Quote from dawesdust_12 :... He didn't need to have a licence to win the car.

I guess what he meant was that Jay's LFS experience made him more likely to win the competition. I don't think the non-LFSers stood much of a chance really.

Quote from Mike Bingo :Did anyone buy Victor a beer?

And did you manage to lure out of him some interesting information about LFS? I feel that I know way too little about how the team works, how they arrange things inbetween themselves and all that stuff.. that's what I would ask Victor about if I met him. (I'd imagine he could talk about general stuff like that without feeling pressed to reveal secrets about future plans etc..?)

Quote from danowat :Theres a MASSIVE difference in something being ready to show at a games convention (or any convention for that matter) and something that is ready for public consumption.

Why is that, exactly? Why would Volkswagen allow a poorly modelled, unfinished version of their car to be used in a promo event? Wouldn't they require the modelling to be as accurate and real as possible? What if some of the people at the convention tried the car in LFS and said "hey, this car handles like rubbish, I'll never buy this!"? How could that be good for VW?

I think it will happen when he accelerates out of a junction and forces the engine up to 7500RPM (like in LFS), which the poor Proton can't handle, so the engine breaks and bits and pieces go flying everywhere. Then a sprocket hits him square between the eyes and his head explodes.

Nah, I think you'll be fine. Driving on a road is so much different from racing (real or sim) that you won't confuse the two. As long as you satisfy your "hunger for speed" through LFS you'll be allright.

I just want to say THANK YOU to the devs for working on this! Take your time making it perfect, we all know it will be worth the wait.

Hello!

I used this program before with great success. However after I formatted my PC and installed LFS again it isn't working anymore.. When I start the program I get the error message "The program was not initialized properly. Error oxc0000135"

Has anyone else encountered this? Help would be appreciated!

G25, right foot always here. I hear some G25-owners use LFB also at times, but to me that just sounds too weird.. plus, I've ordered the nixim brake mod, so using left foot braking will be pretty much out of the question then I guess.

You could try playing around with the sensitivity a little. I use low smoothing and low sensitivity, so that I have to turn my head quite a lot to make the camera move. That way I can look quickly to the sides, but also I won't accidentally loose focus.

I'm now finally back in town!! That means I'm back to my G25, and I've been trying out FreeTrack a little. The cap is working just fine, and the tracking is fine. However my problem is that I'm playing on a laptop with a very poor screen ( ), which can't quite cope with quick yawing. I get pretty bad tearing at times, which is a little distracting. However I'll try activating vsync later and see if that helps. Right now I'm debating whether I should buy a Rinoseat or not.. however the first priority will be to get new headphones -- the ones I have just died on me, so I can't really play at the moment.

I think the camera should be more or less straight in front of you, yes.. but you can always play around with it and see what happens. For all I know it might work just fine. (I'm guessing that the sensitivity in turning left/right would be unequal, though)

How about strapping the camera to a desktop lamp or a bookshelf or something?

Sorry for derailing the thread, but I figured I'd ask here — I imagine I am not the only one interested.

You're not. I've been wondering the same thing. Most of what I've seen so far have been bashing contests between the LFS and rFactor camps, which isn't really bringing us anywhere. Maybe Niels or someone else with one leg in each camp can shed some light.

Heh, if you're used to 270 degrees in LFS or something I guess that could be quite a transition. Good luck though. And remember, extending your raceline into the oncoming lane is generally considered bad practice.

In case someone is interested, here is the profile that I've made for LFS. Here is the one I use for flight sims. As you'll notice they're quite different, but it's really easy to adjust the sensitivities in the different directions.

I'm pretty sure I've seen a thread about a vest which contains such pads.. I think it was only for the torso though. Sorry, I don't remember the name or manufacturer. Anyone know?

I really love chocolate.. but only the dark kinds. However, once you go above 80% cocoa it gets too much for me. The bitter tastes seem to become more prominent around here.

My favourite is a dark Nestlé chocolate which they sold at Svalbard in 400 gram packages. Can't remember the exact name, but I haven't found it in mainland Norway.

Quote :Gnomie, have you had the chance to actually try it with LFS yet? And if so, what are your impressions?

Yes, I've tried it briefly. I don't have my wheel here, but I played a little (using a mouse) just to see how it works.

A good thing is that FreeTrack allows non-linear relationship between the number of degrees you turn your head in reality and the turning of the head in LFS. You can set this relationship as you please. (see image)

I'd imagine that many people would like a low sensitivity in the near-forward region (say, plus/minus 10 degrees or something) to look at the apex and mirror and such, and then a more snappy movement to get to 90 degrees quickly to look beside you to see who's coming up next to you. And yes, FreeTrack allows quick and responsive enough tracking for this to be possible.

So, in short: I am convinced that it is possible for anyone to create a profile in FreeTrack that meets their requirements for LFS. When I get back home (in about a month) I'll start playing LFS again with the cap, and I'll let you know how that works out.

Quote from Richie Cahill :Best 200 Euro I've ever spent, regardless of whether I suck or no.

Yep, totally agree. It's given me so many hours of fun... and I've only had mine for six months. I miss it terribly now that I'm on summer vacation for two months.

I did some experimenting with FreeTrack a while ago. As you'll know, for FreeTrack all you need is a webcam on your PC + an LED somehow strapped to your head. (one LED --> two degrees of freedom, while three LEDs --> six degrees of freedom). I was using just one visible LED. The results were mediocre at best, but they sparked my interest. I knew it was possible to make your own tracking device, but I have no clue about soldering and stuff, so I kind of discarded the whole thing.

Then, recently, I stumbled upon a guy in the US selling pre-built caps with built-in infrared LEDs. I thought it would end up being terribly expensive, but I only paid a little over $20 (shipping included), and with the weak dollar these days it became very affordable. Here are some pics:

I haven't had a chance to try it with LFS yet as I'm on vacation, but I'm totally blown away by how well it performs in flight sims. Since the LEDs are infrared, I've strapped on a visible light filter in front of my webcam to avoid too much background noise interfering with the tracking (just a piece of the inside of a floppy disk -- it's great for the job!). The tracking is flawless and responsive, and the cap is very comfortable. Can't wait to try it out with LFS!

I know that the TrackIR-fans keep saying that their system is better because it has more FPS than a normal webcam can allow. But seriously, I notice absolutely no lag at all. 30FPS is more than enough for smooth, precise movement. And the next version of FreeTrack will also include support for using a WiiMote instead of a webcam for tracking, which gives you 120FPS. Plus, FreeTrack is -- well -- free.

All in all, I'm extremely positively surprised at how well both the software, and particularly the cap, are working. I'd definitely recommend you guys to give it a go. If someone wants the contact information to the guy making the cap, just drop me a PM.
