Quote from Bandit77 :so what about this assumption:

if you take a roadcar (production car) with a sporty stock suspension and...

A) lower it by just replacing springs (which are usually harder and shorter), you will have all the benefits of a lower center of gravity (which doesn't really affect grip, does it?), a bit more negative camber, but on the expense of damper lifespan (obvious) and the ride will get bouncy and therefore you will possibly have less grip / traction.

B) mount dampers that are harder (and mostly shorter) than the stock dampers (although I don't know why one would do this - maybe because their "better"), you wouldn't have any real benefits, would you?

In reference to your point A - lowering the car by reducing the length of springs will also effect the suspension geometry which will lead to changes in the Steering Axis Inclination and scrub radius. This can cause all sorts of problems with steering but also roll centres. I lowered a Golf Mk2 with a set of coilovers and initially had major understeer until I raised the front back up again by quite a bit. The problems with steering sensitivity remain owing to the fact the wheels on there have a different offset which also effects scrub radius.

In reference to both your points - you ask what the benefits are when changing to harder springs and dampers. The answer is none, unless you are going to use the vehicle on a nice flat surface like a race track. On the road the extra stiffness results in less tyre contact with the road because of all the bumps you get on typical (uk at least) roads.

R1s last forever in the FOX. I have completed every race in the GFC this season on R1s. The races are around 75 minutes and R1 will last around 2/3 - 3/4 of the race. At some tracks you can even do the whole race without changing tyres.

I have a lot of good setups for the FOX on my website. The one for AS Hist is a beauty.

Another consideration is the amount of work the dampers will have to do.

If they are used with very soft springs they won't last as long. Rebound on dampers tends to reduce over time quite a bit until eventually you need to get them re-conditioned.

Quote from Jakg :Surely the weight of the car and the pressure that the suspension is under as the car gets to the bottom of the Eau Rouge bit has an affect that needs to be factored into the setup, whereas Club is very flat...?

I'm not setup guru, but i'd think that there would need to be some diferences...?

I would suggest that what happens at the bottom of eau rouge is irelevant as you are heading through there with no steering lock on anyway if you have the line right.

I think that undulations are only important if they happen while a change of direction is also required.

Quote from Jakg :AS2 has a massive straight whereas Cadet has a tiny straight - Cadet has BIG elevation changes whereas Club doesn't

...how can they be similar...?

How long the straights are is irrelevant on a machine with a low max speed and no downforce.

Elevation changes - not sure how that affects setup - please explain.

If you are handy with VB - and I mean handy, and you know how to use API calls to fetch and examine certain pieces of memory it is possible however it is not an accepted practice and the last time I posted details about how to do it the post was removed.

There is an excellent set for AS2 on my setups page.

http://www.gentlefoot.com/sets.html

It's one of my very best sets and I got very close to WR with it. I would have thought it will work pretty well at Cadet too.

If only it were that simple. Unfortunately it's not. ARB rates required depend on spring and damper rates too. So you can get wierd results like that you describe.

Sounds like you may need a bit more front spring rate or maybe even front bump.

When I adjust sets I tend to work in 1 (defo not more than 2 or 3) clicks at a time.

Often, if I want less oversteer I will add 1 click of ARB, spring and front bump.

Also, your brake balance could be affecting things. Too much rear can make it snappy under braking, too much front and you can't get the nose in while trail braking.

Also, try messing about with the diff. Not enought pre-load or coast locking can also cause the problems you describe.

Quote from marzman :Come on. This is Hamed Sam's topic. Keep focus please.

A very good point. I simply posted a link to an article I wrote about improving lap times and this is what this thread descends to.

In fact, pretty much every post I make these days has the exact same effect regardless of how relevant it is to the OPs topic.

I come on here to offer help to new guys - thats all.

Here are some recent examples:

Firstly, I can put whatever links in my sig I like and there is nothing any of you can do about it.

Secondly, the different parts of the sig links to different pages so the different labels are required.

Thirdly, search engine bots read the labels of the links so it is important that they are labelled correctly for optimisation reasons.

Just what is your issue with GF?

Actually Nige I have changed the sig since this post to try and keep these people happy.

Quote from AndroidXP :Err, just to be sure, the FOX in LFS is supposed to be sequential anyway...

err, read the post properly please.

Quote from Gentlefoot :These cars would probably have sequential boxes with flappy paddles anyway so its not really an issue for me.

Quote from Michael Denham :And LFS Setups sounds rather official too.

Ok, so what would you like me to call the page where I put my LFS setups?? Let me know and I'll change it for you.

Is there anything else on the site you don't like. Just make a list and ofcourse I will change it all for you.

Is there anything else you would like me to do? Is my domain name OK with you or does it sound 'too official'?

I was thinking about this last night. Not sure how we are gonna do this. Need to have a chat about it.

I too have tried using the H-Shifter and heel toeing instead of the auto blip. In the FOX for example, because of the low weight and downforce using an H-Shifter and cutch means you are slower in the braking areas. In slower cars that take longer to stop it is less of an issue.

I simply wouldn't be competitive in FOX league races with full manual gears. These cars would probably have sequential boxes with flappy paddles anyway so its not really an issue for me.

However, when I play GTL occasionally I always go full manual. I don't care if I'm fast or slow when I play that game - I just enjoy the sound.

Quote from Ihab Abbas :Hey my friend I registered in gentlefoot forum and till now there is no activation for my account and I Will miss the race if I could not get the server password so pls resolve this issue.

And about the grid I think if there is more than 20 cars it will be lagy or what !!??

Thx

Activated now.

Shouldn't have any lag on this server. Ofcourse you can do nothing about laggy people with slow connections if there are any.

Right, I now have 32 entries but don't worry. There are always several no shows at these events. For a grid like this I would expect at least 5 no shows and often there are more.

So I will accept another 10 entries. The server has 47 slots in total.

For anyone who has entered and not yet registered in the forum, please do so now. The server password is posted in the registered forum user section and I will need to activate your account.

This is shaping up to be a great race with a good mix of experienced drivers and new comers. It will be intense! Good luck all.
