You're stretching it and taking it into absurdity and you (hopefully) know that.
LFS is a piece of software, doing whatever is possible to simulate racing by software.
Why is removing/changing some unrealistic feature always objected to by pointing out some other (allegedly) unrealistic feature in an often absurdistic way? Who knows what else will be removed/changed in the future?
I support the idea, but I fear that especially in public races many people would be too impatient (all they ever do is 5 lap races) I can even see T1 carnage happening during warm-up laps.
Fair point. But what the TS and others are basically asking for is changes to be made to LFS. To have influence on how this sim develops requires a certain amount of involvement in the community. Certainly when you're a server admin. If one choses not to, that's fine. But complaining afterwards is a no-go then.
1. Yes
2. Yes, but definitely get a wheel as it will add so much more to the experience
3. Yes, but much much less than on the demo servers. Plus, in S2 there are ways to take measures against crashers, which aren't possible on demo servers.
Why is that not fair? If you flip you made a mistake, so it's your own fault. Doesn't matter if your winning or not. Being able to recover from a flip and still being able to win or finish high, that's unfair because you wouldn't be able to do that in a real race.
Remember, LFS tries to be as realistic as possible. This change is another step in that direction.
And like already said, these changes were already announced so it's no use protesting anymore after they have been implemented.
This game is developed with certain goals in mind. And pleasing as many people as possible isn't one of them.
It's not a matter of being a minority or not. Cruising is simply not the goal of LFS, no matter if there are two or twenty cruising servers.
The first one. In reality your car would be taken out of the gravel pit and returned to the team's pit box. Where it could be repaired or where you could take a spare car out. Sure, the most realistic would be having to spend hours repairing your car but this would force people to stop playing which ofcourse can never be the aim.
That's where the discussion ends imo. Catering to subcultures like cruising is silly. Cruising was never the aim of LFS in the first place. Just because some people choose to use LFS in such a way does not mean LFS development should somehow change course and keep the cruising into account.
Have you ever been in a discussion with diehard GT fans? They can't be convinced there's anything better than GT. To them it is the most realistic racing game ever and they will keep thinking that until the end of time.
All I'm trying to say is that most people don't care about realism in a racing game. They just don't.
They want to have some fun virtually racing a car and that's it. And that's fine really, I don't expect everybody to have the same preference as me.
But people need to get it out of their head that LFS is ever going to compete with games like GT because they're simply in a different segment of the market, and that getting as much people in LFS as possible isn't necessarily a good thing.
If you don't get my point then we just have a different perspective on it. Which is fine
Yes, it's a great game, I play it at a mate's once in a while. And it can be great fun playing it together with a beer and some chips. But it's no real simulator, despite of what the packaging says.
You know, sometime you just want to have some fast food. It can be tasty sometimes. But most of the time you just want a nice well prepared juicy steak. At least I do. You can guess which type of food LFS would be
So I'm not saying GT4 is a terrible game, it's not. But it's not worthy of the label simulator.
One thing that would be nice though is if the devs could sell LFS on CD through the LFS Shop or something. This could be nice for people with traffic limitation or people who just want to have a physical object. With a booklet, manual and additions like the music addon pack, skin viewer, maybe some high res skinpack or stuff like that. Oh and with a fold out poster with the devs on it to hang over our beds It would cost a bit more then ofcourse.
When S2 is finished, LFS will not be finished yet. Before LFS is completely finished I don't see many marketing activities taking place, rightfully so.
What a lot of people don't seem to realise is that games like GT4 are not games LFS needs to compete against. LFS will never be a game for the masses, as Joe Sixpack just wants simple racing games with a lot of silly features.
LFS is doing fine as it is, and although ofcourse every new player is welcome, I feel we need people on board who have a passion for racing simulation. People who think GT is a simulator don't belong in that category.
I don't think LFS will ever be released on CD in shops. Online distribution is the future anyway imo. After all, LFS is very online oriented.
Getting more players to LFS should not be a goal in itself, it should be a result of an ever improving game. For sure people who are into sim racing know LFS or come across LFS one way or the other.
That's because the AI hasn't been completed yet. Regarding the qualifying this is no change from previous patches and not a bug. I believe Scawen will work on the AI for the next patch.
Practice was possible in previous patches because practice would start from the grid. Practice now starts from the pit. Anyway, just use race if you want to drive with AI, it makes no difference really.
Nothing can be done about that. LFS is a sim in development so these things are unavoidable. It has happened before and will happen again. Best thing to do is keep a seperate version of LFS running patch W if you want to be able to watch them again.
Just realised this is not the patch X thread
The posts I was responding to (and thus my replies) don't really belong in this topic.
Well, if you got a drive-through penalty for instance you should go in the pits and complete the penalty and the message will be gone. If you finish the race without completing the penalty you will be disqualified.
Seems the same to me also. Maybe the graphics settings in those shots on lfs.net are set higher?
I guess these shots were made by Don. If there's any difference he could be using some custom textures. For example he's also using a custom tire sidewall texture, which can be found on this forum.
Game developers and game users working this closely together to continuously improve the game, an extremely rare phenomenon in games development. This is one of the thing that makes LFS so special So great thanks to the devs and the community are in order. Have a cookie all
Just a quick question Scawen. I know patch X is just out of the door, but I was wondering if you're considering to release test patches for Y in the same way? Considering Y will (I assume) be physics imcompatible? Because I have the impression that with the recent test patches you have been able to work very effectively because of the immediate feedback.
The old records will not be reset as this patch is multiplay incompatible and not physics incompatible. A reset will be done when Patch Y is released (I guess).
Yes, it would be nice to have some sort of skipping through replays. But it's been suggested before, so I think Scawen will try to implement something for this eventually. The replays are bascially a recreation of the actual race by using the drivers' input data so you can't really make it rewind or something like that. But some sort of "keyframe" like possibility could be done I guess. Or at least skipping by lap number for example.
