The only time engine braking can save fuel is in comparison to idle. When you close the throttle the injectors are shut off unless the engine is at idle in which case the required amount of fuel is delivered to keep the engine running.
I guess with carbs the venturi effect will continue to suck some fuel through even when you are completely off the throttle as is the case when engine braking. Not sure if closing the butterfly completely actually results in zero fuel delivery when using carbs.
Sequential gears shifting with paddles is much faster in braking areas. That's why many real life race series ban the use of sequential gearboxes.
It reminds me of one time I went online with my G25 H box set up and did a few laps. Someone commented "Dance Gentlefoot dance!" I liked that
I do find it hard heel-toeing in LFS cos there is no clutch or brake feel unlike in a real car. In real life I heel/toe habitually but in LFS I prefer paddle shift.
Aah yes - the 60 lap GPs - they were great. Good to see you're still about dude. Actually there's a lot of racers I recognise from years ago in this thread. Nice to see.
Yeah - the SR server would always be my server of choice as SR were born out of the GFC. But as you say, often there's not really the numbers on there for really exciting racing.
If you approach the race on the basis that you are there to provide quality opposition to the other drivers and have some good quality wheel to wheel racing then you can forget about the finishing position.
For me the reward I get from finishing a race without incident in say 5th far outweighs the reward I get from finishing a race in 1st if I did it by making a dodgy pass on someone and spinning them out, causing mayhem behind and leaving me free to drive to the finish without pressure of a car behind.
Last night at about 10:30 (BST) I joined the FM Fox Junkies server. It was completely full and I was at the back of the 32 car grid expecting absolute mayhem.
Inevitably there were a couple of incidents ahead of me in the first couple of corners (AS Club) but everyone around me seemed pretty sensible and most people made it through. Worked my way up to 12th.
Started 16th in the second race and expected it to be even more hectic in the middle of the pack without the luxury of dropping back to leave space as I had in the first race. Again, a T1 incident squeezed everyone but again, drivers around me were sensible and we all got through, wheel to wheel. Finished 8th.
This public racing was every bit as good as the standard I've seen in OWRL (even better than some races). It was getting close to GFC standard. After two intense races I was buzzing.
So, well done FM for running this server, and well done to every driver I raced with. Brilliant!
But, alas the day of time for LFS are well and truly over for me now. Running your own business swallows up an awful lot of time.
There's no reason why someone couldn't take over the running of the GFC/GTTC. However, how that would work in practice without any involvement from me I'm not so sure.
I thought about putting gentlefoot.com up for sale. Any offers?
Guess you may have noticed I haven't had much time for LFS of late. Was wondering how all the old GFC/GTTC guys are getting on so I thought I'd start this twitter thread.
I used to spend a hell of a lot of time on LFS. Running the GFC and GTTC, creating track guides and videos and racing ofcourse.
But I simply don't have time for it any more unfortunately.
Sad to hear CTRA died. I think a few of the big teams dispanded too.
Would love to have the odd race but when you have competed at a fairly high level and then come back to it having forgotten the 'feel' it is very frustrating.
The primary difference between road tyres and race slicks is the size of the temperature range in which they operate effectively. As soon as you are 10 degrees lower than optimum temp with a slick you lose massive amounts of grip whereas road tyres still offer good grip even when completely cold.
This idea makes me wonder what all the teams other than Ferrari, Mclaren, BMW and Renault will be competing for next year seeing as none of the other teams are likely to finish any races on the podium.
iRacing provides a very well organised system for creating races and strong statistics. It's like LFS with all the GFC stats that I started to create but never finished.
The standard of racing on servers is far higher than in LFS public servers. It's in a completely different league. I have now completed 5 races and not made contact with any other racers at all yet. On one occassion, in warm up two guys ahead of me tangled and I had to hit the brakes hard to avoid hitting the back of one of them. I just stopped in time and the fella who was close behind me also managed to stop before hitting the back of me. Very impressive!
Physics are superior to LFS. The behaviour of the car under braking is far better than in LFS and you can feel the tyres more. When the car finally lets go, the way it spins is far more realistic than LFS.
I don't know how crash detection compares to LFS as I still haven't crashed into another car yet. Although behaviour when hitting tyre barriers seems spot on to me.
All in all iRacing is a superior product to LFS although it is way too expensive and I am unlikely to buy more than the one month of membership.
Work out the power to weight ratio of both cars and then reduce the FOX intake or add ballast until the power to weight ratio of both cars is the same.
Then test and if you have more grip in the FOX and times are faster than add some more ballast/intake restriction.
Based on my first hand experience from taking tyre temps after sprint runs it is the other way around. Heat is generated by the tyre tread and sidewalls moving about. The lower the pressure the more movement and the more heat is generated.
I guess if you go beyond a certain tyre pressure - i.e. so much that the tyre begins to 'crown' (only the middle in contact with the track surface) then that could lead to more heat as a result of more sliding caused by reduced grip because of the smaller contact patch of the over inflated tyre gives.
The seriousness and drivers being scared to make mistakes sounds like just my kind of racing. I was one of the more cautious drivers in LFS I think except when I'm wheel to wheel with a fellow racer I know I can trust.
Decided to take the plunge and have bought a months subscription. Will try it tonight and let you know what I think.
