I have long hair and wear shorts 365 days a year. You do your do, I'll do mine.

Seriously, look this driver up and run with him.

OK...

There are two others getting my ire up at this moment. I have not yet sent replays because it's not really my style. Plus, racing these clowns has allowed me to learn new techniques on the track.

But this driver is truly talented. Never knocks himself out, but always knocks out the opponent. Is quick enough to work through advanced fields. Has a well thought out and practiced technique.

This one should be infamous. This one should have a web site.

Oh yeah... you were there.

I get a huge kick out of his racing philosophy too. He backs up every move with well considered intention.

All I'm saying is watch for this driver. Inspect the finese with which he/she negotiates the field. It is truly artful and amazing.

Then, if you want a real treat. Ask Dolistad for his/her philosophy on winning races.

Blew my mind.

Quote from Jon Andersen :¨
Some of us like to present ourself with our real names. We have nothing to hide. We are not ashamed of what we do on track or in chat. Nicks come and go easy. Real names do not.

I came from the GPL community. Way back then, we used our own names. We became a bunch of people that will never forget eachother - because we know eachother as Eldred Pickett, Greger Huttu, Gabor Weber, Andreas Wilke etc. How can you remember a person calling himself (---(2F@St)&wItH$iNsIgHt---)? And how can you distingwish him from the nick "FooL3D y0u"?

Yeah but, when your name is Huttu, Weber, Wilke, etc. You say, "I'm Huttu! Go look at my -720 Rank. I got a 5:39 at the Ring."

When your name is Jeangerard you say, "GPL Rank? I think I saw that site once. I... er... I couldn't figure out how to upload my times. Yeah, that's it. I'm not on there. Don't look for me."

Joking aside. Jan Verschueren, Mark Seery, Asgeir Nesoen, Jim Gary, Mike Barlow, Bruce Kennewell, Greg Duncan, Tim Dignan, Greg Renner, Tore Hanson, Art McEwen, Oliver Nikolic, Chaz Wood, Tino Salooman, Trevor Mack, George Smiley, Fulvio Policardi, Uwe Schuerkamp, Ryk Penfold, Pascal Desjardins, Joe Rudynski, etc.

Sure, not all the quickest guys in the world, but every one of them dead solid. And I do remember their names. I remember races and dices, and victory and defeat. Advice and commaraderie still streams through my head.

I started with Slartibartfast from the first LFS download. At that time, for all I knew, it was going to be another F1RS. I guess when I bought my license I didn't think to change it.

Yeah. I agree. I'd pay £20 a year just for continued patches. This patch thing is the second most fun I've ever had with a software title.

There really was no hidden question. I was just flabbergasted when people started in on a racer that I know is top of the heap. Based solely on a statement that indicated high lap times. LOL

Restarts? Yeah. Every time I post anywhere on the internet, music forums, private emails, here... I always have the urge to shout:

NO RESTARTS!

It's just a thing I have stuck in my head. illepall

My first online experience was with GPL. (Well, actually, it was a few before that, but GPL is where I really cut my teeth.) If anyone remembers, GPL did not have restarts. Not voted, anyway. It was a hassle to invoke one. I raced with a league that did 45 minute to 2 hour races only. We all learned to drive in a certain mindset. I guess I'm an old fart stuck in my ways.

At L1 T1 I'm still only thinking of the checkered flag. Which, for all intents and purposes, is a long way off.

And as far as having a point goes... Does every post have to contain a coherent idea? For crying out loud, every one's a critic....

I had a problem with a command I didn't, and still don't, understand. It's in the Graphics menu under my particular video card.

Simple Track (No car shadow) |Off|Scenery|All|

I'm assuming that at one point I read that and thought, "Great, *simple* and *no car shadow* and *all* equals better performance.

Then I forgot I clicked it and spent a week frustrated with frame rates of 10. When I finally clicked it back to "OFF" my rates went back up to the normal 50 to 80 range.
Raceism and Weakness

I noticed something today that I've noticed before. It never really sank in until I saw it happen to someone I have a huge amount of respect for. I call it LFS Raceism.

Now, you may not know much about me, so here's a quick rundown. What I am looking for in the perfect driver is consistency. Someone you can count on. Attitude, style, line, aggression, speed, conduct... motor racing is a gentleman's sport. Sure, LFS is a video game and there really is nothing at stake. But it is a simulation of motor racing, where EVERYTHING is at stake. I prefer to imagine we are really racing real cars. So my hero, is of course, someone of like mindset. Let's call my hero Racer #1.

My personal LFS hero showed up at a full server and jokingly proclaimed, "Can someone help me get into the 1:03s here? I'm stuck in the 4s."

This is a track where 1:01 is the mark in the marque of the day. Racer#1 is fully capable of running 01s until the cows come home. The race starts and the first message is, "Racer#2 - Racer #1 is a Spanish idiot."

A squabble ensues with the typical, "No I'm not." "Yes you are." "I'm not even Spanish." "You're still and idiot." Bleh...

Now I know it's football season and patriotic tempers are flairing, but we get to the meat of the situation at this point. Racer #2 exclaims that Racer #1 has to be an idiot because 1:04s are all that Racer #1 can manage.

WHAT!?!?!

I've seen this soooo much online. The slow driver is dragged over the coals for that, and only that. It is predjudice. Plain and simple. Bigotry of the lowest form. (If bigotry has a lower form than it's base self.) Then a large group of people on the server started bashing Racer #1 and voting to kick based on the assumption that Racer #1 must suck because anyone doing 1:04s deserves no consideration. People started blaming Racer #1 for incidents that were a half a lap away from Racer #1.

What makes this situation so absurd are that facts that Racer #1:
  • Is not Spanish.
  • Is blindingly quick.
  • Is bogglingly consistent.
  • Can drive cleanly in the most insane situations.
  • Has the ultimate respect for every person racing LFS. (At least that I've seen. And since stalking seems to be the sublect of the day, I will admit that I do stalk Racer #1 a bit. I'm messmerized by Racer #1s performance at ALL TIMES. I've never seen anything short of the highest conduct.)
  • When you are on track with Racer #1 there is never even a hint of unseemly conduct. Racer #1 makes legitimate moves. You quickly learn that this driver will not knock you out. Ever. When moves are good, Racer #1 advances. When they don't go as planned Racer #1 backs out safely and attacks at a more opportune moment.
  • Racer #1 will clean your clock on a regular basis.
  • You will smile when you see how gracefully it's done.
Yeah, I guess in the end it's a laughable situation.

...and since I'm on a rant. Here's my usual:

Voting to restart during a race is a show of weakness. Oh... boo hoo... things didn't go as you planned. Start over so they can go poorly again... and again... and again...

Why not be strong? Drive a proper line. Drive with respect of the leading cars position. Take your opportunities when they are realistic.

Face it, the more time you spend on track trying to not hit other people, the better you will get at just that. Restarting every thirty seconds teaches you nothing. Restarting at the very moment you slip from your favored position teaches you one thing. It teaches you to be weak. To give up the fight. To take advantage of chance only.

Be strong. Fight cleanly for your position. When things don't go your way, lower your head and run like the wind. PBs will follow. You may come in 10th. But you will be stronger for it.

...or you can just vote to restart. Too bad LFS doesn't have a "race to T1" mode. You'd all be winners.

So...

Somebody did give me a server.

GURU has graciously offered the use of one of their servers for some RWD fun.

GURU|RWD Sanctuary

Is the name of the server. White letters, red pipe. Look for it at your local internet LFS server.

Now, I know squat about servers, or serving, or computers for that matter. But I'm willing to learn. At this point in time I am insanely busy. My immediate goal is to start running organized races. No leagues, just public races. When I get the time I will make a basic web site to anounce times. I think the same race, six times in a weekend would be cool. Results posted on the site. As I said before, bragging rights only. No points or anything silly like that. Just racing and comparing yourself against your peers.

I will change the track once a week or so until I can figure out all this statistical nonsense. Any help on where I might find tools will be greatly appreciated.

So if you like RWD, want to get some fun, and know there is a RWD server... There is. Right now it's set to WE International Reverse. All RWD cars are available. We've been testing out there. It's really, really sweet in RWD cars. Get out there and get some. I'll be in touch about organized events as soon as I get enough time to breath.

If you aint sideways, you aint livin'.

Quote from skiingman :Curious, I just moved to NM (I'm at UNM) and got the Comcast cable modem. Throughput isn't all that great, but it beats DSL and the pings are excellent. Costs me 120 bucks a semester...fairly cheap. I've had a bunch of ISPs over the years, and I'd say there uptime is typical. One period it was down for three days, but it wasn't their fault (Uni wouldn't give them access to the dorm to fix a problem)

Hey, Skiingman! I work at Santa Fe Ski Basin in the winters. That means I get passes and rentals and stuff. We should have an LFS party on the snow. (Without the LFS.) It would be cool to meet another LFSer in person. (Although I am probably older than most of your proffesors.)

Quote : Why are you going to go with DSL?

To the east, 75 yards from me, across hwy. 528 is serviced by Comcast. Everything east of 528 from Alameda to Bernalillo is in fact serviced. 250 yards from me to the south, across the arroyo is service by Comcast. Everything south of the arroyo is in fact serviced by Comcast. 2 miles north, service. West, nothing. I mean nothing. Desert to Gallup.

When I call Comcast and ask when my neighborhood might be included, they chuckle and say things like, "Don't hold your breath."

I'm stuck with US Quest and they signed a deal with a former governer when the federal laws were much more relaxed and pretty much have this place tied up. Their lousiest DSL is as much as Comcast. The next step up is highway robbery, and the prices sky rocket from there.

Because they can.

You can ask anyone I drive with regularly. I have no problem whatsoever anticipating and catching slides. You might even say that's my style. Sliding.

A few years ago I was able to test several large and small sims both with and without FF by way of running into large facilities with both broken and working force cockpits and wheels. Also tried FF with GP3 and GPL. I'm positive I get a better read from the car *without* FF. For me, it's simply too loud and slow. It's masks the minute details modern computers are able to communicate with sound and video.

That being said, I bought my TSW Sport in November of 1998. (Hmmm... that's and interesting time to buy a high priced wheel, eh?) Since then I have replace the pots maybe six times. They get them out in days, every time. There was a crack in one of the levers that hook up the pedals to the pots. TSW sent an entire replacement pack free as they decided to use a different material. No problems since, except that I have an analog game cable coming from it. Not TSWs fault that Windows XP doesn't recongnize analog game ports correctly, but as soon as I send my wheel in, they will rebuild it to modern spec for the price of parts. Pretty cool if you ask me.

This is the absolute truth: My wheel feels and opperates EXACTLY as it did in November of 1998. Consistency is the pay off. I never, ever think about my wheel. It's just a part of me. Matter of fact, I am falling apart faster than the wheel. (Oy! My aching knee.)

So, for something a little less than the ECCI, like, about two 3rds the price, TSW is a very good choice. BTW, the Sport is a very basic package. No frills. You can frill until you're blue in the face if you care to spend the dough.

The ECCI pedals are looking very, very interesting.

Anyone else get this? Or know how to get it?

I installed Q and went straight to an online server. Went to the pits, picked my setup, hit the track, and sitting in my stall I was sort of forced to notice the suspension view, just like the one in the pits, taking up the entire right half of my screen. Top to bottom. Looked around in options for a while, no button. Hit every F key and probably most of my letter keys and Shift and CTRL and letter keys. Nothing. The suspension view was still there. In the garage and out, left the server and returned. Still the suspension view covering half my screen. I left the server, went to replay, nothing. Mo more suspension view. Went back to the track, it was still gone.

What button is it? I really want to see the suspension during replays.

Well... aaaaactually....

I'm finishing up a project right now that's worth a few bucks. Payday is coming, and no one leaves here with the masters until I'm paid in full. (On the other hand, I have a closet full of finished product that no one has paid for, or heard for that matter.)

So....

If I get paid, I'm getting me two new monster computers. Then I will have two 1.4 gig Athlons with a half gig O' ram each just sitting. Doing nothing. Unless I make them into a server or something. (On the other hand, it takes me two full days to install a USB keyboard.)

Then...

I'm getting broadband. I'll ask here about what the killer-diller modem is, buy that, spend a week yelling at it, then I'll be hooked up sorta like you guys. (On the other hand, I live in Podunk, New Mexico and the only thing available is DSL from a VERY questionable telnet company that has a pair of sweat deals in the only two states left that allow them to run roughshod all over their paying *customers*. Can you say, "monopoly"?)

So...

We'll see.

I'm liking the news about automation.
