Quote from tristancliffe :I wouldn't be surprised if the best currently available commercial kart simulation is actually Gran Turismo 5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wat.

It takes about 20 minutes to download, install, and play the demo. So try it out.

Gran Turismo karts are fun (for about 10 seconds), but don't really drive anything like proper karts, and ALL the tracks are huge and flat out almost everywhere.

This sim actually has real tracks, and the physics are 100x better than GT karts, and 10x better than anything in rFactor. Just because visually some funky stuff is going on at the wheels doesn't mean things aren't modelled correctly physically. Though I do admit it's extremely likely shortcuts have been taken, and there are flaws (castor setting seems to make too much difference to handling, FFB goes oddly light during high speed cornering), it's really surprisingly good.

Completely retarded website, I voted in 3/4 different categories until it refreshed and said "You have already voted in this category." , and now I can't vote at all for any category. Tried deleting cookies, still doesn't work.

Quote from Intrepid :To be fair to get karting right takes a monumental effort, and GT5 would be wasting their time trying to make anything anywhere near realistic.

Also i recall karting was scheduled for GT6 and NOT GT5. The suggestion of karting was leaked in the press, and because it was a popular thing they decided to bring it forward to GT5.

True, but I'm not moaning about the physics, despite them obviously being hugely simplified. It wouldn't take a monumental effort to make some smaller and twistier tracks with shorter straights and tighter hairpins.

True, but it's still at least twice the size of any Kart track I know of IRL... If they shrank the whole thing by half it would be brilliant.

Edit: OK looking at it's length maybe not twice the size, but the corners are too open really for it's length.

Is it just me who thinks the Karting could actually potentially be really awesome if it weren't for one huge problem?

All the Kart tracks are friggin huge. Most of the early special event ones are completely flat out everywhere, and you only need to do some braking for 1 or 2 of them in the whole game. Even in the course maker, I can't create anything as short and twisty as you would see in real life. It's a joke lol. The minimum number of sectors in the course maker is 2, and when you add any kind of complexity to the circuit you end up with something nearly 2 miles long.... I'm pretty disappointed how little the GT5 devs seem to know about actual Karting.

It only recommends you don't race on a satellite connection due to high latency. If you have a low ping on your connection then it's fine...

What's the grey bar just to the right of the pedal displays on the bottom left?

Quote from pearcy_2k7 :What settings are you using david? 43.9 is my best effort

Just the default set with soft tyres and 4 L fuel. Reduced castor as well to 8 or 9, can't remember.

Wheel settings and stuff I think are important too, I have my wheel set to 210 degrees in control panel, with 100 FFB in game and 0 damping, rotation thingy is off.

Quote from baSh0r :43,466 // 13.685 & 15.888 & 13.893

pretty good lap, that were 2 pb splits for me (all except for mid sector, tpb is 15.826 there)

There might be a 42 possible but it's getting quite thin

Hehe, impressive!

I haven't really fiddled that much with the setup options, so a 42 is quite probably possible. Though I need to stop messing around with this and do some work! :P

Quote from Intrepid :The difficulty with getting a decent kart simulation working is the minimal steering input and coding force feedback to feel correct. Also, the way you use your body has an effect on the kart quite substantially. So it is hard to compare sim with real life. It's more like bike racing at times in that sense.

I need to fiddle about with the settings a bit on this. See if I can get it working better

Yeah, I think real karting is easier, since you feel more part of the kart itself etc. And yeah I also found I had to fiddle around with all the settings to get it to feel right, but once you get it it's fantastic.

Quote from rc10racer :Thanks for the set bash0r.

45 44.390 13.850 16.248 14.292 115.6 km/h

Sucks but not bad considering i have never experienced how a kart handles before but since it's a sim i bet it's not close to how a real life kart handles.

I've driven 2 stroke karts before, and it's pretty damn good IMO.

I'm down to 43.702, with the default set just with soft tyres, and less fuel. Replay attached.

Same circuit.

Edit: RasmusL, I found I had to wait a while between loading stuff, with nothing happening on the screen, but it seems stuff was just loading in the background.

This is awesome! The fundamentals feel fantastic, and the castor setting makes loads of difference to the karts handling. Hands down the best kart sim yet.

Down to a 45.000 after an hour or messing around. 43 is possible probably.
Looking for a new motherboard

Hi all.

I'm after a new board as my current one only has a 4x PCIe slot, and can't run my CPU past 2.1 Ghz (ASRock 4CoreDual), so I think it's bottlenecking things quite badly in iRacing.

I need more than 2 slots for RAM since I have 3 sticks, and I want to be able to overclock my CPU (E2140) to around 3 Ghz if possible, which apparantly it will do with the stock cooler. I'm looking to spend the minimum really.

This one looks like it meets my requirements - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/161010

But it seems some people have had problems with crashing, and not booting with USB devices attached. :/

Quote from spanks :Nice lap Dave! How do you like the car?

Just got back from classes all day...midterm and all. Can't wait to get back to it

Well it's pretty much as awesome as I was hoping. Driving it around Silverstone gives a weird sense of deja vu, after watching so much onboard F1 footage over the years.

It's fairly easy to drive under the limit, but once you start to push things it really gets interesting. Needs very good throttle control at low speed which is great, and there's so many setup options which might cause my brain to explode. My only gripe is that the tyres feel very under damped, which leads to a bit of a "pogo" effect after some bumps / curbs, but hopefully we can tune that out with the setup options. Best sim experience yet though easily.

Quote from troy :Can't see how anybody thinks this was an "ok" move by schumi, you can clearly see him checking his mirrors for pretty much the whole straight and just when rubens is on his side he starts to squeeze him even more, it would've been ok if he made his intentions clear by going completely to the right side (since he clearly knew rubens will have a go at him there) but he decided to risk a really bad crash and possibly horrible consequences for the people in the pitlane, well deserved penalty in my opinion.

Totally agreed. He made the mistake of not moving far enough over to the right hand side of the track well BEFORE Rubens even got near him. Rubens had a good 3 car width gap to the right of Schumacher which he of course chose to take. Schumacher should have conceded the right hand side once Rubens had started to have overlap, squeezing like that is out of order and will only cause a possible accident.

Great job Phil, impressive in that field with several top DWC drivers. And grats on your win Dustin. :P

Quote from Töki (HUN) :Haha, it was fun watching Di Grassi. Poor guy

Di Grassi had a bit of a nightmare yeah. He obviously hadn't had enough practice to feel comfortable in the sim, and after a couple of excursions his car was too damaged to continue (I don't think the cars were repaired after a reset). Hopefully other drivers won't be put off by the challenge in the future but it seems to probably be the case.

Was really looking forward to this event, didn't go my way at all. In fact I am quite appalled at the driving displayed by one driver.
