Making DX10 Vista only must have been one of the worst decisions Microsoft ever made. There isn't really anything wrong with DX10, some parts are even better performance wise too considered to DX9.
But anyway the worst thing is that it puts developers in to bad position, especially in LFS' case. Developers really can't skip DX9 because DX10 is not available on all systems and going DX9 only is a bit "old fashioned" because the replacement is already available. Using both isn't very good either, because you basically have to do double the work to keep both versions up to date. [/offtopic]
On-topic: As others have said the current automatic gearbox in LFS currently is not a real autobox. There has been some speculation (non-offical) about a real autobox, but adding it in my opinion could be a waste of time since it would still probably be inferior to manual (except maybe on the drag strip, but it might still be slower there if power loss would be taken in to account). Maybe if a car with automatic as the only option would be added, then it would make sense.
Yeah, but it doesn't really matter. The FFB is usually pushing pretty hard already when you reach the end of rotation, so it's hard to even notice the soft stops if you have them on. Also you really shouldn't be hitting the end of rotation in normal situations anyway.
Probably DX9 had a minimum requirement of 4096*4096 so GPU manufacturers didn't bother to go any higher. With DX10 they increased the minimum so they updated the hardware.
IIRC Scawen said while ago that due to the recent change to DirectSound should make implementing 3D-sound easier. So we might actually see (or rather hear) it at some point.
It's only problem if you only have two screens. Then the bezels of the monitors are right in middle of the view, so it really is obstructing. Three screens are much better because the bezels are on the sides and I have heard from many owners of such setups that you don't really notice them when playing.
So my recommendation is either 1 screen or 3 screens.
Conserning SLI and SoftTH. It works in theory. You need a third graphics card for the third monitor though. Altough last time I heard from someone trying it, it resulted in very bad framerates.
Something about the things involved how things work: Windows only supports hardware acceleration of graphics only on one graphics card which which is why need to use some trickery to get more than two screens accelerated.
TH2G tricks your computer to thinking that there is only one very wide monitor attached on a hardware level, which makes it pretty invisible to the rest of the hardware which in turn makes it work with pretty much anything.
SoftTH on the other hand tricks the computer same way, but on software level. It uses the primary graphics card to render the image and the other one simpy to display the image.
SLI tricks the computer to thinking that there is only one powrful graphics card so it can use both cards to render the image. That is done on software level. Which is probably why SoftTH has problems with SLI.
I am seriously considering this. It's what a laptop should be: portable. It's pretty cheap too, usually laptops that size cost ~2000€ or something. The downsides of it are of course the lack of performance, but I don't think it's going to be much of an issue for me. I wouldn't get it for a only computer though.
Whetever you should get this or not pretty much depends on for what you planning to use this laptop. If you are planning to play LFS on it, then you should look for something else
It's not a bad idea actually. Except the midrace joiners wouldn't have to be visible at all in my opinion. But anyway, it would be nice if people could join the race and practice without interfiering the ongoing race.
That's like saying "I know where I should have posted this, but I still chose to post it in the wrong place" or simply "I am stupid".
Besides there is nothing we can do anyway. Whoever the server owner decides to ban is his choice. He doesn't need a reason.
Scawen said that he chose BMP because it's the only format DX8.1 supports.
Save to PNG or JPG would probably need a third party library or heavy coding work. Anyway, neither of them is really a good option since PNGs would still need recompressing to make their size Internet compatible and JPGs wouldn't have perfect quality like you said. So yeah, BMP is not the perfect solution, but it's as close as we can get.
EDIT: I took a screenshot from LFS (1680x1050) and the size for the files are 5MB for BMP, 1,5MB for PNG and 0,2MB for JPG (quality 80, barely noticable difference). To download those files with a 1Mbps Internet connection it would take (in the same order): 50s, 15s and 2s.
PNG is not a very good choice for screenshots from LFS. JPEG is better suited for "analog" images like photos and screenshots from games, because the size will be a fraction of that of a PNG and there is no visible loss of quality. The size advantage outweighs the barely noticeable quality loss.
I do programming myself and I have found multiple screens rather usefull. You can have the resource material/debug window on another screen and the development tools on the other. I find alt-tabbing quite annoying, especially when you only want to have quick look at the material and do the code according to that. I don't like overlapping windows either, because you still have to go back and forth a lot.
But as you said it's a matter of personal preference, the reason my last post starts with imho (=in my humble opinion).
