Quote from kompa :how?

Judging by your nick this might be a trick question, but here goes:

Externally it won't affect that much, since people who don't know about LFS can't really expect anything. Media interest in LFS could probably be increased by rumours.

Internally, meaning the existing community built around the sim, LFS suffers a lot. Like with the rally pack and the interiors and the whatevers that have been taken for granted but have been either completely made up or just built around vague dev statements concerning the schedule or the whole existence of the things.. People, the users, go nuts whenever they hear something new, and when they hear the new thing isn't what they were expecting (what they heard or read was supposed to be the next thing planned) they come here shouting and wondering what the hell is going on. Behaviour can be seen in all the arguments over the improvement suggestions forum, where teams of like-minded people will eventually repeat their daydreams and wishes so long that something turns into a fact of sorts. This creates confusion in everyone, and confusion feeds more threads and posts which lead to even more confusion.

The hype and misinformation starts to hurt LFS as a program when the confused people start demanding some action from the devs, actions that the devs haven't planned on doing either ever or not in the near future, next patch etc.. The damage (if only minor) is done when any of the devs need to post to forum explaining things, even when their minds get distracted from whatever the way they were developing LFS at the moment.

Maybe I'm just paranoid, maybe I just see these things (like some see dead people), but the forum is filling with unnecessary threads and posts that don't really get this sim anywhere.

EDIT: sinbad, I agree with you 100%

Quote from Sponge :And i pray it's not a diesel.. diesel race cars sound like crap.

This isn't just for you, but since you also failed..

I'm guessing since people are able to write, they can also read. It must be the understanding part where the difficulty is.

Quote from Scawen :It's a 200 bhp front wheel drive road car.

It has been mentioned even in this very thread that the only 200 bhp version is the 2.0 TSI, which is a 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine!

...

Most of the pre-patch hype around LFS is because people who don't read, just type. Or do read but don't understand. Waiting for a new patch would be MUCH easier for everyone, there'd be less confusions and less disappointments. You're all creating the hype that'll also wear you down months before any patch release, and then you'll start expecting more and more. I guess forum has reached some sort of critical mass where these things eventually happen but I hate to see it, not because I'd feel sorry for the general public but because I feel sorry for the devs because the hype and misinformation hurts LFS the most.

Anyways, since it has been said the GC version will be a quick job, my guess is that the public Scirocco version will be months and months away. Meanwhile, follow the forum to see how the hype destroys the most eager ones

Quote from RS1T :My main point is this HUGE negative attitude has got to stop.

No.

The best way out of your problem would be to start raising your average speed on the cruise servers, and as you learn how to handle your car then you could move up to autocross servers. After a while, I bet you would be in shape to go racing!

Quote from Eldanor :It's new content, and it's a real production car, it doesn't have to be my all time favourite car to enjoy it and appreciate it. But it's easier to complain about everything.

Imagine what people will say if there's ever going to be a real track in LFS.. "Why the hell didn't you make Nordschleife even when it was clearly what we all wanted?!" "No you ****head, the first real track was supposed to be Bathurst!" "Nope, VIR. I'm disappointed." "Why the devs are so blind!! Tsukuba or Ebisu was what we needed"..

People should be happy because it's not a single seater this time!

Quote from ssm :What is wrong with the Clio v6? it's exciting, I was even hoping to import it as my daily driver (Imagine the faces on my classmates :tilt... It's... intruiging.

Nothing wrong with it, actually it could be a much better choice for a new car than what the Scirocco is. But it just happens so that the Clio V6 is no longer in production, and in addition it's not a Clio V6 they're giving away as a prize in that competition but a Scirocco.

It's about whatever opportunities come across LFS's path, not about what people want or what they would prefer..

Getting 3rd party content into LFS would only work (= LFS stays being the best sim for pick-up racing and keeping its easy accessibility) if the new stuff is included into LFS download, that people don't have to download separate packages from forums / different websites. This means that the devs would have to spend time on integrating the new content into LFS, which would take time.

If the devs would like to get paid for their efforts, then the added content should be charged for. Depending on the amount of added content, the cost could be spread into 2 or 3 different packages like rallycross license, gtp license, stock car license or whatever.. So that people wouldn't have to pay for each and every car & track separately but in simple, genre oriented bits so they can get what they want and live in the know that there's not gonna be version mismatch or missing content in the racing genre the user likes.

But.

If the devs charge for the added content, then all the stuff would have to be fantasy. There are tons of mods for rFactor (some of them are very good), because most of the content is from real world, either converted from a commercial product or scratch made. There's no design to be done. There's always blueprints or photos or something to go by. Fantasy content, like most of LFS currently is, would be much harder to produce in numbers.

I don't know if it's "ok" to just copy whatever is in real world and just call it something else, some games of the past did this but are there any legal issues, I just don't know (Hoellsen, where are you BTW?!). We know there's a MacGyver F1 up for grabs if this is OK Paying whatever licensing fees should need to be done before any LFS user licenses for the content could be sold. This would mean either an existing capital to be spent to several licenses or an investor to back up the sim. I don't know if this is possible at all.

Pricing the content could be hard as well, should it be a set figure of say £12 to get one of the genre packages. That would mean let's say 6-9 cars and 2-3 tracks. How many people need to be working on a package to produce that content in x time? How long will it take if x number of people work on the content as a hobby, of their spare time?

Food for thought, :twocents: etc..

I'm not sure if it's modding that could rejuvenate LFS, but something needs to be done. At the moment this sim is almost dead to me, and to many others.

Luckily iRacing doesn't allow pick-up racing as such and is quite expensive, otherwise LFS would be :expressio

The LX8 was hard to drive because its engine was too powerful. If it had to be a V8, then something along the lines of the RST V8 or any other lower cc, high revving engine would've been nice.

Of course the current, better physics could change the situation a bit but the LX8 was too much over the top back then and I guess it wouldn't be much easier today either. Imagine a F08 without downforce - no good for racing, no good for drifting.

You know LX8 was never in a public version and therefore you wouldn't be getting it back. The people who have posted videos of the car are using a version they shouldn't be using at all..

Quote from Furiously-Fast :but to be honest, that is quite sad. Wasting a life like that.

Well..

If the ex wife really had made that guy's life so miserable that he went and killed himself, then the 'value' of that specific life isn't much and because of that ending the life in question wouldn't be a wasted life as such.

It's all about perspective really. Surely, there could've been a brighter future for the guy, he might have even had the chance to buy a proper car. And maybe the ex wife would've been ran over by a combine harvester. Who knows.

Quite a nice way to get out of the situation to be honest

Quote from nmanley :We are just racing on computers and it's more fun to be able to complete league races EVEN if we make a mistake or are on the butt end of others mistakes.

It's not proper racing when you don't have to worry about retiring. Part of the excitement is to be able to negotiate different situations on track. Some guys see the accidents coming and take evasive actions. Some end up off the track wondering what the heck just happened

There's no real need for 100% torque split either way. 5% front torque split is good enough for drifting.
Just wondering too

Whenever I feel like messing about in a sim, it usually is rFactor that I start. Nothing new in LFS, no significant changes. Doesn't keep me interested.

Quote from Dajmin :So what is the point?

It's there to protect your license. If someone in your family has access to the computer and has seen you driving LFS online, that someone could have a go when you're not looking and get the username banned.. Although a more sensible way is to just remove the game password from the license menu.

It can also be for demonstration purposes, show the game to your friend, unlock the game on his PC and then when you're done demonstrating LFS, lock it.

3.0L V6
240bhp@ 6900rpm
210Nm @ 4700-6900rpm
6-speed manual and RWD
Weight: 790kg

210Nm @ 6900rpm = ~152kW = ~204hp

NO unless it comes with the rest of the Nordschleife..

On any other track, the whole width of the track should be banked. But then you would've asked "do we need a banked corner", right?

31.7.-3.8. Rally Finland.

I know it's the poll result but if you're gonna try and lure in more people, pick another weekend. On the other hand, the southern leg (around Jämsä) is driven on saturday - there would be the motorsport part sorted..

I'm not coming to the meeting anyway, just a thought.

If there would be a real life track put into LFS, of course it would need to be laser scanned or in some other way accurately measured and modeled. There's no need for a track that only looks like a real life one from bird's eye view.

But having a real life track in LFS is highly unlikely and therefore there's no need for any laser scanning or anything. The only exception is that if Eric doesn't realise his tracks are too smooth, showing him the measured data of a real track could result in bumpier fantasy tracks.. (= what Ian said)

Pointless poll to be honest.

Quote from spilo101 :I dont think the size of the map itself should be the problem, you know how they have it in games with big maps, the sections load as player approaches them... I wish there was a development kit for maps, I'd definitely contribute.

That would be interesting, load a new section of track every now and then, perfect to distract you from the race itself. I really don't know if the loading would work in multiplayer.

There is no developers kit for maps, and hopefully never will be. LFS doesn't need people "contributing".

Quote from David 09 :In games(sets), the management of the differential is really invalid(useless). I would like to know if he(it) think of redoing her(it) because for me it is more important than to have new cars or new circuit. Especially that differential have a very important role on the behavior of the vehicle. Be that developer read our messages?

The physics simulation of LFS is developed continuously, but the pace of development is very slow. So you could assume that this kind of (clearly) unrealistic feature would be fixed at some point. Nobody knows when that is though. And the developers do read our messages from time to time, and make notes of valid suggestions - and maybe implement them when the time is right.

It's a very good suggestion, and has been suggested before. However, I think a better solution is to update the physics so the locked diff would be as useless as it is in real life.

Quote from Christopher Raemisch :Sorry, this community will take Tristans and Ajp's comments over yours anyday. If there is so much supporting evidence for these theories, post up some links please to back you 'facts'.

You must have some facts to back this claim up.. Was there a poll of some sort, or where does this information come from?

People shouldn't just take someones opinions and comments as the absolute truth. The reader should have enough understanding of the matter and enough time to digest the things he reads, hears etc. Enough understanding of the matter to call BS when it's needed. Enough understanding to see someone might have a valid point.

I'm not saying if in my opinion anyone's right or wrong - engineering is a wide field but what's in common is the laws of physics - mechanical systems like cars aren't that complex, similar subsystems can be found from quite a variety of machinery.

Quote from krugmander :iam a cop on tc servers and if iam in a chase i hit a barrier i go flying.

Now that's where you go wrong. When you're chasing, you should be actually chasing the bad guy and not be hitting the walls. Even if the walls wouldn't rocket your car into space, hitting a wall would slow you down. You don't want that when you're in a chase!

Quote from Nilex :Why separate?
In order to greatly improve cars maneuverability.

This might sound daft, but wouldn't a wheel+pedals set do the same and much, much more?

I can understand if a person doesn't have the money to buy a wheel just the very moment, and has to do with a keyboard or a mouse. But in the end, this is a simulation and as such, should be controlled with the same kind of methods as the simulated thing, a car.
