TCP instead of UDP packets?

This is more of a stab in the dark question for those who are more in the know than I am about these things....

If I am not mistaken, at the moment LFS uses TCP and UDP packets. However, alot of people at the moment seem to be rather suceptible to packet loss over their broadband network, in particular UDP packets as they have no/less parity checking (correct terminology?). I am one of those people as you may have gathered from my thread in the Tech Help section.

So what I am suggesting is, is it possible to use soley TCP packets for LFS? If my quick research is correct, TCP has better protection/protocols for ensuring all data is properly sent/received.

This is probably one for all you Coders & Net Gurus out there, but to be honest probably only Scawen could answer this as it is his netcode! It was very good for me until now

I know this sounds a little bit selfish or silly to implement for such few people, but with so many ISPs overloading their networks these days packet losses will most likely become more and more apparent. Sadly I think it will only get worse in the near future as more and more people get connected and more demand is placed on the system.

So what are your thoughts/suggestions on this?

Also, don't just assume you can join any team if you ask. Most established teams will not let anyone join at the drop of a hat unless they are well known and respected by that team.

My advice would be to keep playing LFS, and possibly hang around with whatever teams you fancy and make yourself known to them. Once they have known you for a while, and have seen your driving you stand more chance of being invited or being allowed to join when you ask. Don't be offended if they say no either, maybe ask why they don't want you so that you can work on it for next time.

Good luck and have fun racing.

I'd love to go but would need to see how far away it's. Probaly cost me a small fortune to drive from here all the way to England

Well, i had a little look on multimap....and it will be one hell of a journey, but very much worth it i bet!

For the sake of not being stranded once I get down south, it is looking like driving is the best bet

Anyway, I will see how many Scots or northern folk we get to make the journey more interesting.

so why does a new patch always default back to windowed mode?

patches dont affect any other settings? i cant see any reason for it atm.

Logitech DFP for £55.86 (£61.50 ish Delivered). Thats about as cheap as I've ever seen it in the UK.

Three friends have been using DFP's in PC sims for a year or more, and no complaints or failures with them in that time.

i got my MOMO from there too. cheap as chips

Well, considering they cheekily nabbed the LFS slogan and tagged on the 'professional' bit to get 'netKar Pro: Professional Online Racing Simulator', they seem to have backfired on most counts. Namely the 'Professional' & 'Online' parts.

I certainly gave nKpro a good shot when it came out, but as yet I have not bought it. I think I will still support it eventually, but no doubt it will not have the same long lasting appeal as LFS does atm. If this latest patch sorts things out enough then maybe ill try it sooner

well, sounds similar to my problem. doing what SamH said should clarify.

but my problem is a crap network, i.e. lots of packet loss. however, there are many problems that can cause the same result, so keep testing. hopefully it will be something fixable, unlike a crap network

Oh cool

I missed it last year, but I would like to make an effort this year

Maybe I can organise a dSRC contingent Failing that, I would be interested to hear from fellow Scots who are planning on going so that we can pool our resources! i.e. Road trip!

better yet, just rename them or hide them in another folder. that way if you delete the wrong ones you can easily put them back.

I would just keep at it online. As long as you find the right places to race with people who are close to your speed you will improve and have fun. Try and avoid the servers that are too messy

You can join leagues, you just need to find the right one for yourself. Have look in the leagues section :P There should be a few open events you can hop into.

Career path.....hmmm........just race and practice, rinse and repeat For me, practicing offline on my own is no fun, so in order to progress just keep racing online and that way you can gauge your progress too. Hot-lapping helps some people, but it isnt my cup of tea.

Quote from tristancliffe :Yeah, I'd recommend a server run by one of the well known teams - [noobs], dSRC, T7R etc. Usually attracts a better class of person, and the bad drivers are usually afraid of nice people.

yes, we are sooo upper class

unlike the rest of you peasants! :bullwhip:

Alot of people seem to be having this same problem. From my experience it is a crap connection.
use the freeware version of this software:
http://www.pingplotter.com/download.html

and try pinging google.com. let it run for a while and take note of the Packet Loss % under the PL% heading.

If you have packet loss of more than a few percent, then your line sucks, like mine does now

I get packet loss of at least 10% on several junctions usually. This can rise to as much as 80%

It sucks big-time seeing as my line used to be perfectly ok.

well, not being able to easily refresh the server list is a symptom of my problem. but it usually comes through after a few tries.

good to see the good old dial-up works pretty well then

i am pretty certain it is a crap line anyway. nothing to do with LFS, other than the fact it uses UDP packets, which i think are affected badly by a didgy line. either that or they have no way of compensating for packet loss.

something like that...........

anyway, i sent a email to my ISP to see what the story is.

from experience, my brother has a slow hard drive and everytime the track is changed on an online game, his HD takes so long to load the new track that he lags out.

not quite the same problem as a full blown crash or hang, but still, a slow HD might be it.

well, just in case anyone else has the problem, would you care to elaborate on how you fixed your problem?

what i would like is to be able to turn off real mirrors, and just use the virtual as i find in cockpit view can even cut off your rear-view mirror.

atm there is only no mirrors, real mirrors, real + virtual mirrors. i would like no real mirrors and only the virtual.
