But would you say "Nürburgring Kurzanbindung" if you want to tell an english speaking person that they are using the short track config of the Nürburgring?
Small suggestion: What about testing DirectSound / trying to fix the windows issue first? I think that's the main problem now as it seems to multiply all the other issues. In U20 I didn't encounter any sound problems, except the crackling in rare situations. So in my opinion a sound like in U20 (with 0.1s lag) would be fine, it doesn't need to be that perfect for now.
Looks like LFS can simulate Interference. The AI cars produce almost identical sound waves which overlap each other and interfere. So you will get an envelope-wave which is hearable in the "growing and falling" volume.
Nearly every string in the game is translateable. You should ask Scawen to grant you access to the online translation tool, so you can fix the missing strings.
It's a full game, so the can charge the full prize for it.
P.s. And my guess is that it will sell quite well with all that media support. Expect free rides to WTCC races for magazine writers and stuff like that.
Yes, same problem here on both Vista and XP. I forgot to mention it in my first post.
When driving close to another car, the other car's engine sound changes from left to right. It's like when two sound waves elimate each other (e.g. two tuning forks with nearly the same frequency).
Edit: I've just done some tests and this is definatively a new bug which came with the new sound system in U21. With the old sounds (U20) the problem doesn't exist.
First test on WinXP:
1.
U20: Everything is fine, I can use the lowest delay value (0.1s).
U21: Delay, no skipping.
U22: Delay with the default block setting (2), no skipping, crackling.
2. There is no delay with a block setting of 1, so the problem is solved. But now there is this crackling bug which seems to be related to the echo. You can adjust the volume of the crackling by changing the echo volume slider. It gets louder when driving close to a wall.
3. Win XP
4. MacBook Pro, Logitech USB Headset, SigmaTel Audio drivers (laptop speakers)
Small note: LFS freezes from time to time when trying to change the block settings in-game.
Second test on Vista:
1.
U20: A sound delay of 0.27s is needed to hear any sound, but then it's fine (except the 0,27 delay), no crackling
U21: Sound skippings (maybe delay as well, I'm not sure)
U22: Sound skippings with the default block setting (2)
2. With a block setting of 3 the skipping problem is solved. But there seems to be some delay now, no crackling.
3. Vista
4. Athlon XP 2400+, Logitech USB Headset
Try to go in shift+u mode and set it to the same height as the heli cam - the sound will be a lot louder.
Short note: The GTI's engine is barely hearable when idle. Nothing new as it was like this in all the previous versions, but I still think it's a bit odd.
Ok, I've tested and compared U21 to U20 (WinXP on a MacBook Pro with a Logitech USB headset) and it seems that there are some problems with the new sound system:
No sound in heli cam
With U21 you don't hear any engine sound in the heli cam.
More sound lag
With U20 I can set the sound lag to the lowest possible value (0.10s) and it sounds very smooth. With U21 I get the impression that the sound is delayed for a higher value. It's difficult to say how much, because it's all down to hearing it, but with the direct side by side comparison I'd say that the lag is around 0.20 s now, a lot higher than before.
More stuttering
When driving in a full field with a lot of cars around there are more sound stutters in U21.
Lower sound quality
When reving the engine of e.g. the BF1 in single player mode I get the impression, that some parts of the engine sounds are missing. It's difficult to describe, but I think some sound parts are kicking in after some time delay, in contrast to U20 where you can hear the whole engine sound right from the beginning.
Edit: The horns do work fine here. No difference to U20. Have you tried Shift + H?
Switch "empty" to "no" after you've loaded the server list (in s2 mode) and all S1 servers, even those with players on it, will disappear. When you try to switch it back to "yes" and load the server list again, the empty s1 servers are gone as well.
I don't know, but somehow this "professional" sim-racing community à la autosimsport or rsc gets more and more suspect to me.
Free trips sponsored by SimBin (or blimey or whoever), free prizes and an unbiased GTR 2 test in the autosimsport mag? Yeah, sure... illepall
Edit: Wow, a physics mod for GTR2. So finally no faked grip values?
Edit 2: Now that I've read the ISI vc LFS article: I think they are right about the fact that LFS' damper settings needing some improvements. At the moment it just simulates simple dampers, but not such sophisticated ones like used in GTR and Formula racing. Maybe Scawen can find some time to work on it for a compatible patch.
The conclusion of the article is a bit weird: Choose the rFactor BMW because it has more grip and some lines later they want to tell us that both sims have too much grip??
Why should the independence of LFS go away? Even if Vic doesn't work fulltime for LFS anymore, the project is still independent. Or are there more things we don't know yet - I hope not!
Thanks for all the stuff you made for LFS and the great support you gave to all of us! I think without you and the great web programming you did for the lfs websites, the game wouldn't be as popular as it is now. I hope that you will still be around for LFS when it becomes necessary to update lfsword for new cars and tracks in the future.
Are you going back making music? I really like the stuff you made some years ago, especially intermission, that's my favorite. I've converted them to MP3 to be able to hear your music on my IPod and in my car. I bought the audiophonik CD you have worked on about 7 years ago.
It would be nice to hear something new from you, I think you definately have the necessary talent!
Good luck for the future, may the (LFS) force be with you!
