F1: 2nd practice at Bahrain and 1st conclusions

Second practice is finished. It's perhaps a little bit early to draw conclusions but there are still some interesting things that happened. First of all ,and that could be very important to the qualifying and the race , turn7: Many drivers had problems in the braking zone of turn7, locking there front left tyre up and also some drivers had to take a wider line through it. This is surely one thing that is gonna important in the race as the tyres don't take lock ups to well. In the early stage of the practice Felippe Massa had this problem and when he went back to pits we could see on a close up of his tyres that they did look very bad. For Toyota it didn't go too well, some poeple supposed this after the winter practices, the car is just too slow so far. They've also had a technical break down on Trullis car (transmission hydraulics).
But not only Toyota had a break down, McLaren had also. 19min before the finish Kimi Räikkönen had to stop. So far the only information available is that it wasn't an engine damage.
Surely a surprise was that the Scuderia Torro Rosso was faster then expected. But if they can hold that speed in qualifying and race it will lead to some troubles as some opponents told (directly or undirectly) that they would file a protest if STR is faster then them. This has to do with the fact that STR uses restricted V10 engines from last year and that some poeple think that they are more powerfull than V8's.

Williams was also very fast hitting 3rd fastest lap.

Here are the times

1. Anthony Davidson (Honda) 1:31,353
2. Michael Schumacher (Scuderia Ferrari) 1:31,751
3. Alexander Wurz (Williams Cosworth) 1:31,764

I think we had the same problem back on the last MoE race. I remember that it was said in the live stream that FrankMd (i think it was) couldn't leave the server cause that would produce other drivers to disconnect too. Well I'm not sure about this, perhaps Frank could tell something about it.

This is it, the F1 season 2006 has officialy started.
First car on track was the Williams Cosworth of Alexander Wurz.
The first half of the practice was mainly a time fight from Alexander Wurz against Robert Kubica in the BMW Sauber. The 2nd half saw many installation laps and at the end also some times of the top drivers. As expected the Super Aguri F1's were very slow, but this is not their final car for this season (this will probably start on the european season). Noteworthy thing: There were so many reporters around the Ferrari pits that one could think Michael Schumacher is still world champion.
Also very interesting is that we saw many fights on the track, which is somewhat surprising
for a first practice.
On the engine side my personal impression is that ,though the V8 are slower ,they soundgreat .

Here are the times of the first practice:

1. Robert Kubica (BMW Sauber) 1:32,170
2. Alexander Wurz (Williams Cosworth) 1:32,184
3. Kimi Räikkönen (McLaren Mercedes) 1:33.388
4. Michael Schumacher (Scuderia Ferrari) 1:33.469
5. Christian Klien (Red Bull Racing) 1:34.800
6. Neel Jani (Scuderia Toro Rosso) 1:34.831
7. Juan-Pablo Montoya (McLaren Mercedes)1:34.887
8. Felippe Massa (Scuderia Ferrari) 1:34.925
9. David Coulthard (Red Bull Racing) 1:35.017
10. Vitantonio Liuzzi (Scuderia Toro Rosso) 1:35.083
11. Robert Doornbos (Red Bull Racing) 1:35.203
12. Scott Speed (Scuderia Toro Rosso) 1:35.371
13. Tiago Monteiro (Midland F1) 1:36.542
14. Christian Albers (Midland F1) 1:36.930
15. Markus Winkelhock (Midland F1) 1:37.918
16. Takuma Sato (Super Aguri) 1:38.190
17. Yuji Ide (Super Aguri) 1:40.782

Well he is not driving a GTR, he is driving the XR GT Turbo and this is a demo car. The actual WR on this car at BW GP is 1:22.790 (csimpok).

Congrats to the winners.
Well I'm pretty unhappy with our result, I had a nice 1st stint but after that everything went downhill. After my 1st stop I've lost my rythm doing stupid mistakes. After my 2nd stop I had an unfortunate crash with H. Piriiste. Had to pit again and didn't change the tyres what proved to be the wrong decision latter on. Cause of this accident my front right tyre lasted one lap less and I had a blown tyre in lap 50 (ironically on the same place where I had my accident before). Well and 5 min before the end of the race I also had a disconnect. So for our team and me it was a very hard weekend. Only positif thing I can see was our 10th place in quali and that we were the best FXR Team there.

Yep, there are some things missing, but i think you have hardly the time to notice it if your driving a race.

I agree, the setups on road cars most definatly need do be limited.

My longest race was the Master of Endu 24h Aston GP Event. Puted in hours I have done approx. 5 and a half hour.

Yep Strobe is right. Many people have a wild stage when they get their license.
Today for me it is like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hide: On public roads I'm driving extremly defensif but as soon as I have the possibility to take the car on a closed circuit, or when I'm driving on Karts I push on the limit.
But on public roads I see no sense in risking the life of others just because I think that I'm a great driver.

he he I know this problem too. Unfortunatly you can't fix it by setup

... you think what you can improve on your real cars setup while driving it.
... you calculate your fuel consumption and put only the amount needed when you drive to work
... you hold your throttle down while shifting
... you think it's the cop and robber mod when the police is driving behind you

Congrats to the winners, and also congrats to the good organization.

For our team (22 - ITEK) it was a great event, as it was the first big event we attendet to and we're also pretty happy with our result and performance. For me it was also something very special, as it was my first event I drove for the ITEK Racing Team (i'm only a team member since 1 and an half week) and I think it went ok.
We had no disconnects and that is surely one of the points that had a great impact on the whole result as there were many drivers with disconnects. This is unfortunate but it could happen to everyone.
It was nice attending to such a big event and surely something very special. The whole team talk and the whole ambient were something that surely was thrilling, but it isn't something that I would make every week as it is pretty exhausting .

At the end I want to thank my teammates for the great job they did and for letting me the chance to drive for them. Thumbs up

Edit: Will there be any downloadable Video of the Stream after the Race?

I think that should be enough, or not? Well Hoellsen you surely know how many poeple look at such a stream, cause you where involved in the moderation of the ESL finals. Can you tell us any numbers from there?

Yes it's clear that these tests are for reasonable drivers, or the ones who want to become reasonable drivers. For the ones that never drove any sims, so that they actually could learn how the driving techniques are. As this would facilitate there start in LFS. From time to time I find myself on a server where I'm running much faster than others, they then ask me for my setup, which im willingly share. What happens next: They still drive crap times because they just don't seem to know that there is something like an ideal line through a corner. I meant it for such poeple in the first place.

One things for sure: With seeing driving lines you don't get fast, you still have to practice.
Second thing: Wreckers will be wreckers, you can't change them by teaching them how to drive. (Actually there are also pretty fast wreckers out there.)
