Well, it was the only race during out two-week stay in Florida, so I took the opportunity to go. Got decent seats too, I've been told. Besides, raceday atmosphere is not conveyed on tv whichever way you twist it. I'm gonna enjoy it, and my boys are likely to enjoy it as well.
Well, about people turning up the FFB... They did SOMETHING to the tires. The releasentes mention adjusted tire carcass damping, and that might be what we're feeling. But I checked, and the FFB peaks are still as high as before, so adjusting the FFB up will introduce severe clipping. So they filter out the FFB excitement, I'm guessing to tone down the pitstall wheelshake.
Wrong way around, imo. Fix the problem, not the symptoms.
GT5 brakes can lock the wheels whatever tires you put on, and there is no brakefade. What is the value of upgradeable brakes beside some text in your modsheet?
A bodykit I can understand, you see that in the replays, but brakes...?
Make sure you check the troubleshooting forum over at ISI. There are some nescessary tweaks to be done to make the software behave at least somwheat properly for most people.
I've played it quite a bit over the weekend too, and I absolutely LOVE it. Tried the old F1 at classic Spa, and it's GPL all over again, only better. The way you can feel the tires working FOR you and gripping the road, and the way you can so easily control the car on and over the edge with the throttle is just phenomenal. Alos love the way the brakes and tires feel when cold compared to warm, there's a real difference in character. Add in the fact that it feels feature-finished instead of Alpha like LFS and iracing, and I think we have a winner.
Think back to the first rFactor cars, and then a few years ahead to the later mods, I can't wait to see mods that use all the potential in this sim.
Liek I said, my screen is 106" (230cm wide) and I sit around that distance away from it. It is also curved slightly. That is on the edge of 1080P territory.
Also, having three screens means iRacing (and LFS) can render one view for each screen so you don't get any distortion like you would on a flat image surface.
I don't even see the bezels any more, they never bothered me.
I only use a Sony VPL-HW30ES, so not very high-end. But still lightyears more costly than my triplescreen setup.
And regarding the 115degree FOV, you'd need to sit really close or have a huge image to pull that off, and 1080P wouldn't be anywhere near enough for a smooth image.
Edit: Did some quick calcs, and if I'm not terribly mistaken you'd need a 6meter wide image and be seated 2m distant for anything near 115degree FOV. That is going to look ugly at 1080P
It's a matter of FOV alone. In my setting I can have EITHER wide FOV (eyefinity, 130deg FOV) OR 3D (projector, 85deg fov). I greatly prefer a wide FOV over 3D. If I could have both I'd take it.
Image size has nothing to do with this. A huge screen seen from farther away can have alot less FOV than a small display up close. Also, the triplescreen display give you some 'free' FOV since the side screens are at an angle.
I've tried it on my cinema setup, and I much prefer the triplescreen setup. The 3D doesn't make up for the 35-40 degrees less FOV, imo. I have a 106" screen, around 7' viewing distance, soI get around 85 degrees FOV in my setup. The racing rig give me 130degrees and immersion is much better. The 'larger than life' feel of the projector setup ruin it for me.
Wow. I drove a race and been doing some practice in it, and I really thought it had the OTM, it felt somewhat believeable. I've even had some nice fourwheel drifts and some slides that I could catch. If you get the backend too far out there's no catching it, though. I accredited that to running out of steering lock, but I haven't analyzed what really happens.
It slides LESS, but not at all predictably or realistically.
I wish we'd come off the "harder is more realistic" thing years ago, but it seems that one is here to stay....
These kinds of threads are what makes me come to this forum! I love it!
This stuff really make me get a better appreciation of what goes into a sim, and I can really understand why mass produced sims like rFactor get it wrong. That a high-profile sim like iRacing does is unforgiveable, though. DK should know this stuff, and probably do. So why did he still make is so, I wonder?
