If I'm using all 3 pedals I RFB almost always. If I just need to dab the brakes I'll LFB to save time but thats the only time I really use it. Started doing this almost a year ago, now RFB feels as natural as LFB does. It has affected my driving style though, I don't trail brake as much and always have my foot back on the throttle just before the apex, my laptimes have only improved since going to 3 pedals though.

If I'm in a single seater I switch to the paddles and auto clutch, and thus always LFB. For road cars/GTR's though 3 pedals, H shifter & RFB is always used. IRL its rare I LFB, normally end up stabbing it a bit too hard.

If you'd like it to be battery powered, 4 decent rechargable NIMH AA's will run 4.8-4.9v which is fine for the servo and should also be perfectly fine for the circuit. Thus no voltage divider needed, and the AA holders can be had for around £1.00 as they're very common in nitro RC's to power the servo's etc. You can run servo's off as low as 3-4v if necessary as I've found out from RC.

Personally if/when I go ahead with it, I'll use mains power. Its only one more cable running down the back of the desk.

You what what the best feature about the new WTCC "Race" game is? It has a functional windscreen wiper!

It does annoy me a bit that you never see public servers racing in the evening - many people moan about having no night racing, but no-one does evening racing which is fun for the reasons mentioned above.

You won't break the plastic housing on the G25 pedals. And feet size has nothing to do with it, although I'm a bit annoyed with size 13 feet its still a pain to heel/toe with them.

Dude just invest in the G25, you won't beat its valuve for money. Its a lot less hassle than what your thinking of, and you end up with a 2yr warranty on everything which is immensely useful (espically for me as mine broke yesterday!).

I play LFS purely for enjoyment/entertainment. No other reason. If I didn't enjoy it I wouldn't still be racing a few times a week after a good couple of years of playing. Having realistic physics etc all matter to me because they make it more fun and more enjoyable.

I look at it this way, if a game was released tomorrow, that had even more realistic physics, and an even more accurate tyre model, but wasn't fun or stimulating to drive - perhaps because no online play, or because it looks/sounds like something from 1994, or maybe it only has dull and uninspired tracks, and a community full of elitiest gits, would you still play it like you play LFS?

:ices_rofl Nice work, looks so out of place in LFS but it looks good

Sometimes its worth paying that few quid extra to have it there and then, and of course if a problem develops you can return it to the store instead of sitting on the phone for half an hour.

Panasonic SC-AK520 sits on my desk. IMO its a brilliant unit for the price, clear & precise, and has enough base to shake your toilet seat loose if you really want. I could do with a better soundcard though, there's a small but noticable drop in quality between an MP3 coming from the PC and the same one off an MP3 CD - I put it down to my onboard Realtek sound. But I don't fancy spending £150 on a better one

You mean the wires between the servo & the controller? Servo's use a standard 3 pin plug, normally referred to as JR compatible. Sweet find btw, now to find out if they ship international..

Thousands you say..any decent Nurburgring re-creations for GPL that'd work on that demo? TBH thats half the reason I brought GT4, and why I still play it.

Looks like the sky texture has been darkened so it looks closer to nighttime in the game. Simpler to do than editing it in afterwards. But night-time texture mods are a bit pointless till we get proper dynamic lighting for headlights etc.

After using DaveWS's soundpack quite a bit this week, I've noticed the XRT has a bit of crackling/interference, more noticable on my headphones but its there with the stereo as well. The UF1 sounds a bit like the source sample was too low quality as well - sorta washed out sound. And the RB4 has an unusually loud/linear wind noise above ~90mph. But other than these small problems the soundpack is brilliant, makes LFS that bit more enjoyable

I can't remeber the name of some of the demos I used to play, it must have been when I was around 7-8 though. I distinctly remeber playing World Rally Fever & Big Red Racing a few years later when I was about 10, mostly because I got them as birthday gifts

I would be very interested to hear of such a USB controller as well - I have an old Audi 80 cluster waiting for me to throw a couple of small servo's in if it can be done without too much cost.

Currently on my desktop, in order of how often I play them:

Live For Speed
Need for speed Carbon
Richard Burns Rally
GTR2
Need For Speed Underground 1
Race demo (hmm reminds me I need to uninstall that..)

Few I play on the PS2:

GT4 (so its not realistic but who gives a you know what)
Enthusia (IMO it shown a massive amount of potential and even a bit of innovation, but was a complete sales flop)
Burnout Takedown & Revenge

Whoever put that video together is frickin brilliant at what he does. Not seen an LFS video put together that good in a long time.

SatCP, no doubt more games will support the G25's full capabilities eventually but Act Labs made software that allowed games not designed with clutch/H shifting in mind to work with them. Pretty nifty stuff.

Not that theres a shortage of games supporting G25 already - any Simbin/Blimey title, LFS & NFSC.

Maybe this is straying off topic a bit, but:

Act Labs Pedals:

+ Much better pedal travel
+ Quicker to get apart
+ Much better pedal positioning for heel/toe
+ Clutch works in more games. Same for the Act Labs shifter
+ Stay in place on wood flooring a lot better
+ Pedal base is bigger, and nicer to rest your left foot on between changes (Rubber instead of plastic IIRC)
+ Spare parts are very readily available and cheap
+ Cable goes straight into back of PC, doesn't need to run over desk
+ Can be modded for adjustable spring tension very easily apparently
- Construction isn't as good (G25's all alloy internals are nice and shiny )
- Pedal base is a less rigid plastic so "creaks" a bit sometimes
- Clutch spring tension isn't as good as G25

G25 Pedals:

+ All alloy construction inc swing arms
+ Better spring tension, once broken in
+ Proper coil type springs
+ Better sealed
+ 2yr warranty
+ Carpet grip system
+ Mount points for frames etc
+ Only 1 USB port for everything
+ Works on PS2 as well as PC (One of my main motivations to switching to G25 in the end)
+ Could make a custom pedal base much easier, each pedal is a self contained unit
- Much less pedal travel
- Spares not available - springs, pedal faces etc
- Have to take pedal faces off to remove the base
- Base moves about more on wood unless you brace it against a wall
- My throttle pedal was loose when it arrived, had to have apart from the word go
- Cable length is a lot shorter
- Cable has to run up to desk, then back down to back of computer
- Smaller base (I guess that'd be a + for some)
- Can't heel/toe as easy

Now I'm used to the G25 pedals I prefer them overall, although the short travel is still annoying as is the positioning - I've had to turn blip on downshift back on.

On the shifter comparision btw, I'd prefer the Act Labs one if it had shorter shifts, wasn't angled on top (feels like driving an SUV when you have it mounted down low), and used a better mounting system. It feels nicer to use, can have a proper gearknob mounted on, and has a real H pattern. No pushdown reverse though, I really like that on the G25's Again I prefer the G25's because it feels better mounted low and the shorter shifts. Feels very loose and not as natural as the AL one though.

Damnit, whenever I see pics of the ring in GT4 I wanna play it. Shame I can't play it for more than 30 mins here and there till I get bored and play LFS instead. Some very nice pics btw, shame the game doesn't actually look like that

No its not stealing or theft, that would imply you took something from the author or copyright holder, which you didn't. How some people can say downloading music is theft of the same type as someone who breaks into your home, is beyond me. But it is copyright infringement and still bad, immoral & illegal.

Personally, I'll freely admit I download music from the web (not Limewire though..what a load of junk), if the album is good I'll purchase it legally, if its not I delete it. The only money the artists loose from me is that I don't spend money on crap music anymore. You may not agree with this but I pay more for music than I probably otherwise would if I couldn't see if it was any good first.

Thanks everyone for the advice - espically Bob & Biggie for the very detailed posts, lots of really good info there. Hopefully it'll help more than just me as well, there has to be other occational late night gamers out there I've decided to take a set of Beyerdynamic DT231 Galactics's off Bob's hands - they sound like they should give good quality espically for the price. A lot of the recommendations in this thread are beyond my budget at the sec but if I decide I want some higher end ones after trying these I'll definately keep them in mind.

TBH when I started this thread I had no idea they could cost so much, a "decent" pair of headphones from a good manufacture costs about the same as a reasonable full blown home stereo. Crazy stuff. Wonder if they'll sound better than my stereo for gaming, I thought it sounded very impressive for the price..

If LFS had proper clutch/gearbox simulation I'd be in heaven right now. Will have a play with the DXTweak app tomorrow, sounds promising as a short term solution to the clutch. Still not gotten used to it biting from the instant you start releasing it.

Wonder if the ability to stall cars could be done in a compatible patch..don't see why not, the code is already there to turn the engine on/off..
