Hey Souzy, found you on PSN and sent you a friend request but errr... obviously not you so either I'll make a new friend or gain a reputation as a stalker!
Three screens! Cool. Mind you my 49" Sony ain't bad.
Just spent some time looking for GFCers on PlayStation network. Amazing how many of us have the same id as in LFS. Sent a whole load of friend requests.
Get on ebay Nick and find someone selling a PS3 near you. That's what I did and I had it set up same day. I also found another seller selling games nearby. By the end of the day I had my console and 16 games all for 90 quid!
Anyone from the GFC still knocking about? Wondering if any of my old LFS friends are now playing Gran Turismo 6? If so please share your PlayStation network name and I'll add you to my friends if you fancy a meet up.
Some good info in this thread and reminds me of the challenges of setting up tbo class cars. Imagine if we had rain in LFS. That would make things really interesting.
I can totally believe that with road car manufacturers trying to improve fuel consumption figures. Savagly lean mixtures at small throttle angles at cruising speeds and injectors completely closed during over-run.
Amazed they can make an engine idle at those mixtures though.
Initially when I read all this I thought "glad I didn't re-activate my account" but then on refection I think it's fair enough. It was a test, the objective of tests is to find problems so if you take part in such an event you have to accept that it is likely to go wrong.
These FM Event races run every Friday night yes? Always FOX or what? Would like to be in the next one and just wondering whether there is a website or forum section with info about these events.
Stormy - just missed you - saw you on redline server but you must have just left.
Nige - I know what you mean about no time. I certainly could never dedicate the amount of time I used to.
Glad to hear that stuff about one line in iRacing is wrong. I am definately going to give it some time to decide for myself.
Great to hear from so many of you. I just happened to come across a 30 lap FM Event Fox race tonight with a few old names. Connected just as quali was about to start so my out lap and quali lap were the first on that track for a few years. Needless to say I was way off the pace but enjoyed it none the less and kept out of trouble.
The graphics just leave me a little cold compared to how iRacing looks now and I also bought the F12010 download which also blows LFS away in terms of graphics.
If it wasn't for all you lads I would have stopped coming back to LFS by now.
Think I'm going to give it a go and try not to spend too much. Maybe just keep competing and earning those credits. I do like the look of all the stats and licensing so I still think it'll be fullfilling even if the physics aren't quite right which is what some people seem to be saying...
I knew I'd read it in a decent source. These ratios below are taken from A Graham Bell's Four-Stroke Performance Tuning (Second Edition). It's the bible as far as I'm concerned and I would recommend anyone serious about engine tuning to have a copy of this book for constant reference.
Thanks for the info Deko. I think I'm gonna give it a try but for now I just want to pound round FE Gold with a few old LFS mates and get that out of my system first.
I was always under the impression you would melt an engine pretty quick running it at stochio. But I'm not sure where I heard that so I could be wrong.
Thanks for replies lads. Lets have an unofficial get together some time on a public server. I dusted off my rig last night and set it up. I was surprised to see we are still version z. Was expecting to have to upgrade.
Had a few laps around FE Gold and I felt like I dialled straight back in to the mindset required for setting up and getting fast. Even got within a couple of seconds of my best around there.
The force is strong with this one!
Should be online today/tonight if anyone fancies a meet.
That didn't take long. Time for some updating of LFS and some desk re-organisation I think.
Good to see you guys are still about. Either of you tried iRacing? I posted in the thread in Off Topic. I was thinking about giving it another go and see how its developed. Think it might have got a little cheaper too.
Just been onto LFS World Racers Online to see if any of my old mates are on there. Didn't recognise a single name. Any of the old guard out there still? Got the urge to get back in a FOX and do a few laps of FE Gold or something. Had it for a few days now.
If there anyone still knocking about I'd like to meet on track somewhere.
btw I just got gentlefoot.com back up and running for some nostalgia.
As you can see the time the injectors are open only relates to the rpm and load loosely. Generally we can say that the higher rpm and load the more fuel is used but the link is weak at very low and very high rpm.
Maybe this can be explained because an engine will struggle to run at very low rpm because of lack of momentum so will require more fuel. And at very high rpm and load a nice lean mixture (about 12.5:1) is required for max power.
Every motor will require a different map depending on a multitude of factors. I could probably list hundreds of factors but things such as igntion timing, cam duration and lift, injector size, fuel pressure, fuel type, RON, MON, intake and exhaust design, head design etc etc would be included.
It doesn't really help in determining the best way to drive a particular car in order to achieve maximum mpg if that is part of the question. But my instinct tells me that for most motors lower rpm and light throttle position will achieve best mpg assuming the motor isn't labouring.
Speeds below that where wind resistance becomes significant (about 60-70mph) will help fuel consumption. Obviously 5th gear is better than 4th so I would say get up to speed as quickly as you can without using lots of throttle or high rpm.
I'm thinking about a return to sim racing. Considering re-activating my iRacing account but I have a few questions aimed at those who've spent a bit of time using iRacing recently. With all the stats and licensing features it really looks like the best thing out there for the serious sim racer. But you guys can tell me whether that's true or not.
I tried a racing 2-3 years ago and the numbers of racers were fairly limited? How big are the grids these days. Do they fill up and are there ever times when you can't get a slot in a race?
If I remember correctly iRacing only shows the racers real names. Part of the reason I'm considering a return to sim racing is to meet back up with old friends that I used to race with here in LFS. But how would I know I was racing an old LFS buddy if their LFS nickname isn't shown in iRacing?
One of the elements within LFS that I loved the most was car setup. LFS was great in terms of making small changes to set ups and being able to feel the result of the change on track. How's iRacing when it comes to car setup?
Also any general comparisions and contrasts between iRacing now and LFS would be really handy.
Thanks in advance for any comments. And if any of my old mates read this please pipe up and let me know you are iRacing. Would be great to race again.
Thanks guys, I really appreciate the kind messages. Good to know TDRT is still going - a great team that any LFS racer would do well to join.
I have very fond memories of the GFC and I consider all the guys who raced in my leagues as genuine friends even though I only ever met one or two of you guys in person.
Maybe when the business is more established there will be that long awaited reunion. Probably will need to take on some help with the business first though. It's growing little by little so you never know.
Sorry guys, LFS has taken a major back seat while I was building the business up. Needless to say the amount of spare time I have hasn't increased. Today is the first day off I've had since New Years Day.
Hope you are all keeping well though and showing those novices how it's done.
