and a couple of j turns for fun, nothing special but good for the soul
