After our
halfway report we now continue with the championship deciding races in OWRL Div A and Div B. Turned out to be a battle among the veterans in Div A, and that the Div B championship was decided even after the contestants crossed the line:
Season 11 – The Second Half
With the season expanding to 6 events, the fourth race meeting of the season was not the climax, but the start of the second half. Both divisions remained as close, tense and exciting in the final three races with the championship fight going to the final laps, or even beyond the chequered flag!
Division A
Race 4 – South City Long Reverse
The dominance of the “Big Three” was smashed with two new faces on the podium. Virtual.Roedii completely dominated the meeting taking pole position by a large margin and then leading every lap to take the win by over 20 seconds. 2nd, 3rd and 4th were covered by a total of 0.7s at the end in what looked like an absorbing contest with FPR Matze78 finishing 2nd ahead of ^P^Storm_Cloud. IRT Andy (GER) kept his championship challenge going with 4th whilst spdoFiredup dropped out of the top 3 for the first time. The spdo team must have liked what they saw here as they moved in and signed up Roedii after the race.
Race 5 – Westhill
The top 11 drivers were separated by only 1 second in qualification and the race was a bit closer than South City too. ^P^Storm_Cloud held the lead from pole for 29 laps but during the crucial laps around the pitstops FPR Matze78 was faster and he took his first OWRL Division A win by 3 seconds from ^P^Storm_Cloud with IRT Andy (GER) in 3rd. This dropped Andy 8 points behind in the fight for the championship and after spdoFiredup’s disappointing race at Westhill he needed the Pole-Win double and both Storm and Andy retiring to take the championship. The “Big Three” had definitely become the “Big Five” over the last two races and incredibly from 5 races there had been 5 different winners.
Race 6 – Aston GT
A classic showdown. Two champions fighting once again for the title at the final race, but before qualifying there was a minute silence for ELR Button. Frank had finally succumbed to a long illness and as a long time OWRL driver and friend to many it was a fitting show of respect from his friends and rivals. He will be truly missed.
After qualifying, IRT Andy (GER) had trimmed ^P^Storm_Cloud’s lead to 7 points. A win, with Storm in 3rd place would do the job.
An accident at turn 1 caused by ^P^Storm_Cloud removed the front row spdo drivers from the front of the race and FPR Matze78 had a spin early on. This left the two old rivals fighting at the front. Although Storm only needed to finish 2nd he tracked down Andy and overtook him going down the hill into the stadium section. Andy defended hard on the inside, but could do nothing to stop the pass. Being the true sportsman he is, there were no “Michael Schumacher” moves from Andy and both drivers made the tricky left-right at the bottom of the hill. Storm finished the race in the lead and became the first driver since IRT Andy (GER) himself to retain the Division A championship. SpdoFiredup bounced back from his setback at turn 1 to drive a magnificent race and finish 3rd, which confirmed his 3rd place in the championship.
Matze finished he season in 4th place ahead of the ever consistent mb Andre Louis who finished in 4th, 7th, 5th and 5th in his last 4 races after a slow start to just beat spdoRoedii into 6th place.
A very close season indeed. Over the second half of the season Storm beat Andy by a total of 13.44 seconds in 127 laps of racing. That is an average of 0.1s per lap! It certainly seems that experience is the key to winning OWRL Division A. The problem for Andy and Storm is that Roedii, Matze and Firedup have now got that experience too and will take the fight to the veterans in Season 12.
Division B
Could DSR Sizzle retain his lead and win the championship? Could IRT Relax actually win the title without getting on the podium? Would another challenger emerge from the pack? Read on...
Race 4 – South City Chicane
SpdoVincper took an easy win in the sprint race as spdoMarcG, DSR Sizzle and IRT Der Dude battled for the podium. In the main race, IRT Relax led away from pole after taking 8th in the sprint, but a couple of incidents in front of DSR Sizzle moved him to 4th on the first lap. However some big battles with the spdo boys and IRT Der Dude meant it looked like IRT Relax would score some big points over his rival as DSR Sizzle fell to 9th place. It was not to be for the German ex-champion as he picked up damage and fell to 7th at the end with Sizzle finishing just ahead in 6th. spdoMarcG took the win but it wasn’t all good news for the team as spdoVincper was disqualified for not taking a Stop-Go penalty within 3 laps.
Race 5 – Westhill
SpdoVincper made up for his South City main race DQ with a win in the sprint race at Westhill just ahead of IRT Der Dude and Core Forbin. Of the contenders, IRT Relax scored the best result with 4th as DSR Sizzle struggled to finish 19th after tangling with spdoMarcG and then crashing at the quick chicane.
In the main race, spdo Vincper made it a double win again finishing ahead of IRT Der Dude. The title chasers both finished well down with IRT Relax in 10th and DSR Sizzle in 17th having made 2 more trips to the pitlane.
Race 6 – Aston Club
So the fight came all the way to end and the race at that quintessential FOX track, Aston Club. The FBMs showed the action is no less frantic with 2 great races. DSR Sizzle started at the back but drove brilliantly to finish 8th in the sprint race, whilst IRT Relax finally made the podium behind IvRT Codename and spdoMarcG, who took the win.
Going into the main race IRT Relax had a lead of just 5 points and with DSR Sizzle on the pole it looked like it would be tough for the former Division A and Division B champion to hang onto that slender lead. DSR Sizzle led the early laps from spdo Vincper and IvRT Timurr with IRT Relax in 4th. This was enough for DSR Sizzle, but then the spdo boys, Vincper and MarcG got ahead and then it was IRT Relax, still in 4th place who would take then title by 1 point! With only 5 laps to go the championship was on a knife edge – one wrong move and it would be the end.
On the last lap a backmarker crashes as IRT Relax passes him, slowing the German and IvRT Codename, who has been closing him down passes for 4th! DSR Sizzle can win the title! Relax crashes at the last corner but retains 4th place as he crosses the line, crestfallen. The championship is gone by 3 points.
But wait! DSR Sizzle makes 2 chat messages, loses 10 seconds in penalties and 2 places! IRT Relax is champion! Unbelievable! It seems very harsh on DSR Sizzle to lose like that, but OWRL has to apply the rules to everyone equally. In truth, either driver would have been a worthy winner, but it was IRT Relax who took the trophy home.
Glory is short lived in OWRL however, and in less than 2 weeks the next season starts at Blackwood and the fight will start again!
