Race Green 300km of Westhill 2023 - information and discussions

Race Green Events presents it's currently only regular endurance race for the 4th year in row - as always the race will be run with cars from the extended TBO class in the challenging Westschleife layout course. For the 2nd year in row and 3rd time in total we will have 300 kilometer race to decide the winner[s] of the event. Last year increased the field variability by adding cars mods besides the 5 LFS default cars, this year the trend will continue with a little difference - entrants will be able to apply cars they would like to race if they cannot find a suited car in the current list, which consists of LFS default cars, mods with approved status and several cars from last years list. Despite huge cars variability, the skill will be the main factor which will decide the winner as cars are well matched and to compensate different fuel ranges,a mandatory 30 seconds pitstop during the race will be required again.

The track once again received an update in which some slower sections were removed to give the track a little more speed, cutting it down to 13.65 kilometers length, which means laptimes under 8 minutes might be possible. The nominal distance of 300 kilometers will be completed after 22 circles around the track, while the race is expected to be just under 3 hours in length (over 3 hours for those on tale end of lead lap). As always it will be allowed to race alone or in a team with up to 3 drivers - the track alone is an endurance factor,so it is highly advised to enter the race in a 2 or 3 driver team unless driver is ready for a proper endurance to race alone.

Timetable:
Sunday,21st May
15:45 UTC / 17:45 CET - 60 minutes open track qualifying
17:00 UTC / 19:00 CET - race start for the 22 laps race
* the shown CET time is current (summer) time - if not residing in CET time zone, always refer to UTC for correct time zone convertion!

Qualifying:

Due the track length an outlap is very long and takes more than 1/7 of the qualifying time - all the drivers should be patient and leave large gaps (preferably even out of visibility range) to ensure a clean hotlap! Organization is encouraging to drive multiple hotlaps back to back as it will ensure more completed hotlaps.
Multiple driver entries are allowed to qualify only with 1 driver! The driver who qualified the entry must complete a minimum of full 10% of entry's total distance during the race (3 laps in case entry completes whole distance)!

Race:
Race will feature an extended starting grid - cars will be placed on grid in rows seperated by 20 meters distance between them to lower the probability of early incidents. Every entry is expected to be familiar with pitlane entry, exit and driver change procedure for error free pitstops.
Race requires a minimum time spent in pitstall of 30 seconds. That can be done either with single pitstop or sum of multiple pitstops. Entry which has spent less time will receive penalty time added to his finish time, which will be calculated by doubling the missing time to complete neccesary minimum time and adding additional 10 seconds. Drivers failing to pit at all will receive 150 seconds penalty added to finish time (30s*2 + additional 90s).

Track and it's limits:
Due the low average width of the course it is important to point out about track limits - track is defined by paved surface (asphalt/tarmac/cobblestones) and 2 wheels have to be on it at all times! Drivers may not cut corners over grass and also may not run wide on grass when exiting turns with more than 2 wheels. If such event happens due a mistake, driver has to lift off throttle to make sure no advantage is gained. Fastest laps in both sessions will be checked for any violations while other drivers might be randomly checked during whole race. Best way to avoid any penalties is to stay fair!
There are serveral sections where leaving paved surface with all wheels is tolerated - glass patches which are marked with yellow and blue chalk arrows are a legal racing surface. All around the track there are posts on both inside and outside of turns - even if these have no legal use and they are just visual help to determine track limits, drivers still should avoid knocking them down.
With some help of community we named several turns and sections, which can also be used as orientation:

Cars and restrictions:
To level out performance of all available cars,an restriction table has been created - the used restriction method is voluntary air restriction in percents and added weight in kilograms. Each car has it's advantages and disadvantages, but overall deemed to have relatively equal performance after our limited testing.

Car setup limitations:

Slick tyres are not allowed!
Mods configs are not allowed to have rollcage, crashbars and lightbars - please select configs without these (illegal equipment)!

It is advised to test several cars before signing up to decide the best car for your or your team's performance! Cars have different handling characteristics, some might be slightly less competitive. Cars list and their full specifications data can be found in RG300KW spreadsheet.
Some cars still have WIP status.
It is possible to apply other cars from public mods list, please check this post below for link to car applications thread.
Drivers are responsible to use correct restriction during pre-event practice! Server will have the restrictions enforced in the last week of practice and during official event sessions via PiranMoto Car Limiter insim app.
DISCLAIMER: Race Green Events is not affiliated to any of these user created cars! This means that organization of this event cannot affect existance and quality of these cars. We monitor any updates and check for their effect on cars performance to decide if any alteration of restriction is needed.

Other info:
Blue flag behaviour - due long lap very rarely such occasion might happen. Even if the usual Race Green Events' rule of "you may not block lapping car's passing manouvre" is used also here,it is advised to try not to stay ahead of lapping car and let by in safe location before lapping pass is needed. Lapping cars still have to be very patient, wait for safe opportunity to lap and not force a pass in narrow turns.

Basic racing rules - we'll use as always basic rules of clean racing and judge incidents with common sense. It is advised to avoid any contacts in any situation to ensure clean and fair racing.

Rejoins - in case of time out, rolled or undrivable car it is permitted to rejoin the race. To ensure better visibility of race positions, the rejoined entry will receive back the completed laps as soon as possible - race administration will check the replay during race. If the timeout or telepit has happened before reaching 1st split of a lap,one lap will be deducted to avoid possible misuse!

Postrace action - after the distance has been completed,3 highest finishing cars are asked to take a place on a podium for post race media, located between tribunes on the left side of Tribunes backstraight (check track map above). After top3 have taken their positions and photos are made, all other competitors also may join the area besides podium for further photo sessions.

Chatting - is limited during the race session. Allowed are short communications like appologies, thanking for letting by or between drivers of same entry when deciding when to pit and make driver swap, allthough it is encouraged to use external voice chat application (Discord,Teamspeak, phone call or whatever suits best). Race Green Events can offer a private voice channel in it's discord server if needed.
Unneccesary conversations will receive warning first and if not stopped - entry will receive drive-through penalty.
Not competing observers may not use chat at all!

Skins - specific car skins are not required in this race, allthough it is highly suggested to have a skin that displays entry number on car's side. Feel free to use event's official full logo on your skins! Also skins must fullfill lfsworld skin upload requirements and drivers may not use skins they don't have rights to use - like private skins of others or other teamskins.

Name format - entry number (may not be colored black or dark blue) required in front of your registered name, number and name must be seperated by a space.

Event server - server is online,is set in practice mode and has an Airio for laptime tracking (due hexadecimal code, most mods laptimes cannot be shown on simple !top table). Airio can spectate connections with very high and unstable ping for safety reasons (stable connections even from Australia should not be affected). Server will be open for public use until race weekend. For private practice feel free to use the attached layout.
Server link (click2join): Race Green Events

Event will be held using the latest stable version of LFS (currently 0.7D),compatible older versions and compatible test patches are tolerated.

All information here can be changed,if so,notification will be posted about changes.

For the 2nd month in row there are 3 changes in cars list:

The MZG SEDAN has received APPROVED status in mods list, therefor is added to RandomCar cars lineup by default, despite finishing 3rd in the latest voting (and 2nd in previous voting). It is the 5th AWD car in the list and will start it's journey in the series with 16% air restrictor.

The winner of the latest voting is the relativelly light PIRAN FIREFLY 200 which will enlarge the already largest engine/drivetrain layout type FR (front engined-rear wheel drive) and due it's light weight it will receive additional weight worth 80kg. The voting was won by quite comfortable margin of 6 votes and reached the highest ever supporters count.

The mighty URC1 keeps winning races and we keep slowing it down - it will receive additional 20kg ballast to reach a total of 50%+160kg restrictor and weight.

Quote from NENE87 :about the website, maybe by default make the updated mods on front, that can motivate the modders to update the mod? Some mods are hidden befor public, these mods are in back and rarely rated or view...

That's a bad idea, you would only get tons of "updates" with one little "fix" just to push it up. And then should mods which are completelly done sink away?

I would rather see much more filters, sort options in website (not really needed ingame) to have better possibility to find mods with specific values.

Wow,didn't expect such chat here as usually the event activity ends with results, but nice to see some feedback and discussions to make the thread more alive.

Quote from Eric :That was a very entertaining race!

I hope seeing racing like this will inspire you when building tracks - Westhill's support roads have turned out great for racing as it's something else than just plain sterile courses. Maybe in future some track could receive a bit wider support/access roads and better transition between those and main track for something like LeMans style track. Just throwing out ideas. Shrug

- - -

Regarding track limits at RGE it's usually quite simple - track is defined by paved surface, where curbs are accepted extension and drivers have to keep at least 2 tyres on track at all times. In this case the car was barely in track limits and since mr. Lakūnas did not protest the move,it was assumed the move was clean and not reviewed.

In the recent years the GT3 class racing has become pretty much a standard in racing world and the popularity is increasing in both real world racing and simulators. This week also RTFR joined the GT3 club with it's 1st race using car from this class. However the track was not one which we could call a standard course for this class - it consisted by about smaller half of modern raceway and by bigger half - public roads. This turned out to be quite challenging when setting up the car. 31 drivers tried the challenge in qualifying, putting the Pochete in 2nd position in most attended cars chart of this event, however 3 left and did not take their earned spot on the grid, while another 9 retired and did not saw the chequered flag.

The winner of the race led just 3 laps and none of them fully, but at the end of the race he used his opponents pace reduction and with quite bold move took the race lead with 2 turns and finish straight left. With this Gábor joined the exclusive 3 race wins in row club - he is the 4th driver in RTFR XL history to achieve such winning streak. The hungarian broke the tie for 3rd most wins as he scored his 6th RTFR XL race win, setting also his 6th fastest lap of the race (tied 3rd most). It was also the 10th fastest lap of the race for Hungary, while he scored his own 14th top5 finish. The lithuanian driver with inconsistent name was the fastest in qualifying and scored his 6th pole position (tying Gábor for 3rd most),but the 35 lead laps were not enough to convert than into win,so he finished 2nd,which is his 9th top5 finish, still setting 8th closest finish in RTFR XL history. Rest of the field was over 30 seconds behind winner - best of the rest was A.Valta, who finished his 2nd RTFR XL race in 3rd position after a win in his 1st. V.Veloso returned to RTFR XL after not attending 23 races and repeated his best qualifying position 5th,but he progressed in the race and finished 4th which is 3 positions better than his previous best result. Despite the penalty,Mantas did not lose a position and finished 5th,scoring his 3rd top5 finish.

* FUN FACT OF THE MONTH :
Westhill's support roads have become a regular site for racing in Race Green Events hosted series, but this was the 1st ever RTFR XL race using any part outside standard courses of Westhill. Only previous Westhill's non-standard track (the other half of International) was also the last non-standard track in this event, run on january of last year.

* CLOCK PITTER OF THE RACE :
Even if it was possible to finish this race without pitwork with some fuel economy,no driver attempted that so the clock pitter mention goes simply to shortest legal pit time - 10.10 seconds were done by Thehemuli.

* FIELD RUSHER OF THE RACE :
Seems like M.Kapal did not really care much about fast laptime in qualifying,so he started from quite low position - 27th (qualified 30th). But he gained a total of 14 positions in race and finished 13th.

VOD at Youtube:

With limitation of max 2 selections in row,Gábor was not eligible to select combo for next race,so it was relayed to 2nd place finisher, who already submitted his choise - in 4 weeks the 77th RTFR XL will be run with UFR at Rockingham's Sportscar configuration, but with slight edit - we will bypass the 1st chicane over turn 1 of the oval. With laptime of just over 1 minute it will be a 71 laps race. But next week we're back to normal RTFR version, which will be a quite fast one without running slick tyres. More info will be posted on the weekend as always.

Quote from nomen90 :great traction and stability.

Of course it has great traction and stability - it has downforce of a modern GTR car without even having a single element that provides it. That of course explains why front and rear wings produce no drag because they're simply not there, just by pure magic the car gets pressed down to road for extra grip! Tilt

Pitting rules:
Race requires a minimum time spent in pitstall of 10 seconds. That can be done either with single pitstop or sum of multiple pitstops. Driver who has spent less time will receive penalty time added to his finish time, which will be calculated by tripling the missing time to complete neccesary minimum time and adding additional 5 seconds. Drivers failing to pit at all will receive 1 minute penalty added to finish time (10s*3 + additional 30s).

Race statistics / RTFR .mpr folder / Event rating and other statistics (will be updated later this week)

Depite addition of mods,RTFR will still use all 20 of LFS's own original cars and this tuesday on the list we had one of the least popular cars - the tiny student formula machine created by McGill Racing Team, which is known for it's very eratic handling if not cautios. Still 31 drivers dared to tackle the challenging car in the tricky infield circuit of Rockingham during qualifying,4 of them were not present for start however.

The new world record holder for this combo defended his honor in qualifying by setting fastest laptime and scoring his 15th pole position. The race for Gábor was not much different as he led from green to chequered to score the 20th race win in RTFR. The hungarian however could not get also fastest lap to complete domination, but added 43rd top5 finish to his stats. Despite a very wrong timed experiment of the turn command causing him turned 90° on the grid,R.Kardol still rescued the race by finishing 2nd and scoring his 74th top5 finish. In his 10th RTFR appearance TJ scored his best ever qualifying position - 2nd,making a 2 positions improvement, but finished only 3rd scoring his 6th top5 finish. Doni just repeated his best qualifying position 3rd and also lost one position during the race to finish 4th,which is his 13th top5 finish. Mandula took a break by not attending in the past 24 RTFR races, but made a return with a bang by finishing 5th and scoring his 22nd top5 finish.

VOD at Youtube:

RTFR XL is next in the schedule and the upcoming round has a potential to produce as many retirements as the shorter version yesterday - the powerful Pochete GT3 car will be raced on a track that partially consists of Westhill's support roads, including a high speed curved road with plenty of elevation. The Westhill North configuration has been used in RTFR before, once with FXO and most recently with FBM. But in 2 weeks one of the road legal tyres wearing cars will be used in normal RTFR version - some information as always can be noticed in broadcast recording.

Race Green 300km of Westhill 2023 - Car applications
Eclipsed

Last year the event introduced car mods to it's cars lineups and this year will not be different. However the mods list is growing too large and it's not possible to test all cars anymore, additionally it will be a wasted effort in most cases as maximum of only 40 cars is possible for the race,so testing 90+ cars simply is not needed. Therefor we have a new solution - potential entries themselves can apply cars they would like to use in this event.

Race Green Events have tested several cars to offer an initial cars list of 26 cars - this consists of 5 default LFS cars (all used in 2021 event edition, last before mods era),all eligible cars from approved mods list and several cars from last year's list. You can see the list in the RG300kW spreadsheets.

Applied cars must fullfill several criteria to be added to official event's cars list:
Accessibility: PUBLIC from the date of application till end of the event.
Car type: Road legal saloon car with closed wheels bodywork,cabrios/roadsters allowed,SUVs,vans, busses, trucks are not.
Performance level: TBO class performance is minimum for car to be competitive - ~200 BHP/ton (heavier cars might be competitive with less, lighter might need more),road super tyres required. Higher performing cars will receive appropriate restriction.
Aerodynamics: Minimal downforce (max ~350N at 40m/s) acceptable if realistic for car type.
Configurations: Car must have a configuration without banned elements: Police/safety/taxi lights, rollcage, racecar wings, other elements that don't comply with generic road legal cars rules.
Colors: Full skin support required (both sides must be skinnable seperatelly)

To apply a car for cars list of the event, fill this form:

Quote :Car full name:
Link to mod's page:

All applications will be checked and tested before added to cars list, organization holds the right do deny any application if it does not suit event spirit. It is strongly suggested to apply cars that are finished in such extent that it does not require any major updates.

Car applications will be closed 1 week before the event - applications deadline is 14th may,23:59 UTC!

This car has been selected for next RTFR XL,so I used my free time today and started to make a skin. I noticed some inconsistency in triangles selection for skin and lights mapping around rear lights between right and left lights, best seen in viewer with simple lighting or on wireframe. Just a small mistake,if you're a perfectionist, you might want to fix it,but it's nothing what would fall in eyes in normal cases.

Quote from Kid222 :Session: Race
Lap: 1, first chicane
Involved drivers: Vincent Adultman, WCL Arska
Description of incident: I think i got removed from racing order in first chicane by my fellow competitor.

2 cars running side by side,on chicane entry V.Adultman leaves barely enough place for car inside, pushing Arska's car on curb, however Arskas controls show full throttle input with car on outside of the turn, which initiates the contact.

PENALTIES:

[WCL] Arska - receives a WARNING for avoidable contact. Repeated incident might lead to actual penalty.

- - - - - - - - - -

Just like round one, also Fern Bay gathered up a total of 33 drivers, from which few left before end of qualifying. 30 cars were standing on the grid, representing 19 different models in this colorful field. Again the Ultimate Road Car proved to be also quite ultimate in race, beating the competition - despite being drawn for 4 entrants, only one showed up.

The only URC driver who attended was Mantas, who scored his 2nd pole position in row,at least this time his connection held up and despite losing track position early in lap,he finished lap 1 as a leader, leading also rest of the race to finish with over 27 seconds gap over competition. The remaining podium finishers made it very variating as each of them had different drivetrain layout - Fast with the AWD driven RB4 had the chance to enjoy race lead for most of lap 1,but could not complete it,dropping down to 2nd position, kept until finish line, repeating his round 2 finishing position. FWD cars field was led by R.Kardol, who had stronger competition than last tuesday in FXO at RTFR,he finished 3rd for the 2nd race in row at RandomCar.

Despite finishing outside podium positions,V.Lagooga keeps his lead in series standings, but it was cut to half as his countryman Fast closed up by 3 points. A.Valta is still 3rd,but lost another 2 points to table leader.

With a new points count record in a single round,S1dus increased their lead in teams standings,RGA lost 10 points in last round and is now 23 points behind, after their driver winning this round,B2R took over 3rd position in teams standings. Lithuania scored even more points and keeps up dominating Nations standings, now 30 points ahead of Finland, one driver nation Luxembourg jumped into 3rd position. 3 wins in 3 rounds puts URC1 in dominating lead in Manufacturers championship, the LFS's home made FXO took over 2nd position, but has already 21 points gap,3 points ahead of 3rd position Talot.

Round 4 might turn things around as the upcoming track has higher average speed than 3 previous - Kyoto National in reversed direction is expected to have around 15km/h higher average speed, giving other cars more chances. Also the winning car will receive another set of additional ballast for next round, hopefully slowing it down a bit. Also let's see what car will be voted as next addition to the league, voting will start this weekend on our discord server. Next week it's back to usual business - in RTFR there will be a slick tyre car on the menu, more details will be posted on the weekend.

Race statistics / RTFR .mpr folder / Event rating and other statistics (will be updated later this week)

Quote from three_jump :Session: Race
Lap/MPR time: 1:04 onwards (end of lap 2)
Involved drivers: #1: kyr1l?, #2: Three Jump
Description of incident: braking zone at the end of the straight; #1 drives (accelerates?) right into the rear of car #2 causing #2 to spin off.

After regaining control after the slide,Kyr1l's controls show significant throttle input despite being on braking zone with car directly ahead, which leads to a contact.

* PENALTIES :
kyr1l? - receives 15 seconds penalty added to his finish time for avoidable contact causing multiple position loss. This is a custom penalty to place the driver behind his victim on race results.

- - - - - - - - - -

For 2 weeks in different RTFR versions we raced 2 FWD cars - last week it was the "simple" UF1,this week the turbocharged coupe FXO. As always, the car was heavy on it's front tyres, forcing drivers to take care of those as overloading them would mean sacrificing pace. A total of 33 drivers joined for qualifying session, however 3 of them left and did not take their earned grid spot, another 3 retired before reaching half distance, being scored as not finished.

R.Kardol proved his advantage with this car by winning the 3rd RTFR race with FXO in row - it took 7 laps for him to chase the polesitter and pass him to take over lead for remaining 16 laps. That was his 17th RTFR race win,13th fastest lap of the race and 73rd top 5 finish. The driver who keeps changing his name all the time scored his 16th pole position by being 0.09 seconds faster than race winner in qualifying, but could not keep up the pace in race and lost lead, finishing 2nd to score also his 16th top5 finish. With some banana boost the WCL driver Monke climbed up 2 positions to finish 3rd,which is his 21st top5 finish. The 2023 season 1 standings leader lost a position to finish 4th,scoring his 42nd top5 finish,P.Koivunen used mishaps of others to climb into 5th place - that's his 4th top5 finish.

VOD at Youtube:

Next week RTFR server will be used for different event - it's the 3rd round of our newest creation RandomCar,where the cars line up has been increased to 20. Until then the server is set up with combo of next (76th) RTFR XL for laptime testing purposes - POCHETE 118 GT3 at Westhill North RGE layout, previously used in 250th RTFR with FBM. The race itself will take place in 3 weeks. But in 2 weeks next normal RTFR will use one of the race spec cars - hints about which and where can be seen and heard if carefully watching the broadcast recording.

That's why the option is called "per guest" and not "per server" - if you're not aiming to host some AI racing, then leaving it at 1 is more than enough as guest can drive only 1 car. Each of max possible 47 guests.
